.KEY MESSAGES...

- Delayed start of eastern half of Winter Weather Advisory due
  to slower trend to snow. Total snow of 1 to 4 inches with
  locally higher amounts remain possible today through early
  Friday.

- Wind Chill Advisory expanded to include Western Cherry,
  Hooker, and Logan Counties for Friday morning. All of central
  and north central Nebraska Wind Chill Advisory remains
  unchanged other than to extend through the afternoon Friday.

- Wind Chill Warning replaces previous Watch for entire forecast area,
  valid Friday evening through Tuesday morning (90 hours
  consecutive for all zones).

- After a light snow event Thursday into Friday, dangerous cold
  arrives for Friday night into early next week. Near record
  temperatures and gusty winds will promote very dangerous wind
  chill values of negative 30 to negative 50 degrees.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Active wintry weather impacts much of the region beginning early
Thursday morning. Aloft, low-amplitude troughing continues to swing
through the Four Corners region into the southern Rockies. Greatest
upper-level dynamics will likely remain well south of the forecast
area. Further north, deep troughing anchored across
Alberta/Saskatchewan overtop an arctic high will foster cold air
infiltration south into CONUS over the next 12 to 36 hours. This
will provide the cold air for precipitation chances through the
forecast period. Enhanced upper-level flow will lead to the
formation of a lee low across northeast Colorado this morning.
Increasing upper-level divergence across the southern Plains ahead
of the upper-level trough will carry this surface low further south
through midday as it hugs closely to the baroclinic zone ahead of a
southward tracking cold front. As the shallow cold air in the wake
of this front shifts south, warm air will lift overtop which will
help drive an area of snow developing initially across the Panhandle
but tracking east and southeast through the day today. Leaned
heavily on SREF/HREF and individual CAMs for timing and placement of
greatest PoPs through the day. This places definite PoPs (> 75%)
across northern Sheridan County shortly after sunrise and this
"bullseye" following the Highway 20 corridor west to east before
exiting by late evening. Further south, greater uncertainty exists.
Agree with decision by previous shift to remove counties from the
southern fringes of the Winter Weather Advisory. Have kept PoPs
south of Highway 92 limited to Chance categories (< 50%) as NBM 50th
percentile values for 24 hour QPF top out at a few hundreths with
25th percentile values keeping areas along and south of Interstate
80 dry. HREF probabilities of > 0.05" drop off considerable across
the southern half of the forecast area outside of a local maximum
immediately south of the Platte River which is likely attributable
to northerly winds climbing out of the valley helping to drive some
snow development. Ignoring this, and everything south of Highway 92
is less than 50% and even less than 20% for south of Interstate 80
for the aforementioned parameter. Did consider trimming more
counties from the Advisory but opted to keep things as is for now
and allow Day shift to determine need to remove as necessary. Given
fairly broad but steady low to mid-level lift, believe coverage of
snow will remain steady through the day. Forecast soundings are
fairly impressive showing a deep, saturated dendritic growth zone
with raw model guidance suggesting snow to liquid ratios (SLRs)
exceeding 20:1 and potentially as high as 25:1. Will generally cap
SLRs at 20:1 with these values peaking late Thursday afternoon
through early Friday. Latest WPC QPF keeps values exceeding 0.1"
limited to the northern Sandhills through north central Nebraska
with 0.05" or less for the southern Panhandle into southwest
Nebraska. With these values and forecast SLRs, total snow amounts of
1 to 4 inches are likely in the Advisory area with locally heavier
amounts possible generally east of Highway 11. Snow will likely exit
west to east late tonight through early Friday morning. Trimming of
the backside of the Winter Weather Advisory will likely be needed
but will defer these decisions to later forecasts.

Thursday will be the first cold day of the stretch with daytime
temperatures likely following a non-diurnal trend for much of the
area. Daytime temperatures will peak in the upper teens to single
digits south to north. With surface low to the south and approaching
high pressure in the north, expecting breezy conditions through the
day. This will further complicate travel with blowing snow concerns.
In addition to this, with the falling temperatures, wind chills will
fall to the zero to negative 10 degF range across the area. While
not quite advisory criteria with these values, folks needing to be
outdoors for any period of time should take adequate precautions.
Temperatures will quickly fall Thursday night into Friday morning
with sub-zero lows and wind chills will fall below negative 20 degF.
As such, the inherited Wind Chill Advisory going into effect at 12am
CST Friday looks to remain on track. Did opt to extend it through
6pm CST Friday to remove the 6 hour period between the Wind Chill
Advisory and new Wind Chill Warning. This allows a seamless
transition between headlines. With daytime temperatures ranging from
around zero degF to 15 degF in the far southwest combined with
afternoon winds out of the north in the 10 to 20 mph range, daytime
wind chill maximums will still remain in the negative teens and
twenties so Advisory criteria is expected to linger through the day.
Felt this was easy justification for the extension to the
Advisory.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

ECWMF Extreme Forecast Index values continue to highlight near
certain negative cold anomalies exceeding model climatology each day
beginning Saturday and lasting through Tuesday. This magnitude of
cold outbreak is likely to rival some of the coldest in recent years
(similar to January 2023 and February 2021 cold snaps). Greatest
concern of the forecast period focuses on the incoming cold.

