Decent west and northwesterly winds were in place across the
western and northern half of the plains this morning.  Speeds were
in the 10-20 mph range with gusts to 30 mph.  Along and east of the
divide into the foothills there were some gusts to around 50 mph.
Satellite pictures were showing a bit of upper level cloudiness
moving into the western half of the CWA. Temperatures were mainly in
the 40s across the plains at this time with 20s and 30s elsewhere.

Concerning updates, will adjust winds, sky and temperatures a bit
based on current situation. Grids are in pretty good shape.  New
model data continues to show the dry and breezy conditons out on
the eastern plains this afternoon, so the Red Flag warning highlights
are on track.

.SHORT TERM /Through Tonight/...
Issued at 429 AM MDT Sun Mar 16 2025

Current observations show light orographic snow showers remain
fairly anchored to the highest terrain early this morning. These
will subside through the early morning as an upper-level ridge moves
eastward over the forecast area. Water vapor imagery shows
subsidence setting in along the eastern slopes of the Front Range
Mountains indicating the beginning of mountain wave enhancement.
Winds have increased in the last hour or two, with our normal
windy spots in western Boulder County seeing 60-70 mph gusts at
the time of this writing. With forecast soundings showing a stable
layer near ridge top with winds generally within 30 degrees or
perpendicular to the mountains, this mountain wave is expected to
stick around through the day, bringing some gusty winds to the
eastern slopes of the Front Range. Gusts between 65-75 mph will be
possible at the highest elevations, with some 35-40 mph winds
making their way into the lower foothills through the afternoon.
With mountain wave enhancement and sufficient mixing expected
this afternoon, gusty winds are expected across the Cheyenne Ridge
and adjacent plains, spreading south and east into Washington
County. Winds coming off the Palmer will also enhance winds along
eastern Elbert County and Lincoln County. With high temps expected
to climb into the 60s and relative humidities dropping below 15%,
the Fire Weather Watch was upgraded to a Red Flag Warning and
expanded to include a few more zones where latest guidance shows
some slightly stronger gusts persisting for the afternoon hours.

Dry conditions are expected overnight with tapering winds expected
through the evening. Mostly clear skies will allow temperatures to
cool into the 20s and 30s across the forecast area.

.LONG TERM /Monday through Saturday/...

We'll go from warm and windy Monday to cool, wet and windy Tuesday
night as a strong low develops, and then we'll have a couple more
chances at mountain snow and plains showers with shortwaves
Thursday night/Friday and again over the weekend.

For Monday, our forecast of a warm and breezy day looks on track.
There's some question about how far out onto the plains the winds
extend, as the Front Range mountain wave will likely hold the
winds to in and near the foothills early in the day. But as the
wave diminishes, we're likely to see the winds spread eastward at
least through the I-25 corridor, and likely east close to Fort
Morgan and Limon late in the day. We'll issue a Fire Weather Watch
for the western part of the plains, southern foothills and South
Park where the gusty winds are most likely and humidities will be
low.

There's not a lot of change to the forecast for the shortwave that
will develop a low east of the Rockies Tuesday night. There is a
little slowing trend in most of the models, with the GFS remaining
a few hours faster. The NBM guidance is lagging this trend a bit,
so we did slow down the incoming PoPs and cold air a little from
that, moving towards the idea of the precipitation spreading from
north to south across the plains from early to mid afternoon to
early evening, then ending late Tuesday night. Temperatures should
drop pretty well behind the front, from the 50s into the upper 30s
to lower 40s in a couple of hours, but then they may be slower to
get cold enough for snow. We'll carry a rain/snow mix in most
areas in the afternoon and then mostly snow by early evening.

