.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Tonight, our advertised strong storm system will begin to eject
out of the Rockies and into the Plains. This will induce a
strengthening nocturnal LLJ of 50+ kt across OK/KS, which is
progged to veer into our region later tonight. Attendant warm,
moist advection will foster burgeoning showers, with some
storms also possible. CAMs suggest potentially a widespread
wing of rain/showers forming initially late evening/early
overnight followed up by more open cell convection initially
that may evolve and become widespread as well on coverage.
This latter round late tonight and very early Tuesday AM could
have a low risk for isolated small hail with some instability
noted in the -10c to -30c growth zone. Some swaths of
0.25"+ of rain are possible with the convective nature leading
to highly variable amounts.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

A strong storm system remains on track for Tuesday into Wednesday.

Overall, continued trends from last nights runs occurred today
with an occluded/filling low passing across our SE service area
late Tuesday night/early Wednesday. This will maintain the
warm sector south of the area closer to near the I-70 corridor
in Missouri and extending into central Illinois, thereby
reducing the risk for HSLC tornadoes, but as mentioned this
potential still needs monitoring for any changes. The primary
impacts from this storm will be heavy rain (mainly Tuesday
PM/evening) followed up by strong winds Wednesday with rain
changing to snow for a time, which the combination of falling
snow and strong winds could make for low visibilities for travel
impacts making this potentially the greater impact from this
system.

We will see a ramping up of the rain/embedded storms Tuesday
PM through evening with the main surge of moisture advection
and dynamics. Much of the rain from this event will occur
during this time with generally 0.75 inch to 1.5 inches
potential, and given the strong dynamics and PWATs progged in
the percentile at over 1-1.2 inches doubling the PWAT would
support some local amounts of 2-2.5 inches. Even though we
are experiencing low soil moisture and river levels, the main
concern is the frost depths which are greater than 12 inches
north/west of the Quad Cities. We've lost a few inches of frost
depth locally and may continue to lose some prior to the rain,
but enough still present to limit absorption/infiltration and
could lead to standing water in poor drainage and low lying
areas, ditches and fields. Isolated flooding/flash flooding
cannot be ruled out where the heaviest rains occur.

The filling low shifting across the area late Tuesday evening/
overnight will be preceded by a dry slot bringing down the
intensity of the rain for many. Still, some light rain, drizzle
and potential fog will be possible near the low track. Then,
as the low moves away late Tuesday night and Wednesday, a
strengthening pressure gradient and impressive LLJ 50+ kt will
foster developing strong NW winds that will likely top advisory
criteria (sustained 30 mph with gusts 45-57 mph). Potential
with cold advection and alignment of the wind fields to possibly
see high wind warning criteria. As temperatures plummet, the
rain will change over to snow for a period of time Wednesday.
These strong winds in concert with the falling snow will bring
the potential for periods of very low visibility posing an
impact to travel. Snow amounts look to be light, with the
probability for 2 inches or more still at 20-50 percent
northwest of a Cedar Rapids to Dubuque line. With this part
of the system potentially being the most impactful it will
be monitored closely and will likely necessitate wind
headlines within the next 24 hours, though can't rule out some
winter headlines possibly being needed across our north/west
service area particularly where amounts of 1-2 inches appears
possible.

We continue to encourage everyone to stay tuned to the forecast!

Beyond, we are still looking at another system late Thursday
night through Friday night with rain/snow, as a fast moving
system traverses a mid level baroclinic zone across the region.
Given this system following somewhat quickly on the heels of
the departing one it will not have as much moisture to work
with and so it would appear as though amounts would be mainly
light.

A few thunderstorms are possible Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Severe weather is not currently anticipated. Heavy rainfall
Tuesday afternoon and evening could lead to standing water in
