...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 430 PM EDT
FOR SOUTHEASTERN GORDON AND NORTHEASTERN BARTOW COUNTIES...

At 420 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Fairmount, or
10 miles east of Calhoun, moving northeast at 10 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to 
         roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include...
Calhoun, Adairsville, Fairmount, Ranger, Sonoraville, Pine Log,
Oakman, Folsom, and Funkhouser.

...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...

.KEY MESSAGES...

  -  A damaging wind gust threat exists for parts of North
     (does not include Atlanta) through this evening. The
     threat for widespread severe weather is low.

  -  Scattered thunderstorms will be possible each day this
     week posing a threat for gusty winds and locally heavy
     rainfall.

  - Impactful heat is becoming increasingly likely as heat
    indices return to the mid 90s to low 100s by the middle
    of the week.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)
Issued at 137 PM EDT Sun Aug 9 2026

Current radar loop shows showers and thunderstorms forming across
N and NW GA along an old frontal boundary extending from western
VA down to the LA/MS Gulf coast. Just seeing general thunderstorms
for now (nothing severe) but we could still see some strong to
severe storms especially across NE GA later this
afternoon/evening. With temps in the middle to upper 80s, Capes in
the 1200-2000 J/Kg range, and LIs around -3 to -5, we could
definitely see some strong to isolated severe storms this
afternoon. The main threats appear to be gusty winds, frequent
lightning strikes, Small hail, and periods of heavy rain. These
storms will start to diminish as the sun sets and we loose
daytime heating with the convection ending around Midnight (Give
or take and hour or two). With PWATs in the 1.8" to 2.15" range,
waterlogged downdrafts will also be possible like we've seen over
the past week or two.

The old boundary stays around Mon and should act as a catalyst
again for another round of diurnally driven showers and
thunderstorms. High temps Mon expected to be very similar to
today.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday morning through next Saturday)

No significant updates for the extended period. The main story will
be rising temperatures and the potential for impactful heat by mid-
to late this week. The set up responsible for these trends will be
an eastward migrating mid-level ridge, currently over the Desert
Southwest and high pressure at the surface. Any disturbances that
translate through the the mid/upper level flow may act to locally
enhance convective activity on any given day. Otherwise, expect
continued chances for daily afternoon/evening thunderstorms through
this next week. Temperatures are forecast to rise to the upper 80s
to low 90s across most locations outside of the higher elevations.
By Wednesday, temperatures will trend upward a degree or two each
day going forward. Increasing moisture will support the return of
dewpoints in the mid- 70s and PwS in excess of 1.5". Thus, heat
index values ('feels like' temperatures) are forecast to return to
the upper 90s to low 100s by mid to late week -- the highest values
currently over parts of eastern GA. Heat headlines may be necessary
in future forecasts. In the meantime, be mindful of the heat as you
plan for any outdoor work or activities this coming week.

VFR ceilings with light S to SE winds this afternoon/evening.
Expecting some diurnally driven popup convection so could see some
MVFR ceilings and gusty VRB winds in and around any storms. Winds
go light and variable overnight then turn to the SW with speeds
in the 3-8kt range Monday. Expecting another round of SCT
afternoon SHRA/TSRA Mon. Will see MVFR VSBYs in and around any
convection but otherwise no restrictions to VSBYs expected.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight...

Scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening
across mainly north Georgia. Primary threats will be strong,
gusty winds, small hail, and periods of heavy rainfall capable of
producing some isolated flash flooding. Isolated damaging wind
gusts cannot be ruled out.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected each afternoon
through the week. Locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be
primary storm threats.

County through 1245 PM EDT...

At 1208 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over Colwell, or 8 miles
southwest of Ducktown, moving east at 10 mph.

HAZARD...Up to 40 mph wind, frequent cloud to ground lightning and
         heavy rain.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
         light, unsecured objects. Heavy rain may cause temporary
         street flooding especially in poor drainage areas.

Locations impacted include...
