.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front dropping south across the area will cause some light
snow showers. Low pressure will then track across the region
bringing a wintry mix late Wednesday which will mainly change over
to rain by late Wednesday night. Colder air will build in behind the
departing surface low, resulting in lake effect snow showers
developing southeast of Lake Ontario Thursday night and Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Lake effect snow showers across southern Jefferson/northern Lewis
counties have become a bit better organized over the past 1-1.5
hours...and based on these trends have briefly upped PoPs and snow
amounts in this area through early this evening. Another 1-2"
appears likely within the most persistent snows...before these
quickly weaken and fall apart as winds rapidly veer following
the passage of a weak cold front.

As the front pushes south of the area tonight, an northeasterly flow
will develop overnight. High res guidance shows very light QPF up to
a few hundredths of an inch south of Lake Ontario which is being
driven by upsloping and lake enhancement. Shallow moisture and cloud
tops beneath the DGZ suggest IF this precipitation develops it would
likely be flurries or freezing drizzle. The more likely scenario is
that it will only result in cloud cover and no precipitation.
Otherwise, the cold front will usher in colder weather with lows in
the teens in most areas and the single digits east of Lake Ontario.

High pressure will briefly ridge southward into the region Wednesday
morning, then low pressure developing across the Ohio Valley will
track across the lower Great Lakes Wednesday night before moving
into southern Quebec Thursday. Although models are in fairly good
agreement on the track of this system, the exact track is very
important for precipitation type and potentially gusty winds.

Snow will push into Western NY Wednesday afternoon, but with the low
tracking to our west there will be strong warm air advection in the
mid levels which will eventually change precipitation over to rain
in areas south of the track of the low. This includes our entire
forecast area except for the St. Lawrence Valley. In Jefferson and
Lewis counties, expecting a mostly snow event, although a period of
sleet, rain, or freezing rain is possible late Wednesday night into
Thursday. Expecting 3 to 7 inches of snow, with greatest amounts in
far northern portions of Jefferson County.

For the rest of the area, thermal profiles suggest a changeover to
rain will occur, with a period of sleet or freezing rain likely
before this happens. The strong southeasterly flow to the south of
this low will push temperatures above freezing which will limit
freezing rain accumulations. For most of Western NY, expecting
general 1 to 4 inches of snow before the changeover, with light ice
accumulations up to a tenth of an inch possible. Also, with the
ground and most surfaces frozen, it may continue to be icy even
after surface temperatures rise just above freezing. Because of
the combination of light snow accumulations followed by the
freezing rain, will issue Winter Weather advisories for the
entire forecast area. Less QPF in the Lower Genesee River Valley
and Western Finger Lakes, so impacts will be less here.

Winds will be gusty in downslope regions Wednesday night, and across
the rest of the area Thursday. Could see localized gusts to 50 mph
off the Chautauqua Ridge Wednesday night and northeast of Lake Erie
Thursday. Modest LLJ of 45 to 50 knots at 925mb could support
advisory level gusts depending on the track of the low.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Much colder air pours back across the lower Great Lakes region
Thursday night in the wake of Thursday's cold fropa. This will set
the stage for another round of lake effect snow, especially off Lake
Ontario on a NW to WNW flow.

Off Lake Ontario...band will organize first half of Thursday night
across Oswego County, and possibly far northern Cayuga County. Flow
turns a bit more northwesterly later Thursday night which will
orient the heart of the band a bit further south across southern
Oswego, northern Cayuga, and northeastern Wayne counties...where it
is expected to remain through much of Friday, although will start to
weaken a bit Friday afternoon while slowly shifting a bit to the
north as winds turn more WNW. A well-established upstream lake
connection will help to enhance the band as well. The potential does
exist for significant accumulations, however there remains
uncertainty with the exact placement of the higher snowfall amounts.
Will continue mention in the HWO, but as confidence in placement and
amounts grow, headlines may well be needed.

Off Lake Erie...lake effect snow showers are likely Thursday night,
however will be much weaker owed a lack of an upstream lake
connection, cross-lake flow, and a good deal of ice cover. Thus,
accumulations will be manageable, with the highest amounts across
the terrain areas just E/SE of Lake Erie. High pressure ridges in
across this area shutting down and LES fairly quickly heading into
Friday morning, with just scattered light snow showers possible
through the first half of the day.