With the quick speed of the system, precipitation should be light
with three exceptions. First, orographic snow on the ridges could
be significant with decent winds and fairly deep neutral lapse
rates Tuesday afternoon and evening. The duration of these
conditions won't be that long, maybe 12 hours, but the snowfall
rates could be substantial. Second, there will likely be a quick
shot of fairly strong upslope winds into the southern foothills
and Palmer Divide area with moisture and instability, and probably
just cold enough for snow in the 6,000 to 7,000 foot layer in the
late afternoon/early evening. This could back into Denver for a
few hours. And third, if the system develops rapidly enough there
could be an area of heavier precipitation somewhere around east
central Colorado as the low winds up. It's quite possible this
won't happen that quickly and there won't be an intense maxima
there, though a little upslope enhancement around Limon is likely.
The GFS is pretty high end with a bullseye of 0.6 inch of QPF in
6 hours east of Limon, this seems unlikely. But we'll have a swath
of quarter inch QPF which could be a couple inches of snow along
with a lot of wind for some travel impacts. The timing on this may
not come together, it could be too warm to matter, or too quick
to get that much precipitation. But there is some threat of travel
issues east of Denver Tuesday night.

After that, the storm moves out quickly with pretty good drying
Wednesday morning. There could be some lingering mountain snow
showers, and there will still be some northwest winds behind the
departing system. NBM is mostly accepted from that point on with
a quick ridge Thursday followed by a sharp shortwave in northwest
flow Thursday night/Friday and another one that has more
disagreement on details over the weekend. Both will probably bring
an uptick in wind and a period of light to moderate snow for the
mountains, and a quick chance of rain or snow showers for the
plains.

Decent west-northwesterly winds can be expected at DIA through
the afternoon hours. Gusts to 30-35 knots are a good bet.  By
shortly after sunset, 02Z-ish, Drainage winds should kick in. They
may be mixed with a bit more southwesterly wind direction. There
will be no ceiling issues.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 429 AM MDT Sun Mar 16 2025

Warm, dry, and windy conditions will lead to widespread elevated
to critical fire weather conditions across the lower elevations
today. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 7 PM today due
to relative humidities dropping to 9-15% and winds gusting from
25-40 mph across portions of the plains. There will still be
elevated fire weather conditions outside of the warned areas, but
gusty winds are not expected to persist for as long in these
locations.

It will be warmer on Monday with lower humidities. Winds will also
be a little stronger in most areas, though it may take some time
for the winds to spread east across the plains and they may not
get to the more eastern areas. Critical fire weather conditions
are likely in areas from the lower foothills across the I-25
corridor and over the western part of the Colorado plains. While
humidities will be higher in the foothills southwest of Denver and
South Park, wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph in the afternoon will
create critical conditions there as well.

Tuesday will start warm, dry and windy, and critical conditions
are possible again for a few hours in the middle of the day if a
cold front is slow to arrive. Then strong north to northwest winds
and precipitation will spread from the mountains and Wyoming
southeast across the plains by early evening. A little snow is
likely in most areas, with a brief period of heavier snow possible
over the mountain ridges and in areas just west through south and
possibly southeast of Denver.

There will be quick drying Wednesday, with warming for Thursday.
It will remain breezy to windy with near critical conditions
possible at lower elevations in the afternoons.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

It looks to be dry enough and windy enough to keep the Red Flag
Warning for the northern and eastern plains going from noon to 7
PM this evening. Winds of 40 to 65 mph are expected over the
higher mountain ridges and foothills today. For the plains today,
15 to 30 mph winds will blow with gusts up to to 40 mph.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Monday will be even warmer, with 30 to 40 mph wind gusts in the
afternoon for the mountain valleys and areas just east of the
mountains, and up to 50 mph over the east slopes of the Front
Range and in South Park. This will create critical fire weather
conditions from the east slopes out across the plains to around
Fort Morgan and Limon.

Another storm system will bring snow to the mountains by Tuesday
morning, with rain and snow spreading across the plains Tuesday
afternoon and changing to snow by evening. Strong winds gusting up
to 50 mph are also expected Tuesday night, and some travel impacts
from the snow and wind are likely over the mountain passes and
possible in the foothills near Denver, and in the areas just south
and southeast of Denver. While heavy snow is not expected on the
plains, a combination of light snow and blowing snow is likely
Tuesday evening.

Additional weather systems are expected to bring light to moderate
snow in the mountains and a chance of rain or snow at lower
elevations Thursday night into Friday and again over the weekend.
