August 30, 1125 Earthquake: Gansu Province, China

August 30, 1125, in and around Lanzhou, Gansu Province, 36.1 N, 103.7 E, magnitude 7, intensity IX.

Earth quaked in Xihe Lu, with Lanzhou most affected.

City walls of 6 cities in Lanzhou were destroyed, all

storehouses were devastated and several hundred

families ruined. All plants on the hill were buried

in the ground and wheat at the hillside was upthrust

onto the hilltop (probably due to a large landslip).

Ground cracked for dozens of meters long. The shock struck all the prefectures to the east of the Yellow River (from Lanzhou to Jingyuan) and ground cracked.

Note: At that time Xihe Lu consisted of nine prefectures

including Lanzhou whose seat was located at the present day Lanzhou City and had jurisdiction over eight towns, passes and cities, namely Aganbu (the present-day Agan Zhen),

Kanguzhai (Xiaokangying of the present-day Yuzhong County), Dongguanbu (near the present-day Sangyuanzi), Jinchengguan (Jinchengguan of Lanzhou) Jingyuguan (west of Gucheng),

Dingxicheng (Chankou of the present-day Dingxi County), Dingyuancheng (the present-day Dingguan Town of Yuzhong County), Tongchuanbu (near the present-day Hekou of Lanzhou). The so-called 6 cities were probably those not counting Dingxicheng and Kanguzhai.
