.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build into the region through tonight,
shifting offshore on Saturday. A strong low pressure system will
impact the region over the weekend, bringing widespread
precipitation. A strong cold front will pass offshore late
Sunday, with windy conditions developing through Monday as
arctic high pressure builds in from the west across the Great
Lakes. Below normal temperatures are expected next week. A
coastal system may impact the region late Wednesday into
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Strong high pressure continues to settle across the region this
afternoon. A sunny day in progress with below normal temperatures.
The gusty West to Northwest wind is bringing a cold wind chill
to the region. The high temperatures this afternoon will be in
the 30s (colder in the Poconos) and with the notable breeze wind
chills will be in the teens and 20s. Winds will diminish slowly
later this afternoon.

As the surface high continues to shift to our north and east
tonight, the zonal flow aloft should allow high to even some mid
level clouds to quickly increase from the west. These should
initially be thin enough to allow ideal radiational cooling for
a time this evening as the wind goes light and variable to calm.
The cloud cover should thicken up overnight as high to mid
level moisture increases. Low temperatures are forecast to be in
low to mid 20s, except teens in the Poconos into northwestern
New Jersey.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A strong low pressure system will impact the region over the
weekend, bringing accumulating wintry precip from around the
I-95 corridor and northwest Saturday afternoon into Saturday
night, and widespread moderate to locally heavy rainfall late
Saturday into Sunday.

A strongly amplified synoptic pattern is expected to take shape
across the CONUS this weekend. Troughing across the Southwest
will shift to the Plains and Deep South and then offshore of the
East Coast Sunday night, with phasing polar and sub tropical
jets as the system evolves. At the surface, a Colorado low will
track across the CONUS while strengthening considerably from
Saturday through Sunday, passing across the Ohio Valley Saturday
night then just north of our area late Sunday. The low is
anticipated to drop well below 990 mb as it lifts northeast into
New England late Sunday. A warm front will lift north into the
area early Sunday as the low approaches, then a strong cold
front will follow late Sunday.

As far as sensible weather and impacts go, the weekend looks
wintry then wet to put it simply. Strong isentropic ascent will
result in precipitation spreading into the region fairly quickly
Saturday afternoon and Saturday night well ahead of the main
surface low. Some flurries or sprinkles are possible in the
morning, but any precipitation will likely struggle to reach the
ground initially with the very dry airmass in place ahead of
this system. The precipitation is expected to be of the wintry
variety to start Saturday afternoon, mainly from along the I-95
corridor and northwest. In this area, thermals profile should
support all snow to start. Near the I-95 corridor, temperatures
will be in the mid to upper 30s. So accumulations will likely
struggle a bit until late afternoon or early evening, but by
then, the change to rain (perhaps sleet briefly) will be
occurring. So accumulations for the I-95 corridor should remain
light, generally around an inch or less, perhaps locally as much
as 2" just northwest of I-95.

Farther north, cooler temperatures and longer duration of
snowfall is expected to result in more snow accumulations and
impacts to roads into Saturday evening. A period of freezing
rain is also anticipated in some areas Saturday night where
precipitation changes to rain before temperatures rise above
freezing. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for the areas
most likely to experience slippery road conditions from the snow
and ice accumulations. Within much of the advisory area, a
general 2-4" of snow is forecast, along with ice amounts up to
0.1". Localized snow amounts near 5" are possible in areas above
1,200 feet north of I-78. Along the Pocono Plateau, ice amounts
exceeding 0.25" are forecast, however should remain below
0.50". Given the wet and sticky nature of the snow followed by
notable ice accretion, this region could experience some
localized power outages or tree damage and an upgrade to a
warning may need to be considered if confidence in warning level
impacts increases.

As the evening progresses, wintry precip will change to rain
from south to north into the I-78 corridor. After midnight, any
freezing rain should be confined to areas above 1,200 feet,
which will eventually change to all rain overnight as well. The
Pocono Plateau could hang around freezing through mid-morning
Sunday before the transition to all rain.

South of the wintry precip, it will be a rainy Saturday night.
There should be a break in the rain at some point by Sunday
morning, however periods of showery rains will continue for much
of the daytime Sunday. Not an "all day rain" per se, but there
will be many rounds of moderate to locally heavy rainfall at
times through Sunday afternoon. PWats look to rise into the
1.0-1.5" range, which is quite high for mid February. A
widespread 1-2" of rainfall is forecast, including the liquid
equivalent of any wintry precipitation. Given ongoing drought
conditions and lack of significant rains recently, flooding
still appears unlikely. However, given a snowmelt component and
soggy ground, some nuisance minor flooding is possible. We will
continue to monitor this threat.

Temperatures will be fairly seasonable on Saturday, then
turning quite mild into Sunday as the warm front lifts north.
Highs Sunday into the 50s south of I-78, even near 60 degrees
southeast of I-95. Winds will be relatively light through
Saturday night, then south to southwest winds will increase by
midday Sunday as the cold front approaches. High winds
developing in the wake of the cold front by Sunday evening. For
more on that, see the Long Term section below.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Following the weekend system, arctic high pressure will build
into the region into next week with below normal temperatures,
blustery, and dry conditions expected through midweek. A coastal
system appears increasingly likely to bring widespread
accumulating snowfall to our region sometime Wednesday night
and/or Thursday.

In the wake of the strong cold front Sunday night, temperatures
will plummet into the 20s with wind chills in the teens to
single digits. The main concern for Sunday night through Monday
will be the strong west to northwest winds developing. The
synoptic pattern is favorable for high winds. Surface pressure
rises exceeding 1 mb/hour and very strong cold advection will
support efficient boundary layer mixing overnight into Monday.
Within the boundary layer, wind speeds increasing to 35-45 kts
should translate to frequent gusts in the 40- 55 mph range for
much of this period Sunday night through Monday. Tree damage and
power outages will be possible.

For Monday through Wednesday, expect highs ranging from the mid
20s north to mid 30s south and lows mainly in the teens. Most
areas remaining below freezing Tuesday and Wednesday. Single
digit wind chills possible area wide during the nighttime
periods. Wind chills only topping out in the teens to 20s during
the daytime periods.

For Wednesday night through Thursday, confidence is increasing
that widespread snowfall could occur across the region. The
medium range guidance is supportive of a synoptic pattern
favorable for a coastal system. We are still about 6 days away
from this period, so there is still a lot of uncertainty and
time for snowfall potential to change.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...VFR. West to west-northwest winds 12-18 knots
with gusts to 25-30 knots, then quickly diminishing late in the
afternoon. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR with an increase in high, then mid level clouds.
West to northwest winds quickly diminishing to around 5 knots
early, then becoming light and variable or calm. High confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday through Sunday...MVFR and IFR conditions prevailing.

MIV/ACY), changing to all rain Saturday night. Periods of rain,
