Skies have just about cleared area wide, and valley temperatures
have fallen quickly as winds died down. It's clear that it will
be colder than originally forecast in valleys, and min temps have
been revised downward. However, it's uncertain how much mixing
will occur and when it will occur as low level flow just off the
ground increases during the night and potentially raises
temperatures. The updated forecast still calls for some rebound
before dawn, but confidence in the details is low.

Clearing is progressing quickly northeast across the area. This
was already expected, and this update is only an adjustment for
timing.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)
Issued at 459 PM EST WED JAN 10 2024

Key Messages:

* Temperatures return to above normal levels on Thursday with
  highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s.

Analysis and Discussion:

Satellite imagery shows an abundance of low clouds across eastern
Kentucky at 2130z. Surface weather stations are reporting
temperatures ranging in the 30s outside of the high terrain.
Finally, the latest surface analysis indicates surface ridging
extending northward from the Gulf of Mexico into the Lower Ohio
Valley. A potent but moisture-starved 500H shortwave trough is
found upstream over the Northern and Central Plains and is
followed by shortwave ridging over the Central Rockies.

Skies should trend mostly clear later this evening as high
pressure noses further into eastern Kentucky. The surface pressure
gradient then tightens again later in the night as the shortwave
trough brushes the Ohio Valley. There will also be a 40+ knot 850
mb warm conveyor belt jet feeding into the passing system. This
stronger gradient should keep boundary layer mixing going through
most of the night and a fraction of that momentum could mix down
at times leading to a bit of gustiness, especially over the
ridgetops and open terrain where southwesterly wind gusts may
approach 15 to 20 mph toward sunrise on Thursday.

The trough departs by midday Thursday, leaving behind slacking
winds as high pressure ridging once again noses back into the
Commonwealth. With nearly full sunshine and 850 mb temperatures
moderating above 0C, expect a mild afternoon with highs generally
in the upper 40s north of I-64 to the mid 50s near the Tennessee
border. A much more significant storm system approaches Thursday
night with increasing cloud cover and possibly a stray shower
chance towards dawn on Friday. Anticipate temperatures quickly
falling off in the upper 20s to mid 30s Thursday evening before
the thicker clouds arrive.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

*Rain moves into the area with a near 100 percent chance of rain
 on Friday.

*There is a marginal risk for severe weather at 5 percent per SPC
 Friday afternoon.

*Gusty winds are likely, with a 70 to 90 percent chance of
 greater than or equal to 40 mph wind gusts Friday afternoon into
 Saturday.

*Very light snow on the back side of this system of a trace to
 perhaps a few tenths Friday night into Saturday.

*The next strong storm system comes in the first part of next
 week, bringing potential for accumulating snow late Sunday into
 Tuesday.

*An arctic mass will settle in behind the second system, with
 high temperatures remaining well below freezing and low
 temperatures in the single digits from Monday night through
 Tuesday night.

Well, hold on to your hats, because the long-term forecast
presents an active and amplified pattern across much of the
eastern half of the lower 48, including the Lower Ohio Valley. We
start the period warm, with highs surging into the low to mid-50s
ahead of the deepening low and negatively tilting mid-level trough
axis on Friday. This as a coupled jet streak structure develops
aloft at the 300mb level to encourage further deepening of this
low pressure. This low will track north and east toward the Great
Lakes region through the day on Friday. This will eventually send
a cold front, or perhaps an occluding front, across the area on
Friday. Given its more occluded nature, we will not see much, if
any, instability, making it poleward toward the Lower Ohio Valley.
This leads to uncertainty if we can actually realize much if any
severe weather, but even so, gusty showers would be possible given
the strong low-level jet response, with an 850mb jet of 60 to 70
knots pushing through the area Friday afternoon. The strong wind
potential will remain a concern Friday afternoon into Saturday
morning, with around a 70 to 90 percent chance of wind gusts in
excess of 40 mph per the NBM. However, the NBM can be overdone on
wind potential at times, so this will have to be looked at closer
over the next several forecast cycles. Cold air will dive
southward into the area behind this front and could lead to some
very light snow accumulations of perhaps a dusting to a few tenths
on Saturday. This will have a lower impact, with WSSI-P showing
generally less than a 10 percent chance of impacts from this push
of very light snow.

There will be a brief lull in the weather Saturday afternoon into
Sunday afternoon before yet another storm system arrives Sunday
night into Tuesday. There remains a fair amount of uncertainty
with this system, as the various ensembles and deterministic
models are showing timing and location differences. However, there
are increasing probabilities for accumulating snow Sunday night
into Tuesday, and the WSSI-P is showing probabilities of 20 to 50
percent of seeing minor impacts from this event. The EFI is also
interesting in that it shows uncertainty for snow by only showing
a 0.5 to 0.6 signal, but the shift of tails of around 0 to 1
indicates that if something does occur, it could be the 99th
percentile for that re-forecast period. Then, guidance is also
showing a strong signal for an arctic airmass arriving in the wake
of this storm system. This would lead to some of the coldest air
of the season so far for most, with single-digit lows and highs in
the teens possible. However, as stated earlier, the issue comes
down to timing and when that surge of cold air arrives, with NBM
showing large spreads in the temperatures by Monday and Tuesday.
The weather then becomes quiet for Tuesday night into Wednesday,
and some timing issues lead to uncertainty in this area of the
forecast too. The concern would be that Tuesday night could be
quite a bit colder (possibly below zero) in the valleys if high
pressure moves overhead and snowfall is on the ground, but for now
we will keep it in the single digits and teens.

the surface will increase through the first few hours of the

period. Surface winds will generally remain less than 10 kts,
with a southwesterly component overall.
