.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will slide just off of our coast tonight, then lift
northeast away from the region on Sunday. High pressure builds in
Sunday night and especially Monday. A powerful storm is forecast to
track to our west and north later Tuesday and Wednesday, sweeping a
potent cold front across our area Tuesday night. The weather calms
for Thursday into Friday, however another strong storm system may
then move in to start next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Storm system continues moving through the region presently. Moderate
to heavy snow is breaking out across northern portions of the
forecast area, with rain in southern and coastal areas. In between,
as of 3PM a band of transition is rapidly moving northward through
south-central NJ into southeastern PA. Philadelphia has already
transitioned to sleet and rain and even much of Chester County now
appears to have shifted to a mix.

Thus, no major changes to the forecast as of 3PM. Still watching
closely areas north of I-76 and west of I-95 which are looking at a
period of heavy snow before the changeover. Guidance in this area
has gone in several directions, with some runs of the RAP and RGEM
notably snowier while others like the HREF nudging downward. Overall
not much confidence in changing the snowfall forecast so did not
make more than minor tweaks. Still think warm advection with low
level jet will change precip to rain overnight in the advisory area
but remaining generally snow or mix in the warning area, resulting
in the highest totals across the Poconos and NW NJ. Temps fairly
steady at present should warm a little into the evening. Where
rain mainly falls, still looks like around an inch or maybe a bit
more, which given antecedent conditions may be troublesome in
spots, but this still looks relatively isolated. Strong winds
still expected to develop along the NJ coast this eve, with
gusts possibly reaching 45 mph right on the beaches, but for now
think we stay just shy of advisory.

Precip will dwindle for a time after midnight, then some
wraparound rain/snow will move back in overnight into the
morning Sunday. However, this looks pretty light with little if
any additional accumulation in the advisory area, but perhaps an
additional inch in the warning area. Further south, some mixing
may take place along I-95 again but not expecting any accums,
for sure on Sunday. Lingering precip gradually winds down as the
system heads northeastward away from us later Sunday, but don't
expect any sunshine... clearing likely is delayed until after
sunset. Highs will be close to normal, upper 30s to lower 40s
overall.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Summary...Strong surface high pressure slides across our area
during Monday before gradually shifting across New England
Monday night. A powerful storm then tracks up the Ohio Valley
and into the eastern Great Lakes later Tuesday into Wednesday,
with significant flooding rain and a period of strong to
damaging winds possible. A potent cold front sweeps across our
area Tuesday night/early Wednesday.

Synoptic Overview...Amplifying upper-level ridging will support
strong high pressure at the surface on Monday. At this same
time, potent shortwave energy is forecast to eject into the
central and southern Plains as a deep upper-level trough
develops. This trough will probably close off as it shifts east
and northeast through Tuesday. A surface low will develop in
response and then deepen quite a bit as it tracks generally up
the Ohio Valley and into the eastern Great Lakes region by later
Tuesday into early Wednesday. It will then track into portions
of eastern Canada and then gradually weaken.

For Monday...High pressure will provide dry conditions and much lighter
winds, although some return flow will start to take place later
Monday night on the backside of the high. In addition, low-
level warm air advection will start to get underway as low
pressure continues to organize across the southern Plains to
lower Mississippi Valley Monday night. High temperatures are
forecast to be in the low/mid 40s across the region (mid/upper
30s at higher elevations), then mostly 20s at night (upper teens
at higher elevations, low 30s along the Jersey Shore and
Delaware Beaches).

For Tuesday and Wednesday...A strong upper-level trough will lift
across the eastern U.S. during this time frame, and it will drive a
powerful surface low up the Ohio Valley and across the eastern Great
Lakes. This will place our region on the warmer side and therefore
mostly rain is expected. There is however a short window of
opportunity that it starts as some snow or a mix mainly north and
west of I-95, however with robust warm air advection any of this
will quickly change to rain. The rain will be heavy at times
especially late Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night before tapering
off to some showers early Wednesday morning. A southeasterly jet at
925 mb on the order of 50-75 knots later Tuesday and Tuesday night
will advect in ample moisture off the Atlantic. In addition, this
flow veers to southwesterly at 500 mb and increases to 70-100
knots. The guidance shows an extensive plume of high
precipitable water (1.0-1.5 inches) for this time of year
connected all the way into the western Caribbean. This amount of
moisture along with strong forcing for ascent will bring
widespread rain (2-3 inches likely, with 4 inches possible)
across the entire region with the heaviest occurring Tuesday
night. A period of enhanced rainfall rates combined with already
saturated ground, which will be even more swollen given snow
melt across the northern areas, will significantly increase the
flooding risk.

