One more warm and calm day before active weather returns. Use
today to prepare for the widespread and impactful rainfall begins
alongside strong and gusty winds coming Wednesday. Nuisance
flooding concerns will be widespread with the midweek storm,
alongside rapid rises along creeks and streams. A few rivers may
reach monitor stage, with fewer reaching flood stage. Wind
advisories and warnings as well as a flood watch have been issued
for the mid-week. Scattered showers and light rain into the
weekend expected before the next widespread rainfall event begins
Sunday.

Currently mild and dry across the region with some lingering mist in
the North Bay and East Bay. Today will be the last warm and dry day
before an impactful atmospheric river makes its way into our area
tonight. Otherwise, forecast remains on track with no updates
anticipated at this time.

Another unseasonably warm day ahead with highs ranging from the
upper 50s and low 60s along the coast to the low 70s in the Santa
Clara and Salinas Valleys. Perfect time to clear out the gutters,
tie down the outdoor furniture and trash cans, check the batteries in
the weather radio, and make sure your go-bag is nicely stocked.
Today will be the last day of our pleasant stretch of weather,
because the next rain system arrives late tonight and into
Wednesday morning.

Winds turn south ahead of the rain band and become breezy this
evening. Gusts build into the night with dangerously strong winds
expected early Wednesday morning that will spread across the CWA
through the day.

Wednesday is the main event. The overnight forecast package made
slight adjustments to time of arrival and rainfall totals, with
the model trend showing a delayed start of the rain, but a
thinning of the main rain band, and a slightly quicker passage.
Rainfall amounts have been slightly reduced with these updates,
but flooding risks and overall rain impacts stay similar. The
overnight forecast team noted recent short-term model and ensemble
outputs and upped the peak wind forecast. As such, the Wind
Advisory has been expended across the CWA with a High Wind Warning
issued for the Santa Cruz and Santa Lucia mountain ranges.
Wednesday is looking as much of a wind event as it is a rain
event.

As of the most recent forecast update, the highest rain rates fall
in the North Bay Wednesday afternoon then the band spreads farther
south and east into the evening and late night. Rain rates reduce
into early Thursday but light showers and slight chances for storms
linger through that day.

Updated rainfall totals for Wednesday through Thursday:

1" to 2": Santa Clara Valley, Interior East Bay, interior Monterey
Co, San Benito Co

2" to 3": San Francisco, San Mateo Coast, Oakland, East Bay Hills,
San Mateo Co, lower elevations of Santa Cruz Co, southern portions
of the North Bay, Big Sur Coast

3 to 5": Santa Cruz Mtns, Northern and Coastal North Bay.

Above 5": The highest peaks of coastal Mtns

As per previous discussions, the main rainfall threat will urban and
small stream flooding as will as shallow mud/rock slides. Main
rivers will see increases during the event, but with rainfall
from smaller streams and higher slopes will tribute into them, the
threat of river flooding lasts beyond the rain system's passage.

Friday and Saturday see the potential for more showers activity, but
do not look to be impactful. Longer term models are starting to
agree on another rain event arriving Sunday into early next week,

Currently VFR across the region with mostly light winds. VFR lasts
through at least the morning of Wednesday for most terminals, though
mid to high level clouds will continue to fill into the region
throughout the TAF period as the next rain system approaches. KSTS
will see MVFR conditions develop in the late morning of Wednesday as
low clouds develop. Additionally, in the morning of Wednesday
southerly winds begin to strengthen, becoming gusty to around 25
knots by the late morning. LLWS will also be present in the morning
for North and SF bay terminals. Rain begins towards the end of the
TAF period for most terminals.

Vicinity of SFO...Mid level to high clouds will continue to build
into the region today, leading to overcast skies. At this moment,
VFR is thought to last through the end of the TAF period, though
confidence on this is only moderate. As rain begins in the morning
of Wednesday, low clouds may develop as CIGs lower. However,
confidence at this time is not high enough to include MVFR CIGs in
the TAF. This will be something to watch closely however. Strong and
gusty southerly winds will be something to contend with through the
last half of the TAF period, and likely beyond. Gusts up to 33
knots are expected.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Breezy drainage winds continue this morning
at KSNS but are expected to weaken and turn to become more northerly
into the afternoon today. High clouds will begin to push into the
region into the afternoon today, bringing overcast skies. CIGs will
slowly lower throughout the TAF period, though at this time remain
within VFR territory. Confidence on this is only moderate. Early
Wednesday morning, moderate southerly winds develop, with LLWS at
KSNS. Winds strengthen into the later morning to become strong and
gusty. Rain begins just shortly after the end of the TAF period.

A developing hurricane force low pressure system located near
41N144W is moving ENE towards the Pacific Northwest. An associated
cold front will approach the Bay Area over the next 36 hours.
Southerly winds ahead of the front are expected to build to gale
force across the exposed waters by Wednesday morning, with
isolated gusts to storm force possible. Seas will build through
the day Wednesday, becoming very rough by Thursday morning. Heavy
rain is also expected Wednesday and there is a chance for
thunderstorms. Winds will decrease Thursday, but seas will remain
rough through Saturday in a NW swell.
