.KEY MESSAGES...

- Snow tomorrow into tomorrow night with potential for several
inches of accumulation mainly north of Highway 2.

- A significant outbreak of arctic air arrives tomorrow night
and intensifies through the weekend with bitterly cold
temperatures and dangerous wind chills thorugh.

- Periods of light snow with potential for minor accumulations

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 400 PM CST Wed Jan 10 2024

After a fast moving clipper system brought a fresh coating of
snow to locations east of Highway 83 and north of Highway 2 this
morning, clearing skies allowed temperatures to warm nicely
across central and western Nebraska. Late afternoon readings
were in the lower 40s southwest to middle 30s northeast. However
a strong arctic front is lurking just off to our north and the
departing clipper will pull the front down into Nebraska
tonight. The cold air will gradually filter down and by daybreak
Thursday temperatures will be in the single digits up around
the Highway 20 corridor but in the teens down toward Interstate
80.

An upper trof digging over the Rockies will develop a strong
surface low over the southern Plains that will move into the
Mississippi valley by tomorrow night. Dynamic interaction
between the arctic front and the developing low will bring a
good amount of mid level FGEN forcing and deformation across
Nebraska. The airmass is dry by there will be enough moisture
around to spread some snow across northern Nebraska from west
to east tonight through tomorrow. Short range ensemble guidance
has trended notably further to the northeast with QPF and the
50th percentile for 2 inches of more of snow accumulation now
resides generally along and north of Highway 2 where a Winter
Weather Advisory is in effect. Any snow accumulations further
to the southwest will be lighter, so given this new guidance
have trimmed our Winter Weather Advisory and removed Keith,
Lincoln, and Frontier counties. Any lingering snow will be
moving off to our east later Thursday night. Temperatures
tomorrow will generally be steady to slowly falling through the
teens and single digits, then continue falling Thursday night
with readings by daybreak Friday ranging from close to 10 below
zero around the Highway 20 corridor to just about 5 above zero
south of Interstate 80. A Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect
east of Highway 83 tomorrow night as wind chills will be in the
-15 to -25 range by daybreak Friday.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Issued at 400 PM CST Wed Jan 10 2024

As the storm moving into the Mississippi valley deepens, strong
northerly winds on the backside of the low will usher in the
core of the coldest air starting Friday. Ensemble guidance has
been very consistent for several days showing temperatures
aloft approaching minimum percentiles and EFI/SoT guidance
shows a very robust signal for significant cold. Probabilistic
guidance also shows 50th percentile guidance for winds of 25 to
35mph Friday through Sunday that will generate very dangerously
low wind chill values. This frigid set up will result in *highs*
thorugh the weekend ranging from 5 to 10 below zero north to 0
to 5 above south. Lows Friday night through Sunday night will
generally be 15 to 25 below zero north, 5 to 15 below zero south.
A Wind Chill Watch remains in effect Friday night through Monday
night as winds chills Friday night of -20 to -35, will go as
low as -30 to -45 through the weekend. Temperatures and wind
chills this extreme will be very dangerous with frostbite
possible for exposed skin in just minutes, and rapid onset of
life threatening hypothermia is possible for anyone venturing
outdoors without proper clothing. There will be some potential
for light snow across southwest Nebraska mainly Saturday and
Sunday with some mid level forcing, but moisture in the cold air
is quite limited so probabilistic guidance is below 50 percent
for accumulations around 1 inch, and below 25 percent for 2
inches or more.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 1018 PM CST Wed Jan 10 2024

An Arctic cold front has begun to advance across the northern
half of the state of Nebraska and will sweep through the entire
area by 12Z. This frontal passage will result in ceilings
lowering down to MVFR/IFR ahead of snow moving in from the
northwest by Thursday afternoon, spreading southeast into
tonight. Northerly winds will strengthen behind the frontal
passage with gusts up to 25kts expected. These gusty winds
combined with light to moderate snowfall intensity will lead
reductions to visibility. Guidance has come into agreement that
portions of the northern Sandhills, including KVTN terminal,
has increased potential to see LIFR visibility restrictions
primarily after 15Z. Confidence on timing and visibility
restrictions is meager for areas south of Highway 2, including
KLBF terminal, thus, did include a TEMPO group from 19Z to 23Z.
Will rely heavily on radar and satellite trends for future TAF
issuances and amendments.