The upper-level trough or closed low may take on a negative tilt
Tuesday night, and this may inject some elevated instability
especially closer to frontal passage and therefore a few rumbles of
thunder could be possible. The thunder potential is of low
confidence, but something to watch especially given the intense wind
field not all that far above the surface ahead of the cold
front. Some wind headlines will likely be needed especially for
the coastal areas, although strong low-level warm air advection
and deep moisture profile may prevent at least some of the wind
from mixing down to the surface. However, with the low-level
winds being southeasterly, there will likely be an area of
stronger winds along the immediate coast, as a result of the
decreased friction over the open waters. Overall, there is still
potential for a period of strong to even locally damaging winds
especially closer to the coast.

A potent cold front crosses our area during Tuesday night into
early Wednesday and that will quickly end the steady rain early
Wednesday morning. Some light rain/showers may linger through
Wednesday morning, particularly across the northern half of the
region, with a bit of moisture wrapping around the departing low.
The strong southeast to south flow ahead of the cold front will
bring in much milder air across the area and therefore
temperatures are forecast to rise for the majority of Tuesday
night. The return of cold air advection in the wake of the cold
front will result in better vertical mixing profiles through
Wednesday and therefore it will be a breezy to windy day (wind
gusts to around 40 mph). Temperatures will also likely be
falling through the daytime Wednesday as the cold air advection
takes over.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview: A brief period of tranquil weather before the next
system arrives over the weekend, bringing another chance for
rain.

Details:

Thursday into Friday...our respite from the active weather pattern
will be brief as a surface ridge quickly slides northeast over the
region. With a brief window for cold air advection on the backside
of the Tue/Wed system, temperatures will be slightly lower than what
we see on Wednesday, with highs both Thursday and Friday ranging
from the mid 30s to near 50. This is still about 5 degrees above
normal for this time of year.

Saturday...Next low pressure system lifts northeastward from the
deep south into the Great Lakes region. As with the Tue/Wed system,
the far inland track of this system means that we're likely to have
more rain than snow. However, still too far out to determine
specific details especially with regards to the extent and types of
impacts we could see from this system.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Today...IFR/LIFR. KPNE/KPHL/KILG have shifted to RA while
KTTN/KRDG/KABE remain snow. KTTN may transition to rain soon, with
KRDG to follow, and KABE last. E winds around 15 kt with 20 to
30 kt gusts. High confidence overall, with low confidence on
timing.

Tonight...IFR/LIFR conditions in RASN at KRDG/KABE and RA
elsewhere. Precipitation tapers off late. Winds turn N 10 to 15
kt with gusts up to 20 kt by 06Z, then diminish to 5 to 10 kt
prior to 12Z Sunday. Moderate confidence overall.

Sunday...IFR/LIFR, lifting to MVFR later in the day. Generally
light RA or RASN. W-NW winds 5 to 10 kt. Low confidence.

Outlook...

Monday...VFR. NW wind 5 to 10 kt becoming light and variable
overnight. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday...Prevailing MVFR and some IFR conditions likely in rain.
Rain could be heavy Tuesday night. Mix of rain and snow possible at
the onset of precipitation, primarily N and W of KPHL, but should
quickly switch over to rain. E and SE winds 15 to 25 kt with gusts
30 to 40 kt. Strongest winds may be Tuesday night. Moderate
confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on timing
details and the lowest conditions.

Wednesday...MVFR and IFR conditions gradually improving to VFR
through the day. SW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 35 kt,
becoming W and decreasing overnight. Moderate confidence on the
overall pattern, but low confidence on the timing of the improving
conditions.

Thursday...VFR conditions with SW winds 10 to 20 with gusts up to 25
kt. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Rest of Today...Small Craft Advisory conditions with E winds 15 to
20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt. Seas build to 3 to 5 feet. VSBY
restrictions in rain.

