.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure will lift through Quebec tonight and into
James Bay Sunday. This will leave a trough across the Great
Lakes through early next week, but surface ridging will attempt
to build into the Ohio Valley Monday before another trough drops
into the Great Lakes by mid week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Strong 983 mb surface low pressure centered in eastern Ontario this
afternoon will continue to slowly fill and lift into Quebec tonight
and the vicinity of James Bay Sunday. This storm system will leave
behind very broad mid/upper troughing from the northern Plains
through the Great Lakes and NE U.S. as the vertically stacked
surface to mid-level low pinwheels over James Bay through Sunday
night. This pattern will lead to a broad cyclonic flow of deep
arctic air across the Great Lakes, with periodic shortwave
disturbances bringing light synoptic snows to the area, as well as
leading to subtle movements of lake-effect snow bands off Lake Erie.
Most of the lake-effect snow will stay over western NY and the
Buffalo area, but it will occasionally clip the lakeshore areas from
Lake County to northern Erie County PA, especially PA. The biggest
story will be the very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills,
coldest of the season so far. Below are some details regarding each
forecast element.
Winds: Since the surface storm is filling and pulling away, the
pressure gradient is relaxing across our region. At the same time,
winds in the 850-925 mb layer have decreased to around 45 knots and
will further decrease this evening as the best pressure rises
associated with a shortwave that moved through earlier today
continue to exit the region. Based on this, surface wind gusts
peaked early this afternoon and will continue to subside this
evening. Gusts across inland areas will be around 35-40 knots this
evening before subsiding further and will be 40-45 knots near the
lakeshore east of Cleveland but will take until early tonight to
subside. Based on this diminishing trend, downgraded all areas to a
Wind Advisory except for Erie County PA which will see the threat
for 50 knot gusts hold through the evening, so kept Erie County in a
High Wind Warning. The Wind Advisory will expire at 00Z for most of
the area, except it will expire at 06Z for Cuyahoga, Lake, and
Ashtabula Lakeshore Counties since the winds hold up longer there.
The High Wind Warning for Erie County PA will expire at 06Z as well.
Breezy conditions will continue late tonight and Sunday, but most
gusts will only be 25-35 knots, so the damaging winds will be over.
Snow: The light synoptic snow has mostly exited the region as of mid
afternoon with satellite and radar loops showing lake-effect bands
taking over off Lakes Michigan and Erie in a predominately westerly
flow. A 250 to 260 degree component to the boundary layer flow will
direct most of the Lake Erie activity into western NY and the
Buffalo area through Sunday night, but a period of slightly more
westerly flow this evening through the first half of tonight,
combined with a shortwave moving through tonight, could bring the
edge of the dominant band into the extreme lakeshore areas of
eastern Lake, Ashtabula, and northern Erie Counties. This is the
lowest confidence part of the forecast. Hi-res guidance, which
includes nearly all of the HREF members, are not initializing the
developing band over Lake Erie well at all this afternoon which
lowers confidence in its placement. Most members want to orient the
band west-east along I-90 from Ashtabula lakeshore to Erie PA from
mid evening through about 06Z before it lifts northward. Based on
surface wind plots and radar trajectories over the lake, believe
this is the typical south bias in play since we are already seeing
signs of the band curving northeastward. Still think it will snow
along the lakeshore for a few hours, especially near Erie County PA,
but the heaviest should stay offshore. Timing of the steadiest snow
in that area should be from now through 06 to 09Z before the band
lifts north ahead of the aforementioned shortwave crossing through
the region. Capped snow amounts in the 3 to 6 inch range for the
Erie County lakeshore now through tonight, with the greatest north
of I-90 and east of I-79, so the Winter Weather Advisory for the
Erie PA lakeshore through 09Z looks good. Amounts of 2 to 3 inches
are possible along the lakeshores of Lake and northern Ashtabula
Counties, but confidence is even lower there. Elsewhere, light snow
with the shortwave tonight will put down a trace to up to 1.5 inches
at most. Sunday and Sunday night will be mostly dry with SW boundary
layer flow, but kept slight chance to chance PoPs for a few flurries
or stray snow showers east of Cleveland through NW PA.
Cold and Wind Chills: As stated above, the coldest air of the season
is expected tonight through the remainder of the near term period
(and through the extended forecast). Low temperatures tonight will
dip into the single digits to low teens, with the coldest west of I-
71. Lows Sunday night will dip into the single digits areawide, with
some places near zero in interior portions of NW PA, NE OH, and NW
OH, as well as along the US 30 corridor. Highs will only reach the
low to mid teens Sunday and Monday, and parts of NW Ohio will stay
in the single digits for highs Sunday. This cold combined with wind
gusts of 25 to 35 knots tonight and 20-25 knots Sunday into Sunday
night will lead to dangerous wind chills. Wind chills will approach -
15 F west of I-71 tonight, so continued the Wind Chill Advisory
there, and these wind chills will not improve much Sunday which is
why it runs through 21Z. In fact, extensions are likely through
Sunday night. Areas east of I-71 will mostly see wind chills of -5
to -10 F, with the coldest Sunday night, but it will still be bad,
so we recommend that people limit time outdoors and dress in layers
if you need to be outside.

affect our CWA as a vertically-stacked and weakening low meanders in
a cyclonic manner from Hudson Bay to northeastern MB to Lake

