  Tuesday, with snow likely (50-80%) for the lower elevations
  Tuesday night.

There have been a few waves of snow showers in the mountains that
have brought accumulating snow to areas like Berthoud Pass this
evening. Satellite indicates another wave or two of snow showers
will be possible tonight in the mountains although the majority
of the accumulation for this small event has already occurred.
Nonetheless, Berthoud Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel may have
slick travel conditions due to the snow tonight and tomorrow
morning.

Otherwise, the low temperatures tonight will be a couple of
degrees below normal with light winds.

.SHORT TERM /Through Sunday/...
Issued at 141 PM MDT Sat Mar 15 2025

Increasing northwest flow aloft is advecting modest moisture into
the high country this afternoon with low-level lapse rates steep
enough for locally moderate convective showers at times.
Accumulations will be quite variable as a result, generally
ranging between 1-4" and favoring the central Front Range
mountains the most. Some of this mid-level moisture is spilling
over into the plains with some high-based showers and virga, but
little if anything will reach the ground. The patchy 15% PoPs
currently in place seem reasonable given the fairly dry near-
surface conditions. Those areas with high-based showers,
especially northeast of Denver, may see gusts 25-35 mph through
the afternoon and into early evening from weak outflows.

Winds aloft will strengthen overnight with a weak stable layer
helps propagate a few stronger gusts into the foothills and
adjacent wind-prone areas. However, orientation of prevailing
winds, lack of a defined critical layer and some lingering
upstream moisture (a few light snow showers may persist in the
mountains) should dampen any significant downwind amplification.
Nonetheless, the higher elevations will see gusts 55-75 mph
through Sunday morning.

Tomorrow will bring milder conditions under mostly clear skies
east of the mountains, with highs rising approximately 10 degrees
compered to today. The extension of gustier winds into the lower
elevations looks rather patchy, with the best opportunity for
breezier winds with gusts 25-35 mph extending from the Cheyenne
Ridge eastward along the vicinity of the WY/NE state line. It's
these areas that will be more susceptible to higher fire danger,
so a Fire Weather Watch was hoisted for the north/northeast
plains.

.LONG TERM /Sunday night through Saturday/...
Issued at 234 PM MDT Sat Mar 15 2025

It will be a windy Sunday night for the Front Range mountains and
foothills as cross sections indicate a mountain wave with relatively
strong cross barrier flow of 40-55 knots. However, due to a weak
stable layer we don't expect this wave to be very strong. Wind
gusts of 50-60 mph are expected in the high elevations with 20-30
mph gusts in the wind prone areas along the foothills.

Monday will be about 10-15 degrees above normal. Westerly downslope
winds will aid in compressional heating, allowing temperatures to
reach lower 70s for majority of the plains. However, increased cloud
cover could inhibit some areas from reaching their forecasted high
temperatures. During the day, low-level lapse rates will reach
between 7-8 dg/km across the plains, allowing deep mixing bringing
breezy winds to the surface. 25-35 mph gusts will occur over the
foothills and central plains. These breezy winds combined with
relative humidity values as low as 10% at times will create
elevated to near critical fire weather conditions, especially in
areas that did not receive measurable precipitation from this past
system.

Ensemble guidance has continued to favor a trough traversing
Colorado Tuesday. Moisture ahead of this system will enter the
mountains late Monday night, bringing light orographic snow to the
area. Tuesday morning, snowfall rates will increase to moderate to
briefly heavy at times along the high country due to stronger
forcing. A winter weather advisory may be needed for the
mountains, but will hold off for now. For the plains, a rain/snow
mix is expected as temperatures may be too warm for snow
initially. As a cold front associated with this system moves
through, strong northerly winds will cool temperatures enough for
snow. At this time, the Palmer Divide and southern foothills
should get more accumulations than the plains due to favorable
upslope flow and cooler temperatures.

There will be lingering orographic snow showers on Wednesday as the
system pushes east into the Central Plains. A ridge will start
building to our west and settle over our area by Thursday. This
will allow temperatures to climb up to the high 50s/low 60s.
However, another trough should cross Colorado on Friday, lowering
temperatures and bringing another round of snow showers to the
mountains.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday/...

VFR to persist through the TAF period. WSW winds continue to hang
on late tonight with drainage still expected before sunrise.

The main challenge for Sunday continues to be the winds. First,
depending on the amplitude of a developing mountain wave early
morning, winds at KBJC have about a 50/50 shot of turning to a
light southeasterly around 11Z or continuing with a near 10-12kt
SW. With the majority of hi-res guidance leaning towards the light
southeast, have added a VRB for a few hours during the expected
timing of the mountain wave development. These situations are hard
to lock down until they begin. By 15-16Z, winds will become gusty
westerlies with gust from 25-35 kts expected through the
afternoon.

For the rest of the day, with aid from the mountain wave and a
well mixed environment, KDEN and KAPA will generally see west to

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Scattered snow showers will bring light snow accumulations to the
mountain this afternoon, with locally slick conditions likely at
times over passes. Otherwise, no hazardous weather conditions are
expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Warm, dry and breezy conditions will prevail through Monday.
Sunday there will be near critical fire weather conditions in the
northern plains. Monday there will be isolated near critical fire
weather conditions along the foothills, South Park and eastern
plains.

Another winter storm system is expected as early as Tuesday for
the mountains. The plains will see a rain/snow mix Tuesday night
into Wednesday.
