alongside strong and gusty winds. Nuisance flooding concerns will
be widespread with the midweek storm, alongside rapid rises along
creeks and streams. A few rivers may reach monitor stage, with

have been issued for the Weds-Thurs timeframe. Scattered showers

More record high temperatures occurred today, what we lost in 850 mb
level mix down temperature to the ground in 24 hours (for example from
the Oakland upper air sounding data there was a net decrease 4 Celsius
by 4 pm today) we gained in sunlight today (more solar energy to enter
the atmosphere, warm the ground). Seven record highs occurred in our
forecast area today, all were in the Bay Area, details can be found
in today's record event report (RERMTR, WMO header SXUS76); temperatures
fell short of today's record highs at the Salinas Airport and King
City.
Satellite imagery shows what looks like a healthy frontal system
reaching our forecast area, the back edge of clouds extending approx
400 miles out over the eastern Pacific. There's good model agreement
that this system is in ongoing weakening mode, though one or two of
recent meso-scale models have been showing just a little bit of light
coastal drizzle prior to Wednesday's heavy rain and wind. For details

Looking around the region at this hour, temperatures are just
beginning to reach into the low 70s for interior locations. High
temperatures today will be in the mid to upper 70s for the interior,
and upper 60s along the coast and bay shorelines. Overall, a nice
day with above normal temperatures making it briefly feel a little
like spring. Tuesday, temperatures begin to lower, with most
locations seeing mid to upper 60s as a high, with just portions of
the Santa Clara Valley and Salinas valley seeing low 70s. Enjoy the

While the warm and sunny weather was nice while it lasted, get ready
for a return to wet and windy conditions come the midweek. Starting
late Tuesday night in the North Bay, rain begins to fall as our next
area of widespread rainfall approaches the coast. An area of low
pressure will approach the coast, bringing largescale lift and along
with it, a decent tap into tropical moisture. Models indicate PWATs
(Precipitable water - the amount of moisture that a column of air is
carrying, and the relative depth if all the moisture were to be
precipitated in the form of rain) of about 1.4" for the North Bay,
and closer to 1-1.25" for areas further south near the late
afternoon of Wednesday. Compared to KOAK sounding climatology for
the same time, these PWAT values exceed the 90th percentile. That
being said - a pretty moist airmass headed our way! Looking at
timing, the main core of the moderate to heavy rainfall will be
Wednesday morning into Thursday morning. Over this time period,
rainfall totals for the North Bay will be in the 3-5" range, with
amounts of 6-8" possible for the favored peaks of the North Bay
coastal mountains. Further south, the coastal mountains including
those in Santa Cruz and the Santa Lucias could see 4-6", and
generally 1.5-2.5" elsewhere. WPC has issued a Day 3 "Slight" ERO
for the North Bay and extending through the Big Sur coastline. For
the remainder of the CWA, a Day 3 ERO MRGL risk has been issued.
Taking this all into account, a flood watch has been issued for the
entirety of the CWA from late Tuesday night through late Thursday
night.
Taking a glance at rain rates, for the most part, rain rates appear
to be in the 0.25-0.35" per hour range. In higher elevations such as
ridges and mountain peaks, rain rates of about 0.5" per hour are not
out of the question. Given these large rain totals and rain rates,
there will be a risk for flooding impacts as well as shallow
landslides. As rain continues to fall, soils will become
increasingly wet, to the point of saturation at which runoff will
occur. This increased runoff will lead to rises in water levels of
creeks and streams throughout the CWA, as well as some rivers. A few
rivers are forecast to reach monitor stage come Thursday, namely
those in Sonoma and Santa Cruz counties. The Russian River near
Guerneville has around a 25% chance of reaching flood stage come
Thursday. Looking at the San Lorenzo River for the same time period,
there is around a 25% chance of reaching at least monitor stage.
But the rain and hydrologic concerns are not all, taking a look at
850mb winds, models suggest enhanced southerly flow near the
coastlines. This will translate into strong and gusty winds over our
region, predominantly the immediate coastline and the coastal
mountains. Southerly winds and gusts up to 35 mph will be likely at
the immediate coast, with gusts up to 50-60 mph at mountain peaks
and ridges. A wind advisory has been issued as a result for the
immediate coast and coastal mountains, including the Gabilan range,
for Wednesday 7 AM through Thursday 4 AM. With the combination of
saturated soils and strong winds, trees and power lines down are to
be expected, leading to potential power outages and blocked
roadways. You can think of saturated soil like oatmeal: its loose
and not going to anchor or hold already weakened trees very well,
all it takes is a little push to knock them over.
Looking beyond Wednesday and Thursday, showers become much more
scattered and light into the weekend. Friday and Saturday mornings,
chilly low temperatures for the interior portions of the CWA are
supported, with lows potentially in the mid to low 30s. Another
round of widespread, but light to moderate rainfall arrives Sunday
into Monday. As this event comes closer, more detail will be
available.
A lot to digest in this update, but if nothing else, please remember
these safety tips:
-If you encounter a flooded roadway, Turn Around Don't Drown! It
only takes a few inches of moving water to move a person, and just
12 inches to move a vehicle.
-Stay away from rivers and creeks that reaching bankfull. Water can
easily sweep away a person or pets.
-Clear storm drains and rain gutters of any dirt, leaves, and debris
to allow runoff to drain properly and hopefully prevent nuisance
flooding. (While its warm and sunny, might be a good time to
consider doing this!)
-Do not go near downed power lines or drive over them if down in the
roadway. Your risk electrocution if doing so!
-Tuck away and secure any loose outdoor items that can easily be
blown away or down in wind. Consider removing or trimming any
dead tree branches that could fall.

VFR continues but the North Bay and parts of the East Bay is
experiencing lower visibilities. Expect North Bay and Monterey Bay
to experience IFR-LIFR conditions overnight into the morning, where
VFR will return between 16-18Z. Otherwise, expect VFR to prevail
through the TAF period for the remaining terminals. Lower confidence
for that KLVK will experience MVFR conditions, but due to
persistence forecast, a TEMPO was placed in the TAFs. Light winds
will become more notable as they will start to turn predominately
southerly and will increase towards Tuesday night as the front moves
over the region.
Vicinity of SFO...VFR continues to prevail through the TAF period.
Wind will remain relatively light until Tuesday afternoon where
southerly winds will start to increase up to 11-12 knots. Winds will
continue to increase as the front moves closer to the terminal.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with uncertainty on timing of MVFR-IFR
conditions. Models suggest cigs and vis will lower between 09-11Z
and last until 16-17Z. Winds will remain relatively light to
moderate through the TAF period.

southerly as the low pressure system moves over the waters. Gusty
winds will become gale force on Wednesday over much of the waters.
Moderate to heavy rain will be widespread across the waters
Wednesday and Thursday, but becomes lighter into the weekend as
chances diminish. Moderate period westerly swell persists through
the middle of the work week. A new, moderate period, NW swell
train moves into the waters starting late week creating 14-17 feet
waves.
