.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure remains to the south and west of our region while
low pressure crosses north of the area today. A cold front attached
to the low will move across the Middle Atlantic region this afternoon.
High pressure builds back in for Thursday and most of Friday. Low
pressure develops over the Southeast US on Friday leading to unsettled
weather over the weekend. High pressure is expected to return by
early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Concern has grown for the possibility of a few snow squalls
across the Poconos this afternoon and into the early evening.
A band of snow showers are developing across north central PA
and moving eastward along and just ahead of a cold front. Latest
high-resolution guidance has increased the possibility for quick
bursts of snow this afternoon, mainly for the Poconos, though
some higher elevations across north Jersey may be impacted
briefly as well.
Otherwise, surface high pressure over the Gulf Coast and
Southeast will slide off the Southeast Coast later today through
tonight. Meanwhile, low pressure tracking across southern
Canada will drag a cold front through the region later this
afternoon through tonight. An upper trough with a closed upper
low and strong shortwave energy will dip into upstate New York,
and a weak secondary low will develop over central New York and
northern Pennsylvania.
With southwest flow ahead of the cold front, warm air advection
will be underway, and highs will be some 5 to 10 degrees to 10
to 15 degrees warmer than they were on Tuesday. Some showers are
possible with the passage of that secondary low, mainly for
areas north and west of the I-95 corridor, and especially for
north of I-78. Temperatures may drop enough for some snow
showers in the southern Poconos with minimal snow accumulation.
Elsewhere, any precip will be rain. Showers taper off fairly
quickly this evening.
A tight westerly pressure gradient develops by this afternoon,
with winds ranging from 15 to 20 mph with 25 to 35 mph gusts,
and a few peak gusts to 40 mph are possible as well. Winds shift
to the northwest tonight, and remain strong. Cold air advection
will be underway with lows tonight in the 20s to low 30s, and
in the teens in the southern Poconos. Wind chills will be in the
teens and low 20s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Cool and dry weather during most of the short term. Too dry
Thursday with winds and relative humidity levels close to Red
Flag criteria. We'll continue to coordinate any SPS/flags with
partners later today. Highs well below normal Thu with 40s most
spots and 30s for the Poconos and north NJ. Gusty winds 20 to 30
mph at times. Slightly milder Fri with increasing clouds. Upper
40s/low 50s for highs on Friday.
Rains arrive across the area Friday night as weak low pressure
advances up the Ohio Valley and into wrn PA. Temperatures will
be warm enough for rain across most areas except possibly
Carbon/Monroe counties PA and Sussex County NJ. We'll offer
rain/snow wording and include some low-end accums (One inch) for
the highest elevations. Some degree of uncertainty with regards
to any possible accums attm. The very dry air preceding the
storm bodes well for cooler temps and wet-bulb effects. Lows Fri
night low 30s for the NW areas and mid 30s to low 40s
elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
By Saturday morning, the weak low across Pennsylvania will have
dissipated while the low moving up the coast takes over. Steady
rains across the entire area by day and then tapering off from
west to east Sat night. Heavy rains are possible along the
Delmarva and srn NJ with the most OP models offering 2.0 to 2.5
inches in these areas. A Day4 Excessive rainfall outlook has
been issued by WPC. Categorical pops in the fcst and the only
place where some light snow may linger (from Fri night) is
across the higher elevations of the southern Poconos where snow
may occur before changing to rain. A raw North to Northeast wind
increasing to 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph expected.
Greater uncertainties with the long term reside with the Sunday
and Monday periods. Some of the global models from 12Z/19th
were keeping low pressure lingering offshore and sending rains
back across the Middle Atlantic region into Monday. The latest
guidance seems to be backing away from this somewhat. A ridge is
shown building down from the North, so we end up with a drier
period. For now, we'll continue advertising the low chance
(NJ/DE) for Sun with slight chance further inland. Mostly slight
chc pops for Monday. These are what the overnight NBM is
offering and looks reasonable at this point. It will continue to
be seasonably cool with highs Sun/Mon mostly upper 40s/low 50s
for the area. Slight chance pops and slightly below normal temps
expected for Tue.

evening, diminishing to 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt.

today, and then a Gale Warning for tonight. Gusts should
diminish below gales prior to daybreak Thursday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Delaware and the
eastern shores of Maryland to address the elevated fire weather
concerns through late this afternoon.
Low pressure passes north of the area, and a cold front passes
through the region late this afternoon and early this evening.
This will touch off some showers, mainly north and west of the
I-95 corridor. QPF will be minimal, but surface dew points will
rise into the upper 20s and low 30s this afternoon. Min RH
values this afternoon will range from 30 to 40 percent for areas
south and east of the I-95 corridor and across Delmarva, and
from 40 to 50 percent for the southern Poconos, Lehigh Valley,
and northern New Jersey. Southwest winds will increase to 15 to
20 mph with 25 to 35 mph gusts. A few peak gusts to 40 mph are
possible as well.
A colder and much dryer air mass will spread into the region
tonight with surface dew points dropping into the single digits
and low teens by daybreak Thursday. Max RH values will range
from 40 to 60 percent tonight.
Relative humidity recovery Wednesday night is anticipated to be
poor, with forecast maximum relative humidity values near
40-45% across much of the area. It will be fairly cold though,
with lows in the mid 20s to near 30 degrees. West to northwest
winds will remain elevated near 10-20 mph overnight as well.
Conditions are more concerning Thursday as dewpoints crash into
the teens and single digits. Resulting minimum relative
humidity values will be in the 20-25% range. Gusty west to
northwest winds will remain near 10-20 mph in most areas,
strongest farther north, with peak gusts around 25-30 mph
possible. These conditions will enhance fire spread potential.
Coordination with fire weather partners and possible
statements/flags will occur for Thursday.
