.KEY MESSAGES...

- Much cooler today, with areas of low clouds on the plains this
  morning. Hazy conditions expected today.

- Scattered Showers and thunderstorms along the mtns/plains interface
  this afternoon. We could see thunderstorms over the Aspen
  burn scar.

- Warming up starting WED (but WED will still be pretty nice);
  temps in the 100s by Friday lasting until at least the end of
  this fcst period.

- Some monsoon moisture in the mtns possible next week.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 1201 AM MDT Tue Aug 4 2026

A cool front was pushing across the plains very early this morning.
This front will bring much cooler air (and areas of morning stratus
clouds over the plains) to the lower elevations today. It will also
bring some gusty winds to parts of the plains very early this
morning. Later on today, Max temps over the plains will be in the
upper 70s across N El Paso county and L/M 80s over the rest of the
plains. Unfortunately, this cool air is relatively shallow an the
San Luis Valley will likely remain around 90 for tomorrow afternoon.
We will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms along the
mtns/plains interface by later this afternoon, and we could see some
locally heavy rain, and this could cause some issued for the Aspen
Acres (AA) burn scar. The rain is not expected to be excessively
heavy, but any locally heavy rain the wrong area could cause issues.
We may also see some stronger convection over the greater southern
Sangres/W Raton Mesa region tomorrow afternoon. Storms may linger
over the Raton Mesa area through the mid evening hours.

Along the CONTDVD, Elevated fire weather conditions will occur this
afternoon due to marginal gusty winds and RH values in the 15-20%
range

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Issued at 1201 AM MDT Tue Aug 4 2026

From Wednesday into the weekend, it looks very dry over the area as
the 500-700 mb charts are showing little if any moisture in this
layer through this period. If we see any precip, it will be along
the CO/NM border areas during this time period. Spotty critical fire
weather conditions will be possible along the Divide. These spotty
critical fire weather conditions may migrate to the plains by the
weekend.

Unfortunately, temps will be gradually warming up from Wednesday
onwards, and temps will be in the 100s once again by Friday over the
plains. 100s are forecast from Friday through the end of this fcst
period (TUE)

By Sunday into early next week, we may see some monsoon moisture
increase over the higher terrain. \/Hodanish.

VFR conditions are mostly expected at KALS, KCOS, and KPUB through
24 hours.

Breezy winds will develop at the terminals this afternoon, southwest
at KALS and southeast over KCOS and KPUB. Along with increased mid-
level clouds, showers and passing thunderstorms are expected late
this afternoon into the evening. While chances for precipitation at
the terminals are low, gusty outflow winds will likely move across
the area around this time, leading to variable, gusty winds 35-40
knots. Given the scattered coverage of convection today, left as
PROB30s for now. Winds weaken overnight across the terminals, with
some mid to low-level clouds lingering at KCOS and KPUB.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

One or two strong thunderstorms will be possible across the southern
Sangre De Cristo mountains and adjacent areas. Winds gusts to 50 to
60 mph will be possible along with hail ranging from nickels to
quarters.

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible across the southern
mountains today, including the Aspen Acres burn scar. If a strong
storm should develop over the burn scar, then flash flooding could
occur, especially over the central part of the burn scar.

Elevated fire weather conditions will be possible along the
Continental Divide today.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Elevated fire weather conditions will be possible along the
Continental Divide through the rest of this week. These elevated
fire weather conditions will then be possible across parts of the
plains this upcoming weekend.

Temperatures will once again become hot by Friday and last into the
weekend. Readings in the 100s will be likely across a good part of
the plains Friday through Monday.
