Winter Weather Advisory upgraded to a Lake Effect Snow Warning for
southern Erie and Wyoming counties through 1PM Friday.

Winter Storm Watch issued for the entire area Sunday through Monday
for the potential of widespread, heavy synoptic snow.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
1) Localized heavy lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario and Lake
Erie today through Friday, along with gusty winds and significant
blowing and drifting snow.

2) Dangerously cold airmass will arrive Friday and last into
Sunday morning.

3) Widespread potentially heavy snow becoming more likely Sunday
through Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGE 1...Localized heavy lake effect snow east of Lake
Ontario and Lake Erie today through Friday, along with gusty winds
and significant blowing and drifting snow.

The second cold front in a series of boundaries will enter Western
NY early this morning and become lake enhanced as temperatures aloft
begin to cool. This will produce another 2-4 hour period of moderate
to briefly heavy lake enhanced snow across much of Western NY,
including the Buffalo Metro area with a few more inches of
accumulation during the morning commute. The same will happen east
of Lake Ontario later this morning through early afternoon with a
lake enhanced cold frontal passage.

This afternoon through Friday, a more pure lake response will
develop with less in the way of synoptic scale forcing and snowfall.
Lake induced equilibrium levels will rise to near 10K feet over both
lakes tonight through Friday as cold air deepens.

Off Lake Erie...

The wildcard is the rapid advance of ice cover on Lake Erie over the
past few days. While there has been a rapid advance, new ice is thin
and/or slushy, especially over the deep water that lies offshore of
Western NY. There is likely still enough open or partially open
water to support a respectable lake response.

Expect a break in the snow following the cold frontal passage this
morning. A band of lake effect snow will then develop this afternoon
on WSW flow, reaching peak intensity late this afternoon through
tonight before weakening Friday morning. Boundary layer flow will
generally be WSW, with subtle variations over time forcing several
north/south oscillations. Expect the band to have the greatest
residence time across southern Erie and Wyoming counties, including
some of the Buffalo Southtowns.

Working under the assumption that there is still enough open water
to produce locally heavy snowfall, accumulations may reach or exceed
1 foot in the most persistent bands across Southern Erie and Wyoming
counties, with lesser accumulations across far northern/western
Chautauqua County and the northwest corner of Cattaraugus County.
Accumulating snow may also brush the southern portion of the
northern Erie County zone (including the more densely populated
southern and eastern suburbs of Buffalo) and southern Genesee
County.

Off Lake Ontario...

Some shear near the time of the second cold frontal passage may
hinder band organization initially today, with a more cellular look
or multiple bands possible. This will change by early evening with a
more dominant band developing east of the lake. The band will be
heavy much of the time from this evening through Friday with 3-4"
per hour snowfall rates likely. Subtle variations in wind direction
will force the band to oscillate north/south multiple times, with
the northernmost extent reaching near Watertown and the southern end
of the oscillations extending into far northern Oswego County.

Late Friday afternoon an arctic front will move south across the
lake and likely shove an east-west oriented band onshore along much
of the south shore of the lake with a burst of heavy snow.

Expect a local maximum of 2-3 feet across the central and northern
Tug Hill Plateau, with a somewhat larger footprint of 8-16"
surrounding that.

Wind gusts will reach 40+ mph at times today through Friday, with
the strongest winds this afternoon and again during the day Friday.
This will produce significant blowing and drifting snow in lake
effect areas.

Key Message 2...Dangerously cold airmass will arrive Friday and last
into Sunday morning.