Wind Chill Warnings begin Friday evening across the entirety of
western and central Nebraska. Temperatures plunge Friday night with
forecast lows in the negative teens for most locations as
reinforcing cold air arrives behind a secondary cold front. With
rapid pressure rises behind this feature, expecting persistent gusts
through the overnight. Widespread negative 30 to negative 40 degF
wind chills are forecast for Saturday morning and values nearing
negative 50 degF are likely for portions of the northern Sandhills.
These values will be extremely dangerous to be out in. Enhanced
caution is advised to folks traveling in these conditions or folks
that require to be out in these for periods of time for work. Frost
bite can develop in as little as 5 minutes, so plan accordingly to
protect yourself. Daytime temperatures won't improve much with highs
only in the five above to negative 10 degF range. Stronger north to
northwesterly winds of 10 to 20 gusting 30 to 40 mph will keep wind
chill maximums well below negative ten degF and closer to negative
30 degF, even during the daytime. Another round of light snow will
develop as the surge of cold air clears the area. For now,
confidence in snow accumulations is highest in our far west and
southwest zones. Ensemble/NBM probabilities are quite limited with
respect to QPF so inherited WPC QPF of only a few hundredths seems
reasonable. This translates to all snowfall amounts remaining less
than one inch.

Heading into next week, little in the way of improvement is
expected. The latest forecast calls for a near carbon copy Sunday as
seen Saturday as dangerous cold air temperatures materialize
overnight, linger into the day, and wind chills fall to around
negative 30 to negative 50 degF across the area. NBM probabilities
hint at a modest temperature increase across southwest Nebraska as
potential for MaxT remaining below 0 degF is about a 50/50 shot but
remains higher across the Sandhills into north central Nebraska.
With widespread sub-zero lows Sunday night into Monday, the last of
the brutal cold mornings appears to be lining up for Monday. The
entire area looks to fully support Wind Chill Warnings for now.
EPS/GEFS ensemble means show a notable increase in temperatures by
Tuesday though with highs climbing above zero and the last of the
sub-zero mornings lows. So it does appear likely that the area will
be pulled out of the metaphorical deep freeze by Tuesday. This is
likely as the main surface high pressure settles south of the region
with westerly downsloping flow on the northerly periphery of that
feature. This will drive more mild air in from the Great
Basin/Central Rockies.

The extended outlook beyond the middle of next week appears to be
fairly uncertain with high spread denoted by high standard deviation
values within ensemble guidance. To differing extents, both
GFS/ECWMF and their respective ensemble suites show another strong
Canadian high pressure settling into the northern Plains. How quick
this shifts south and whether the local area sees a direct impact or
just a glancing blow remains somewhat uncertain. So though the
extended forecast shows near seasonable temperatures, confidence in
these values remains low at this time so folks should continue to
monitor later forecasts to keep up-to-date on the potential towards
the end of the month.

terminals, with IFR/locally LIFR CIGs and visibilities
anticipated. The lowered categories will persist into tonight,
before snow gradually exits the area and a brief return to MVFR
is possible for western and southwest Nebraska terminals.
Additional low stratus will drop into the area from north to
south tomorrow morning, with a return to IFR into the afternoon
possible.

Winds remain gusty from the north through today, with gusts of
20 to 25 kts expected. Winds gradually weaken this evening and
tonight, remaining northerly at 10 to 15 kts.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and north
central Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

Snow will continue to overspread the Sandhills today through
tonight, resulting in light accumulations generally near and north of
Highway 2. Gusty winds may also contribute to blowing snow,
especially in open areas. Be prepared for slick roads and reduced
visibility. Wind chill values will also drop as low as -25 overnight
across north central Nebraska.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Brutal cold sets in Friday night and continues through Tuesday
morning across the forecast area. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect
due to values dropping as low as -50 in northern Nebraska and -35 in
southern Nebraska. Frostbite will be possible in as little as 5 to 10
minutes for exposed skin over the weekend.

Additional snow chances exist essentially each day through Monday.
Minor accumulations or a dusting will be possible Friday night into
Saturday.
