Issued at 720 PM EST Mon Jan 15 2024 No changes to the Winter Headlines issued for wintry precipitation. A Wind Chill Advisory will be issued for Tuesday evening and overnight. Weak frontal boundary is situated across northern portions of Georgia this evening. Low pressure has developed across SE AL this evening. This low will NE tonight and then offshore the Carolinas by early tomorrow morning. Strong high pressure will begin to build in from the NW. Very cold air is on the back side of the front, with temperatures in the teens across much of TN this evening. An area of precipitation on the north side of the frontal boundary will slowly move south across GA overnight and into early Tuesday morning. Temperatures have started to drop below freezing in the far NW corner of the state, but have lagged earlier model guidance. Have adjusted the hourly temperatures a few degrees upwards for the next couple of hours. Mins did not change much in most areas, however as you get into the Metro Area, it will be a race between the freezing temperatures and the exiting moisture. The closer to the heart of ATL (perimeter), the less confidence there is for FZRA. However, there remains good potential in the west and northwest suburbs. Will not make any changes to the Winter Storm Warning/Advisory for the wintry precipitation tonight. Even near freezing temperatures combined with any moisture can cause slick spots on bridges and overpasses. However, will go ahead and issue a Wind Chill Advisory for much of north and central GA for tomorrow evening and overnight. High confidence with the NW winds 5 to 15 mph, wind chills between 5 above and 9 below will be possible. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Tuesday) Issued at 237 PM EST Mon Jan 15 2024 Key Messages: - A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 7 AM Tuesday. Storm totals of up to two inches of snow are possible in NW Georgia with over a tenth of an inch of ice in the same area. - A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of N Georgia for snow totals of less than an inch and a glaze of ice. - A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect generally from Carrollton to Cumming including portions of the Atlanta Metro Area from 4 AM until noon Tuesday for a patchy light glaze of ice. - Cold temperatures on the backside of the system will likely bring wind chill values into the single digits late Tuesday afternoon and night. Ongoing winter weather forecast remains generally on track. A nose of relatively warmer air centered around 800 mb (several degrees C) and colder air at the surface (initially because of diurnal cooling, then cold air advection) will lead to a greater threat of freezing rain as well progress through the night. QPF values remain light, so only .01-.02" of ice are expected, but even those amounts pose a danger to motorists. Have also expanded the Winter Weather Advisory SE into portions of the Atlanta Metro Area. Locations in this expanded advisory are only expected to receive between a trace and .01" of ice. Additionally, the threat will be a narrow time window between when surface temperatures drop below freezing and the back edge of the departing precipitation area. The advisory expansion lasts from 09Z until 17Z (bookended by an hour or two to account for uncertainty). Some very light freezing rain may occur in patches a bit farther S toward Coweta, Heard, and Troup counties Tuesday morning, but uncertainty is high and areal coverage is expected to be low. Cold air will continue to rush into the area through the day Tuesday, with max temperatures in the mid 20s in the NW, with highs struggling to rise above freezing in the Atlanta Metro Area. High temperatures across the SE will rise just above 50. Tuesday night is expected to be the coldest night, with overnight lows ranging from the single digits over the NW zones to the mid 20s across the extreme SE zones. NW winds will continue to blow near 15 mph sustained with gusts over 20 mph (particularly in Tuesday evening). Will likely be hoisting a Wind Chill Advisory later today or early Tuesday morning. /SEC && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday morning through next Sunday) Issued at 237 PM EST Mon Jan 15 2024 Key Messages: - Dangerously low wind chills expected early Wednesday morning - Rain showers expected Thursday evening through early Friday morning with the possibility of a wintry mix across portions of north GA - Another round of dangerously cold conditions is likely this coming weekend - Fire weather concerns expected during the dry periods of the long term forecast Aside from the very cold conditions expected on Wednesday morning, will need to monitor fire weather conditions during the day as relative humidity is forecast to plummet into the low- to mid-20 percent range. Will need to keep an eye on fuel moistures and drying trends following the light rainfall that occurs in the short term period. Will also need to monitor fire weather conditions on Thursday as minimum relative humidity is forecasted to range from 20% to 30% across much of the forecast area with the lowest values across north-central and northeast Georgia. While still cool, Thursday is expected to be warmer than Wednesday. Ensemble guidance depicts a shortwave trough zipping over the OH Valley and Mid-Atlantic Thursday evening through Friday. At the surface, an area of low pressure will traverse the Southeast, bringing a quick push of rain showers across the forecast area primarily Thursday night through Friday morning. Portions of far north GA (especially the mountains) could have a wintry mix during the overnight and early morning hours, which could result in a dusting of snow. There remains much uncertainty regarding temperature and moisture profiles at four to five days out. After the precip comes to an end on Friday morning, breezy conditions will set in with northwest winds of 10-20 mph and gusts of 20-30 mph, signaling the approach of another push of Arctic air. High pressure and strong CAA will surge across the forecast area in the wake of the aforementioned quick-hitting system, so expect to have dangerous wind chills late Friday night into Saturday morning and late Saturday night into Sunday morning. The lowest wind chills will be felt late Friday night into Saturday morning with values ranging from -10 to 5 degrees along and north of a line from West Point to Eatonton to Athens. Still, both overnight/early morning periods will very likely require Wind Chill Advisories for portions of the forecast area. Across central Georgia, wind chills during both periods are expected to be in the single digits to 15 degrees. Given the very dry, continental airmass in place through the weekend, will need to monitor fire weather conditions. Martin && .AVIATION...
