July 30, 1627, Italy, region of Garganica in (Apulia), especially San Severeo, Serra Capriola, San Nicandra, intensity III which corresponds to an earthquake which destroyed towns and devastated districts. (reference #1055)
July 30, 1627, 10:50 UTC, intensity X, magnitude 6.7. Disastrous earthquake in Gargano. Epicenter located in land near Lesina and S.Severo (Foggia). At S.Severo all the buildings and the towers ruined. 800 victims. Damage in the neighbouring villages (Torre Maggiore, San Paolo, Serracapriola etc.) where about 4,300 people died. Felt in a very broad area, and also in Chieti, Naples and Ragusa. Along the coast between S.Nicandro and the Fortore river mouth, near the Lesina lake, the sea withdrew 2-3 miles and then flooded the coast and possibly the village of Lesina. Low land between Silvi and Mutignano were inundated. (reference #4139)