Other than a few lingering light lake effect snow showers east of
Lake Ontario Friday evening, expect a brief quiet period Friday
night as an area of transient high pressure quickly crosses the
area. Quickly enough in fact, that some light snow shower activity
associated with the next low pressure system rapidly approaching
from the west, may get into areas west of the Genesee Valley as
early as late Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Two low pressure systems will impact our area back-to-back Saturday,
and then again on Sunday. Weaker wave will be Saturday, followed by
a much stronger wave on Sunday. A plethora of precip types will be
possible with both systems, and will be contingent upon the exact
track of each system, which is currently close to our region. Best
chances for all snow will be across the North Country, with best
mixed rain/snow toward the NY/PA line. There will be the potential
for much more significant precipitation with the much stronger storm
for the second half of the weekend.

The split flow regime across western North America will supply
another southern stream shortwave, which will reach the Ohio Valley
by late Saturday night. This system will reach the Northeast US
Sunday, with the latest model consensus in much better agreement
showing at least some phasing with an additional strong northern
stream shortwave moving southeast across central Ontario Province.
This more phased solution, now shown by the 'Big 3' will result in a
stronger system and greater potential for heavy precipitation across
our region.

Latest model guidance suggests an initial weak frontal wave will
cross the Great Lakes Saturday, supporting widespread light snow,
possibly mixed with some rain across the lower terrain south of Lake
Ontario. The next stronger wave will then pass either just southeast
of our area or possibly right across our area later Saturday night
and Sunday, with the likelihood for a fairly strong surface low (sub
990 mb) moving from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast. This second
wave has the potential to produce heavy snow or a mix of rain and
snow if the system tracks right across our area, especially with a
stronger low having the potential to advect in even warmer air from
the south. This will also have the potential to bring some stronger
winds to the region, the degree to which will also be tied to the
track of the low.

Bitterly cold airmass accompanied by some gusty winds then set to
pour across the lower Great Lakes region and Northeast for the first
half of the new work week. Expect highs in the single digits and
teens, with lows ranging from the mid single digits to below zero
across the higher terrain. Would not be surprised if cold weather
headlines are eventually needed for a least a portion of our area
during this timeframe. As an added bonus, there will also be the
potential for accumulating lake snows east and southeast of the
lakes.

.AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Mainly VFR expected this evening, exception continuing east of
Lake Ontario (KART), where high end MVFR/low VFR CIGs likely to
continue with a westerly flow off Lake Ontario. Winds will
quickly veer north then northeast from north to south late this
evening into the overnight in the wake of the cold fropa. This
will help the lower CIGS around KART improve, while CIGS at the
KBUF/KIAG/KROC sites likely lower into the MVFR range with the
now N to NE flow off Lake Ontario. Precipitation chances will be
low, however a few scattered light snow showers cannot be ruled
out south of Lake Ontario, mainly from the Thruway north
(KBUF/KIAG/KROC).

ENE flow will continue off Lake Ontario through early afternoon on
Wednesday, thus expect MVFR/low VFR CIGS to hang on across the
KBUF/KIAG/KROC. At the same time, deeper moisture will be encroaching
from the southwest in association with the next system expected to
impact the area starting later Wednesday afternoon. With this in
mind expect KJHW to see CIGS lowering to MVFR by late Wednesday
morning in advance of the aforementioned low pressure system.
Otherwise, VFR expected east of Lake Ontario (KART).

Looking a bit beyond the 18Z TAF period, expect deteriorating
conditions across western NY as light snow overspreads the region
from southwest to northeast later Wednesday afternoon.

Outlook...

Wednesday afternoon...VFR becoming MVFR/IFR in light snow from
western NY eastward to the Finger Lakes.

Wednesday night through Thursday...Widespread IFR with snow changing
to a wintry mix. Likely changing to plain rain early Thursday
morning before changing back to snow showers Thursday afternoon.

Thursday night...IFR in lake effect snow SE of lakes, otherwise VFR.

Friday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers. Local IFR in
lake effect snow southeast of Lake Ontario.

Saturday and Sunday...IFR in snow.

Moderate westerlies will continue to produce Small Craft Advisory
conditions on the eastern portion of Lake Ontario today. A cold
front will then bring a period of north to northeast winds through
Wednesday night ahead of low pressure approaching from the Ohio
Valley. This will likely bring another round of Small Craft Advisory
conditions to Lake Ontario, with potentially higher winds possible.

Low pressure will then move across the lower Great Lakes Thursday
morning, Westerly winds will quickly increase as colder air pours
back in behind this system, with a period of gales possible
Thursday, especially on Lake Ontario. Based on this, issued a
Gale Watch for the eastern half of Lake Ontario.