Great Lakes, including our region. The cyclonic flow will be
associated with net low-level CAA and will allow an air mass of
Arctic origin to affect northern OH and NW PA. Daytime highs should
reach the teens on Monday and the upper single digits to upper teens
on Tuesday. Overnight lows should reach the single digits to lower
teens Monday night and mainly the single digits above 0F Tuesday
night. Scattered and periodic snow showers are possible, especially
Monday night into Tuesday as a stronger shortwave trough is preceded
by moist isentropic ascent aloft and accompanied by a surface trough
axis, along which low-level convergence and moist ascent will
contribute to precip generation. Lake-effect snow (LES), steady to
heavy at times, is expected to persist over and downwind of Lake
Erie and impact portions of western NY as mean low-level flow
remains SW'erly, low-level moisture on the synoptic scale remains
sufficient, and lake surface to 850 mb temperature differences over
~3C Lake Erie hover near 20C to 23C. The southern fringe of this LES
may brush the lakeshore on occasion from northeastern Cuyahoga
County to Erie County, PA. Any fresh snow accumulations through the
short-term period are expected to be a coating to two inches at most.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Cyclonic W'erly to N'erly flow aloft, embedded shortwave
disturbances, and net surface troughing should impact our region
during this period. However, a surface high projected to move E'ward
across the southeastern U.S. may extend a ridge into our region on
Wednesday. A cold air mass and below-normal temperatures will likely
persist. Periodic and scattered snow showers are possible, especially
Wednesday night through Friday night due to the aforementioned
shortwave disturbances and for the same reasons mentioned in the
short-term discussion. Sufficient low-level moisture on the synoptic
scale and favorable lake-induced thermodynamics should allow LES to
persist over/downwind of Lake Erie through the period. The LES should
shift S'ward into the primary snowbelt of NE OH and NW PA Wednesday
and especially Wednesday night as the mean low-level flow veers from
SW'erly to W'erly with a shortwave disturbance passage. The mean low-
level flow direction forecast becomes much less certain on Thursday
through Saturday due to large discrepancies in forecast model
solutions. However, during this time frame, transient LES should
impact areas primarily east through south of Lake Erie, which makes
sense climatologically.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
A large area of light snow showers will continue to gradually
exit eastward this afternoon. The snow showers should be done at
KTOL and KFDY by 20Z, but it will take until this evening at
KMFD. Farther east, snow showers will continue into tonight
bringing periods of IFR to occasionally LIFR visibilities in
the heaviest bursts of snow. There should be a break mid to late
evening with just flurries before a surface trough brings
another flare up of snow showers after 05Z tonight, with KCLE,
KCAK, KYNG, and KERI seeing the bulk of this. Visibilities will
again dip to IFR in the heaviest bursts. KERI will see the most
persistent IFR visibilities this afternoon through tonight due
to lake enhanced snow showers from Lake Erie. All sites will see
drier conditions Sunday morning, but MVFR cigs will remain
locked in place areawide across northern Ohio and NW PA.
WSW winds of 20-30 knots this afternoon will continue to gust to
40-50 knots at times, especially in NW Ohio and near the
lakeshore. The winds seem to have peaked already and will
gradually subside this afternoon and evening. WSW winds of
15-20 knots gusting to 30-35 knots are generally expected
tonight and Sunday, with the strongest gusts again occurring
near Lake Erie.
Outlook...Low ceilings and low visibility in snow showers will
persist into Sunday night for extreme NE Ohio and NW PA.
Intermittent snow showers and low ceilings will bring periods of
non-VFR for Monday through Thursday.

A Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 PM Sunday for U.S. waters
east of Conneaut, while a Gale Warning is in effect until 4 PM
Sunday for U.S. waters from Maumee Bay to Conneaut. The Low Water
Advisory for the western basin remains in effect until 7 PM Sunday
as a seiche continues. A Heavy Freezing Spray Warning takes effect
at 9 PM this evening for U.S. waters from Maumee Bay to Conneaut,
and takes effect at 4 AM Sunday for U.S. Waters east of Conneaut.
This warning is in effect until 7 PM EST this Monday.
A trough lingers over Lake Erie through Wednesday as a weakening low
meanders in a counter-clockwise manner from southwestern Quebec to
Hudson Bay and northern Manitoba and then to central Quebec via the
northern Great Lakes. SW'erly to W'erly winds as strong as 35 to 50
knots through this early evening are then expected to primarily be
in the 30 to 40 knot range tonight through Sunday as the
aforementioned low weakens gradually and the MSLP gradient relaxes
gradually in the eastern Great Lakes region. Waves as large as 10 to
20 feet are expected through this early evening and should subside
to 10 to 15 feet at most overnight tonight through Sunday.
SW'erly to W'erly winds should ease to about 20 to 30 knots Sunday
night and to roughly 15 to 25 knots Monday through Wednesday.
However, winds may be as strong as 30 knots on Wednesday as a
disturbance aloft strengthens the aforementioned surface trough.
Waves should subside to 8 feet or less by daybreak Monday and then
to 4 feet or less by daybreak Tuesday. However, waves are expected
to rebuild to as large as 5 to 10 feet later Tuesday through
Wednesday. SW'erly to W'erly winds as strong as 15 to 25 knots
Wednesday evening should ease to 15 knots or less on Thursday as a
weak ridge builds eastward over Lake Erie. Waves should subside to 4
feet or less by nightfall Thursday evening.
