.SYNOPSIS...
Gusty winds will continue through today across the mountains as high
pressure builds in from the west. The high will move overhead on
Friday. A weak cold front will move into the mountains Friday night
and early Saturday, followed by a larger low pressure system moving
across the Southeast during the second half of the weekend. High
pressure will move back in for early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Key Messages:

1) A Wind Advisory remains in effect across the mountains until 6 AM.

2) In the wake of the cold front, NW flow snow is expected along the
NC/TN border thru this morning.

As of 3:45 AM EST Thursday: Broad/deep upper trofing will translate
east of our area and off the Atlantic Coast today and tonight with
flat upper ridging building in its wake. At the sfc, broad high pre-
ssure will steadily spread into our area from the west. The larger-
scale pressure gradient will remain robust today and will eventually
weaken this evening allowing the gusty W to NW winds to weaken across
our area. Based on the latest near-term guidance, wind gusts have
trended a bit stronger over the NC mtns especially above 3500 ft,
thus we decided to issue a High Wind Warning for all of Avery County,
Caldwell and Burke mtns, and elevations above 3500 ft for portions of
the NC mtns, and extend the current Wind Advisory (for our mtn zones
below 3500 ft) thru 00z Friday. Gusts should be notably weaker by that
time. Outside the mtns, winds will remain gusty but they should remain
below Advisory criteria today. Other than lingering NW flow snow showers
along the NC/TN border region, we should be dry through the near-term
period. The lingering snow showers will continue to be handled with an
SPS, as needed, going forward, as accumulations are not expected to
reach Advisory amounts over the bulk of the impacted counties. Other-
wise, the snow showers will gradually taper off thru the morning, but
there could be a brief increase just after daybreak. Expect cold wind
chills in the single digits over the higher elevations thru the morning,
with highs today roughly 5 to 12 deg below normal with low RH expected
this aftn/evening.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 330 AM Thursday: Friday looks like a fair and quiet weather
day, for a change, as we begin the day with a quasi-zonal flow aloft
and a sfc high controlling our weather from FL. Expect plenty of
sun. The air mass will continue to modify, and temps should warm
up a few degrees above normal. Meanwhile, a sfc low moving east
across the central Plains will weaken and slowly lose moisture
as it moves into the Ohio Valley. Model guidance hasn't really
changed much with this one. The low is still depicted to weaken
as it moves through the confluence of the split flow upper pattern
to our north, pushing a weak cold front into the mtns Friday night
and Saturday morning. This one really doesn't have much going for
it, other than some upslope flow late Friday night. Precip probs
briefly ramp up to likely early Saturday morning before sunrise,
but in general, precip will be hard-pressed to make it over the
spine of the mtns. Temps are warm enough to keep it all liquid. For
Saturday, precip probs gradually dry up in the morning. A lull is
expected thru the afternoon in the wake of this first system and
the arrival of the next from the west, which won't be until after
sunset. A westerly flow will allow for a warmup 10-15 degrees above
normal in the afternoon. By that time, we might have another fire
weather problem with low RH.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 250 AM Thursday: Model guidance has changed very little
over the past few runs regarding a srn stream low pressure
system expected to affect our region during the back half of
the weekend. Each model more or less continues to stick with
its preferred scenario, meaning the GFS is still the fastest and
farthest north with the most potential for some wet snow at high
elevations. Meanwhile, the ECMWF and Canadian continue to show a
more southerly low track with precip suppressed across the fcst
area. Essentially, those differences continue to blend out into
a chance of precip that develops Saturday night and continues
through at least the first half of Sunday, possibly longer if the
more developed, northerly, GFS is correct. There would be enough
cold air available over the mtns that some of the high elevations
would get some wet snow, possibly accumulating at elevations above
5k feet. Temps will be below normal. That system should move off
to the east late Sunday. The new week should begin dry and a few
degrees on the warm side of normal as high pressure builds in
Monday. A warming trend takes place as we enjoy some early Spring
weather through Tuesday into Wednesday courtesy of a broad upper
ridge pushing the sfc high off the Southeast coast. By mid-week,
the guidance generally agrees on a mid/upper low moving along in
the srn stream, then receiving an injection of Gulf moisture as it
reaches the MS River. Confidence is fairly high that the leading
edge of the precip will remain to the west thru sunset Wednesday,
but this system will move quickly east and spread precip over the
area that night. Fortunately, temps look to be warm enough for
all rain. There will be some concern for severe weather potential
depending on the timing of this system as we get into Thursday.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Expect low-end VFR clouds to linger over
the mtns thru mid-morning and then gradually retreat/sct during
the late morning and into the aftn. At present, KAVL is reporting
cigs at 3300 ft. They could see some intermittent MVFR cigs thru
mid-morning, but my confidence wasn't high enough to include in
the taf. They should sct by late morning with mostly clear skies
for the rest of the taf period. The rest of the taf sites should
remain VFR thru the period with mostly clear skies. Winds will
remain gusty across the area thru the aftn with directions going
from WLY to north of west by the aftn. Most sites outside the mtns
should lose their gusts by roughly 00z this evening. At KAVL, winds
will remain NWLY thru the taf period with gusts near 40 kts expected
by late morning. Gusts will eventually weaken thru the evening, but
I kept low-end gusts in the taf thru the end of the period. KAVL
could also see more LLWS thru the morning as the winds strengthen,
however wind directions will be similar so it remains uncertain if
they will meet criteria.

Outlook: Gusty winds diminish late Thursday into early Friday with
VFR conditions expected thru Friday. Another system comes thru this
weekend into Monday with precip and restrictions possible.