Tonight...As low pressure lifts towards Delmarva and southern
NJ, the pressure gradient tightens over the waters. Gale warning
remains for NJ coast. SCA conditions on DE ocean waters and DE Bay.
E winds 20 to 30 kt with 35 to 40 kt gusts along the NJ ocean
waters. Winds turn N-NW 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 30 kt late.
Seas build to 6 to 10 feet. VSBY restrictions in rain.

Sunday...SCA conditions. NW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to
30 kt. Seas subside to 4 to 6 feet.

Outlook...

Monday...Once seas subside below 5 ft, winds and seas should stay
below SCA criteria through Monday night.

Tuesday...Another storm system will bring increasing southeasterly
winds by Tuesday afternoon. The peak of the winds is expected
Tuesday night, with solidly gale conditions likely, and could get
close to storm force, especially on the Atlantic coastal waters.
Seas will subsequently increase as well and could be above 15 ft by
Tuesday night.

Wednesday...Winds will subside slightly as they shift to
southwesterly Wednesday morning, but should remain near or above
gale force for much of the day.

Wednesday night into Thursday...southwesterly winds should subside
below gale force, but winds and seas are likely to remain elevated
in SCA conditions until later in the day on Thursday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Today into Sunday storm...The potential for moderate to heavy
precipitation returns later today and tonight with a coastal
system impacting the region. Already saturated ground from heavy
rainfall during previous storm systems will keep the region
more sensitive to flooding potential. With total precipitation
amounts 0.5-1.50 inches, significant flooding is unlikely with
this coastal system. However, some minor flooding of low lying
or poor drainage areas is certainly possible. In addition, keep
an eye on the Raritan and Passaic basins. At this time, none of
our river flood forecast points are expected to flood, but a
couple are close. If rain over performs and the two basins see
2.00+ inches versus 1.50 inches, some minor river flooding
becomes possible.

Tuesday and Wednesday storm...A powerful storm system with a
deep moisture plume from the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic and
even connected to the western Caribbean will impact our area.
Widespread heavy rainfall of 2-3 inches is probable (4 inches
possible) with the potential for moderate to major flooding on
some of our rivers later Tuesday and Wednesday. The heaviest
rain looks to occur Tuesday night. Tidal areas may also
experience higher levels during high tides due to excessive
runoff.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Some minor coastal flooding is likely along portions of Atlantic
coastal NJ tonight into Sunday, then a potentially widespread and
significant coastal flooding event may unfold Tuesday and Wednesday.
Coastal interests are urged to keep updated on the latest forecasts
and messaging, especially for next week's storm.

Today into Sunday...A strengthening onshore flow will peak tonight.
For areas off the coast of northern NJ this will be aligned fairly
close to the time of high tide overnight. For this reason, we're
thinking minor flooding will likely be a bit more widespread than
earlier forecasts so we've expanded the Coastal Flood Advisory to
include Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. The Coastal Flood
Advisory also remains in effect for Ocean County where flooding
is especially likely to be an issue in the backbays of Barnegat
Bay. Spotty minor flooding will also be possible farther south
along the remainder of the New Jersey Atlantic coast.

Tuesday and Wednesday...A powerful storm system will impact the
region. An intense southeasterly wind field will coincide with the
New Moon on Thursday (January 11th). As a result, coastal flooding
is probable and potentially significant and widespread. Excessive
runoff may significantly enhance the flooding especially if timed
with the high tides.

At 826 PM EST, an area of heavy snow was reported over the northern
Lehigh Valley, southern Poconos and northern New Jersey. Snowfall
rates of 1 to 3.5 inches per hour have been reported. Periods of
heavy snowfall will continue for the next few hours, with 1 to 3
inch per hour rates possible.

Locations impacted include...
Easton, Newton, Lehighton, Montague, Mount Pocono, Bethlehem,
Hopatcong, Forks, Northampton, East Stroudsburg, Hackettstown,
Tobyhanna, Wilson, Washington, Blairstown, Nazareth, Palmerton,
Bangor, Mount Arlington, and Franklin.

This includes the following highways...
 Northeast Extension between mile markers 66 and 97.
 Interstate 78 in Pennsylvania between mile markers 73 and 76.
 Interstate 78 in New Jersey between mile markers 0 and 5.
 Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania between mile markers 278 and 314.
 Interstate 80 in New Jersey between mile markers 0 and 29.
 Interstate 380 in Pennsylvania between mile markers 0 and 13.

Icy roads are likely with periods of visibility down to as low as
