.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Headlines: This was a slam dunk to issue a wind advisory for the
entire forecast area for Wednesday. Very strong storm system has
been advertised for several days so confidence at 100%. Be aware
that at some point some areas may need a high wind warning and
we will continue to monitor this potential. For now have wind
gusts capped at 55 mph!

Back to today and tonight: Models have increased the rain
amounts to 1.50 to 2 inches across much of the forecast area
during this time-frame. Storm system will be tracking out of
western KS to near Kenosha, WI by Wednesday. Copious moisture
right out of the Gulf of America and very strong LLJ will
produce widespread rain and some thunderstorms today and
tonight. This amount of rain will lead to rising river levels
but with the recent retreat of frost in the ground this will
have a chance to soak into the ground.

The filling low shifting across the area later tonight will be
preceded by a dry slot bringing down the intensity of the rain
for many. Still, some light rain, drizzle and potential fog will
be possible near the low track.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Wednesday: As the cyclone moves into Lower MI a strengthening
pressure gradient and impressive LLJ 50+ kt will foster
developing strong NW winds that will likely top advisory
criteria (sustained 30 mph with gusts 45-57 mph). Potential with
cold advection and alignment of the wind fields to possibly see
high wind warning criteria. As temperatures plummet, the rain
will change over to snow for a period of time Wednesday. These
strong winds in concert with the falling snow will bring the
potential for periods of very low visibility posing an impact to
travel. With this part of the system potentially being the most
impactful with high winds and falling snow can't rule out some
winter headlines possibly being needed across our north/west
service area particularly where amounts of 1-2 inches appears
possible. Most other areas will see less than 1/2 inch. The snow
and winds will be quickly diminishing Wednesday evening as the
storm system continues to push farther away and a high pressure
ridge builds into the area.

Thursday: A rather nice day with much less wind and plenty of
sunshine as the high pressure ridge moves across. Highs will be
in the 40s.

Here comes the next storm system late Thursday night through
Friday evening with mainly snow, possibly mixed with rain.
Global models indicate a fast moving Colorado Low moving due
east across central MO. This system will be acting on a rather
tight baroclinic zone draped across the forecast area. Given
this system following somewhat quickly on the heels of the
departing one it will not have as much moisture to work with and
so it would appear as though snowfall amounts would be generally
in the 1-2 inch range. Did lower temperatures from what the NBM
depicted given h8 temps in the negative numbers and pcpn falling.

This weekend into early next week: Looks dry with a northwest
flow and normal temperatures for early March. Highs will be in
the 40s with lows in the 20s.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z WEDNESDAY/...

VFR/MVFR conditions will be seen this afternoon and early
evening ahead of approaching system. Challenging aviation
forecast with deepening surface low to move over the area into
northern IL by 09z. Rain will lift north this afternoon and
evening with IFR cigs/vsbys expected by 02-03z onward. Winds
will switch out of the north behind the surface low late in the
period and gust over 30kts. In addition, rain will change over
to snow from west to east after 12z.05, with reductions to vsby
likely due to falling/blowing snow. Further refinements in this
changeover and vsby restrictions will be made in later
forecasts.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

Scattered thunderstorms are expected today into this evening.
Severe weather is not currently anticipated. Heavy rainfall
this afternoon and evening could lead to standing water in poorly
drained areas, ditches and fields, and produce mainly within bank
rises on streams, creeks and rivers. Isolated flooding cannot be
ruled out where the rainfall is heaviest. Widespread 1 to 2 inches
of rainfall is expected through tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

Wednesday, strong northwest winds will develop and become
sustained at 30 to 40 mph with gusts around 55 mph. A wind
advisory is in effect for the entire outlook area. In addition,
as colder air moves in the rain will change over to snow for a
period of time. The strong winds, combined with the falling snow,
may lead to periods of low visibility. Any snow accumulations
would appear to be light but 1 to 2 inches is possible northwest
of a Cedar Rapids to Dubuque line.

Thursday night and Friday: Another storm system will bring more
accumulations of snow of 1 to 2 inches to portions of the area.

Spotter reports of rainfall of more than an inch, and any hail
from thunderstorms would be appreciated.