Anomalously strong area of Arctic high pressure will ride southeast
along the eastern periphery of the Canadian Rockies Thursday with
850mb temps just east of the high center forecast to be as low as
-40C. Thankfully, this airmass will modify somewhat before plunging
across our area Friday into the first half of the weekend, however
it will still remain a dangerously cold airmass. An arctic cold
front will plow southward across our region very late Thursday night
into Friday morning. Expect highs to occur during the morning hours
Friday, with temps falling through the teens into the single digits
during the second half of the day. Expect the heart of the coldest
air (850 mb temps in the negative mid 20s C) to occur from late
Friday through late Saturday. Much of the area will plunge below
zero Friday night, with portions of the North Country possibly
dipping down to -20F. Winds will also remain quite gusty through
Friday night. The combination of the very cold airmass and brisk
winds will lead to dangerously cold wind chill values. Expect wind
chill values down to -15F to -20F across much of the area, with sub
-30F wind chills possible across portions of the North Country. An
Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect for the North Country, with
Cold Weather Advisories likely being needed for much, if not all of
the rest of the area at some point. See the Climate section below
for some interesting facts about just how extreme this cold shot is
expected to be.

Very cold airmass remains in place Saturday. This will only allow
temperatures to recover into the single digits, with the North
Country possibly not reaching zero. Winds will continue to come down
Saturday as the center of the Arctic high moves near or right over
the region. This will help at least bring some relief to the wind
chills by Saturday afternoon with apparent temps nearing zero across
much of the region, with -10F to -15F wind chills confined to the
Tug Hill and western Dacks.

Key Message 3...Widespread potentially heavy snow becoming more
likely late Saturday night through Monday.

Confidence continues to grow concerning the potential for a major
winter storm that may possibly bring significant widespread snowfall
to our area for the second half of the weekend into the start of the
new work week. There will be some modification of our airmass on
Sunday ahead of the approaching system, with another reinforcing
shot of very cold air by later Monday/Monday night on the back side
of the low as it tracks east of the area, however temps will still
remain well below average during the event. Models have become very
well aligned with the 22/00Z run showing a consensus of a more
northerly track of the system, placing our area at risk for the
possibility of significant snowfall. Thus, even though the event
start time is still a ways out, confidence has grown enough that a
Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the entire area from later
Saturday night through early Monday evening. Areas downwind of the
lakes will likely see even higher snow amounts owed to lake
enhancement. It's too difficult to pin down exact amounts at this
time.

A very cold airmass will remain in place in the wake of the system.
A westerly low level flow will bring additional lake snows to areas
east of the lakes through at least mid week. That said, Lake Erie is
currently well over 50% frozen, and with the upcoming dangerous cold
Friday/Saturday along with lowering winds, it is expected that Lake
Erie will likely become completely frozen over by sometime late this
week into this weekend, which will significantly limit lake effect
potential.

.AVIATION /10Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A secondary cold front will enter Western NY early this morning and
become lake enhanced, with a few hours of moderate to locally heavy
snow east and northeast of Lake Erie, including KBUF. A similar
period of lake enhancement will develop east of Lake Ontario later
this morning through early afternoon with local moderate to heavy
snow, including KART.

Snow will taper off from west to east behind the secondary cold
front. A more pure lake response will develop east of the lakes this
afternoon through tonight. Off Lake Erie, a band of locally heavy
lake effect snow will bring local LIFR, with the band likely staying
just south of KBUF and mainly north of KJHW most of the time. Off
Lake Ontario, a band of heavy snow will meander from near KART to
the Tug Hill Plateau this evening through the overnight, with local
VLIFR in very heavy snow.

It will be very windy today through tonight, with gusts in the 25 to
35 knot range, strongest today northeast of Lake Erie. This will
result in blowing and drifting snow on airfields where fresh snow is
on the ground.

Outlook...

Friday...Heavy lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario with local
VLIFR, especially south of KART. Lake effect snow with local LIFR
east of Lake Erie (south of KBUF) weakens. Gusty winds with blowing
snow.

Friday night...Local lake effect snow and IFR southeast of Lake
Ontario, including KROC.

Saturday...Local IFR in lake effect snow showers southeast of the
lakes in the morning, mainly VFR in the afternoon.

Sunday through Monday...Widespread LIFR with moderate to heavy snow.

WSW gales will continue on Lake Ontario today through Friday, with
sustained winds of 30 knots on Lake Erie. Winds will become
northwest Friday night following an arctic cold front, then rapidly
diminish late Friday night through Saturday as high pressure builds
into the lower Great Lakes.
