At 439 PM EDT, a dangerous snow squall was located over Penn Forest
Reservoir, or 9 miles northeast of Lehighton, moving east at 35 mph.
HAZARD...Intense bursts of heavy snow. Gusty winds leading to
blowing snow and rapidly falling visibility. Wind gusts

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will swing across the area through this evening,
followed by strong northwest flow through Thursday. Weak high
pressure moves into the region for Thursday night into Friday. An
area of low pressure will move northward along the east coast while
a cold front approaches from the west Friday night into Saturday,
bringing unsettled weather to the area. High pressure builds across
eastern Canada and far northern New England for Sunday into Monday,
while nosing its way down the east coast into the Mid Atlantic
region. This high will retreat early next week ahead of an
approaching storm system that may arrive around Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Snow squalls remain a concern across the Poconos for the next few
hours with higher elevations around northwestern NJ possibly getting
in the mix closer to sunset. Despite temperatures in the low 40s
earlier this afternoon, snow squalls have been able to provide
strong dynamic cooling across the Pocono Plateau, dropping
temperatures down into the low to mid 30s as a burst of snow arrived
with the squall. Traffic cameras along the I-80 corridor have shown
sudden drops in visibilities, making travel dangerous. The risk of
snow squalls causing reduced visibilities and gusty winds will
continue through sunset this evening.
Elsewhere, rain showers will push through this afternoon along with
a cold front associated with a low tracking across southern Canada.
Strong WSW winds ahead of the front will shift WNW, bringing a cold,
dry airmass behind it. Winds could gust as high as 20-30 mph at
times with stronger gusts possible in heavier showers. Most precip
will exit the region with the frontal boundary by sunset this
evening, though strong WNW winds could bring in an isolated light
snow shower or flurries to the Poconos tonight. Cold air advection
will be underway with lows tonight in the 20s to low 30s, and in the
teens in the southern Poconos. Wind chills will be in the teens and
low 20s with single digits in the Poconos.
We will stay rather cold and dry Thursday with temperatures around
10 degrees below climo with afternoon highs only making it into the
upper 30s to upper 40s (low 30s across the Pocono Plateau) and
relative humidity values in the 20-30% range. A strong pressure
gradient between our departing low across New England and a building
high from the west will result in gusty winds, 20 to 30 mph at
times, on top of very dry conditions, raising concerns for fire
weather risks. We will continue to coordinate any SPS/flags with
partners as needed. See Fire Weather section below for more
details.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Quiet weather is expected at the beginning of the short term period
from Thursday night into the daytime hours Friday. Weak high
pressure will affect the area Thursday night into Friday, which
should keep the weather dry. Temperatures during this period will
remain several degrees below normal.
By Friday evening and into the overnight hours, cloud cover will
increase across the area, while rain chances increase during the
overnight hours. As an area of low pressure lifts northward along
the eastern seaboard, a coastal trough will develop and lift across
the Mid Atlantic region overnight into Saturday morning. This will
allow the rainfall to spread from south to north, before the main
low itself moves toward the region during the day Saturday. As the
main low approaches, enhanced lift will spread across the area,
especially the coastal plain, which will lead to a period of heavier
rain; the most likely time period is between 10 am and 4 pm
Saturday. Rainfall will range between 1-3+ inches, with the highest
amounts expected across the coastal plain. This could lead to some
urban and poor drainage flooding, along with a few instances of
river and stream flooding.
By Saturday evening, the rainfall will be ending and the remainder
of the overnight Saturday period will remain dry.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The long term portion of the forecast is expected to start off
dry for Sunday and Monday as high pressure will be building
across eastern Canada and far northern New England, while nosing
its way southward into the Mid Atlantic region. Winds will be
out of the northeasterly direction for much of this period and
breezy, so there will likely be some clouds around and
temperatures will be within a few degrees of normal for much of
the area.
By Tuesday and Wednesday uncertainty in the forecast develops as the
high pressure begins to retreat as a weakening cold front begins to
approach the area from the west. With a couple of short
wave/vorticity impulses moving into the area within the southwest
flow aloft, scattered showers will be possible each day.

Tight pressure gradient this afternoon resulting in southwest
winds 15 to 20 kt with 25 to 30 kt gusts. A cold front passes
through the waters late afternoon and this evening, turning
winds northwest with gusts 35 to 40 kt for several hours
tonight. Seas build to 4 to 6 feet tonight.
Small Craft Advisory for all waters through the rest of the
afternoon for WSW winds, and then a Gale Warning for tonight for
strong WNW winds behind the cold front. Gusts should diminish
below gales prior to daybreak Thursday.
SCA gusts and seas linger through the afternoon on Thursday
before diminishing before sunset.

Thursday night-Friday night...Conditions are expected to remain
below advisory levels through much of Friday night, before
increasing late in the overnight.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A colder and much dryer air mass will spread into the region
tonight with surface dew points dropping into the single digits
and low teens by daybreak Thursday. Max RH values will range
from 40 to 60 percent tonight. It will be fairly cold though,
with lows in the mid 20s to near 30 degrees. West to northwest
winds will remain elevated near 10-20 mph overnight as well.
Conditions are more concerning Thursday as dewpoints crash into
the teens and single digits. Resulting minimum relative
humidity values will be in the 20-25% range. Gusty west to
northwest winds will remain near 10-20 mph in most areas,
strongest farther north, with peak gusts around 25-30 mph
possible. These conditions will enhance fire spread potential.
Coordination with fire weather partners and possible
statements/flags will occur for Thursday.

Snow squalls developing across north-central Pennsylvania this morning are expected to move eastward this afternoon into the early evening, potentially impacting the Poconos and high elevations of northwestern New Jersey, including areas along and north of the I-80 corridor. Snow squalls can quickly reduce visibilities to near zero rapid snow accumulations and blowing snow, making travel very dangerous at times, especially along interstate highways, including the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
