A series of multi-hazard Pacific storms will impact central and
northern New Mexico tonight through next weekend:

- Fire Weather: Elevated to locally critical fire weather
  conditions are likely in eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon as
  westerly winds trend stronger. Critical fire weather conditions
  become more widespread on Monday afternoon when winds increase
  further and humidity drops. Strong winds stick around Tuesday,
  but a slight increase in moisture may limit critical conditions
  to only southeastern areas.

- Strong Winds and Blowing Dust: Strong to damaging winds will
  create areas of blowing dust that may reduce visibility on
  roadways, including in Roswell, each afternoon Sunday through
  Tuesday, with the highest confidence on Monday.

- Slick Travel: The first round of light rain and high elevation
  snow showers moves across the area Saturday night though Sunday,
  generating brief winter driving conditions. The second round of
  snow will favor northern New Mexico Monday through early
  Tuesday.

- Outlook: Confidence is increasing in another round of strong
  winds and critical fire weather in central and eastern areas
  Thursday and Friday. A colder and wetter Pacific storm may bring
  more widespread precipitation as well.

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 234 PM MST Sat Mar 1 2025

Strong to damaging wind gusts, critical fire weather conditions, and
blowing dust will be the main concerns Sunday through Tuesday, with
the greatest impacts on Monday when it will be the windiest and
driest in most areas. A quick shot of rain and mountain snow will
move across the area from west to east tonight through tomorrow,
then another storm brings light snow to western and northern areas
Monday and Tuesday. After a quiet Wednesday, winds increase again on
Thursday and Friday ahead of yet another Pacific storm system. This
storm has trended both colder and wetter than the two that will
impact the area through Tuesday, although eastern New Mexico may
once again see critical fire weather conditions late in the week
before the moisture arrives.

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Sunday night)

An H5 low centered between Yuma and Blythe early this afternoon will
progress eastward across AZ tonight then across central NM Sunday.
Forecast confidence is very high (>90%) on the track, timing, and
depth of the H5 wave thru Sunday night as it crosses from west to
east just south of the I-40 corridor. This southerly track has led
to decreasing peak wind gusts Sunday in the area where the current
High Wind Watch is in effect. The latest NBM probs are still 70-90%
for wind gusts >50mph in the area from Lincoln County into southwest
Chaves. Trends have been decreasing gusts in all guidance numbers
farther north toward Corona, Clines Corners, and Las Vegas. The High
Wind Watch may be replaced by a Wind Advisory for all areas except
Ruidoso to Dunken where gusts to 60 mph are possible after sunrise
Sunday (30-50%). Some blowing dust may occur given the extended
stretch of very dry conditions this winter. The other notable change
today was for deeper moisture advection into eastern NM ahead of the
H5 low late tonight and Sunday morning. Snow totals came up slightly
in the Sangre de Cristo Mts where 1-2" is possible above 8,500 ft
(20-40% chance). A band of showers and storms is also shown on the
latest HRRR, HREF, and NAM12 pivoting thru northeast NM ahead of the
upper low and surface cold front Sunday morning. SPC added thunder
to the latest convective outlook. Any lightning strikes across the
northeast plains of NM will bear watching as high winds and very low
humidity are looking very likely for Monday (>80%).

.LONG TERM...
(Monday through Friday)

Monday is setting up to be a very active weather day with critical
fire weather conditions, strong to damaging wind gusts, blowing
dust, and mountain snow. The upper-low that will be bringing us this
weather will be traverse Utah and Colorado on Monday, placing the
dry conveyer belt directly over central and eastern NM. Pre-frontal
mixing heights on Monday afternoon will be in the 8,000ft to
12,000ft range, probably the deepest we've seen since the Fall. A
unidirectional wind profile will help strong and dry southwest winds
mix down to the sfc throughout the afternoon. A High Wind Watch has
already been issued for portions of eastern NM and this will likely
be expanded in the coming days as forecast confidence increases.
Two-month precipitation anomalies range from 40% to as low as 5% of
normal across eastern NM so the soil out there is dry and ready to
blow around with the combination of strong winds and an unstable
atmosphere. A dust storm on the southwest side of Roswell where
blowing dust is notorious seems like a guarantee with this set-up.

A potent Pacific front will move across the state from west to east
throughout the day as the base of the trough swings through. Many
areas may hit their peak gust with this frontal passage as winds
turn around to the west. Ensemble guidance has been trending
slightly faster and deeper with the progression of the upper-low
(and associated cold front) so the exact timing of the frontal
passage is still in question. There will be enough moisture on the
west side of the low for snow. Since most of the moisture will be
post-frontal atmosphere, it will be mostly snow, except for some
rain that may mix in for lower elevations like Farmington. A quick
burst snow may impact travel along I-40 near the AZ border on Monday
night as well as mountain routes in the northern areas. Furthermore,
northerly flow on the backside of the Low could create some moderate
travel impacts from the combination of snow and blowing snow along I-
25 at Raton Pass Tuesday morning, however confidence is low. Post-
frontal winds will be mostly pressure gradient driven on Tuesday as
the ~985mb sfc Low over KS moves off to the east. Areas along and
east of the central mountain chain will be very windy once again and
winds could remain strong from Monday afternoon all the way though
Tuesday evening, with only brief drop in wind speeds Monday night.

Less windy and drier weather prevails Wednesday as zonal flow
reinstates itself over New Mexico. The progressive synoptic pattern
is expected to continue late week as another longwave Pacific trough
moves inland. The deeper and slower trend has continued for both
GEFS and EPS guidance so confidence is beginning to increase for more
widespread precipitation during the Thursday through next Saturday
timeframe. It should be noted that the 500mb heights and 700mb temps
both appear to be lower with this storm system so snow levels may
drop down to valley floors on the backside of the Low. That being
said, the strong winds may once again be the main impact from this
storm system. Currently, Friday appears to be the windiest day with
a Pacific frontal passage, but a large spread among ensemble
guidance suggests this could change in the coming days.

this low, backing out of the north Sunday morning and finally
northwest to westerly Sunday afternoon. Precipitation will be
sparse, but showers will favor the higher terrain along and north
of I-40 as well as portions of the northeastern plains of NM. Have
included a few PROB30s at KGUP, KLVS and KTCC to account for
this. Shower activity is currently being orographically driven
along the Mogollon Rim this hour, expected to cross into western
NM between now and 10Z. At this time, VFR conditions are forecast
to persist at all TAF sites, although brief MVFR to locally IFR
conditions will be possible over aforementioned areas of the
higher terrain of northern NM, including KAXX and KRTN. LLWS will
also be a concern Sunday morning, notably over the east-central
to southeastern plains of NM including KTCC and KROW. Conditions
clear out as northwesterly to westerly winds fill in behind the
exiting low Sunday afternoon. Westerly to northwesterly winds
taper off past 00Z Sunday evening.

SOUTHERN, CENTRAL, AND EASTERN NM...

A fire growing pattern will develop Sunday thru Tuesday as a series
of potent upper level low pressure systems pass through the southern
Rockies. The first system will move east along the I-40 corridor
with strong west winds over the central and southern high terrain
Sunday. Subcritical humidity will focus mainly over southern NM but
a couple hours of marginally critical fire weather is very likely
(>70%) within Curry and Roosevelt counties Sunday. Enough moisture
and instability will be present over northern NM to generate light
rain and snow showers in the high terrain. A few lightning strikes
are even possible over northeast NM Sunday morning.

A potent dry slot will then shift across the region Monday with
widespread strong winds and subcritical humidity. Poor to fair
recoveries along and south of I-40 Sunday night will give way to
several hours of single digit humidity, especially across eastern
NM. Southwest wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph will be common as well.
Forecast confidence is very high (>80%) for critical conditions and
potential rapid fire spread given RFTI maxes out with extreme to
historical values, the latest ERCs are above the 75th percentile,
the Hot-Dry-Windy index is above the 95th percentile for eastern NM,
and the Dec-Jan-Feb period was the driest on record for some areas.
Another night of poor to fair recoveries is expected Monday night
for eastern NM followed by strong northwest winds Tuesday. This next
wave will have better moisture and even colder temperatures across
northern NM where additional light rain/snow is possible. Southern
and southeastern NM may see another round of critical conditions but
confidence is not high enough at this time to issue any Fire Weather
Watches.

A break is anticipated Wednesday followed by another period of dry
and windy conditions possibly Thursday and Friday.
