Huron and is starting to slowly fill, with a current pressure of

been in the 50-55 mph range across inland areas, but gusts
around 60 mph have been observed near the lakeshore over the
past hour. As a mid-level shortwave and associated surface
trough pivots across the area the rest of the morning through
the early afternoon, an 50+ knot 850-925 mb jet will be
enhanced, and with deepening cold air advection, we should be
able to mix into these winds. The strongest flow aloft will be
near the lakeshore and over the lake, so expect peak gusts of
60-65 mph to occur in those areas late this morning through
early afternoon. However, gusts of 55-60 mph are still possible
inland with enough mixing. With all of this in mind, kept the
High Wind Warnings as is through the afternoon, as well as the
Wind Advisory for the southeastern most tier of counties where
the flow aloft is less leading to gusts of 50-55 mph at the
surface.
Regarding snowfall, the aforementioned shortwave is generating a
large area of light nuisance snow. This will continue to move
through north central and NE Ohio this morning before tapering
off from west to east this afternoon, so increased PoPs to
likely to categorical in most areas. Accumulations will mainly
be a dusting this afternoon, but areas near the lakeshore and in
the higher terrain of the primary snowbelt of NE Ohio and NW PA
could see up to 1 inch. After this departs, attention will turn
to lake-effect snow. Still looking like a primarily SW boundary
layer flow will keep the band over Lake Erie for the most part,
but there is a window late this evening into tonight for the
flow to veer enough that the band could clip far northern Erie
County PA. Kept the Winter Weather Advisory as is for this
(see previous discussion below).
Finally, temperatures will continue to fall through the low 20s
this afternoon in the strong cold air advection as arctic air
pours across the region. Wind chills are already in the single
digits and teens, and this will worsen through tonight, so the
Wind Chill Advisory will go into effect at 05Z Sun for areas
along and west of I-71 where wind chills will bottom out around
-15 F. However, values around -10 F are still possible farther
east tonight. Stay warm!
Original Discussion...
The main cold front is through the forecast area and scattered
snow showers are filling in behind the front with gusty
southwest winds. Winds will pick up a bit further this morning
with the pressure rises behind the departing low pressure system
and wind gusts of 50 to 65 mph remain possible across the
region.
Previous Discussion...
The overall theme with this near term package this morning is the
progression of hazards moving forward as the main low pressure
system departs the region. There are two new hazards this morning. A
Winter Weather Advisory for lake effect snow and blowing snow with
the strong southwest winds has been issued for northern Erie County,
PA. This advisory is valid from 1 PM this afternoon to 4 AM Sunday.
The most significant snowfall in our area will be this evening into
tonight and largely impact areas near the town of North East, PA
with higher snowfall rates into western New York and over Lake Erie.
A Wind Chill Advisory has also been issued for the western half of
the forecast area from Cuyahoga to Holmes County and west for
tonight into Sunday.
Strong cold air advection into the region will support temperatures
falling to the single digits and elevated winds will allow for wind
chill values to fall to 10 to 15 degrees below zero. Extensions of
the Wind Chill Advisory seem likely for Sunday night and beyond with
an Arctic air mass in place and elevated winds, which is described
more in the short term section below.
The main low pressure system is centered over Lower Michigan this
morning and will advance quickly northeast through Lake Huron and
into Canada. The cold front with this low is moving through the
forecast area early this morning with a band of rain showers moving
through Northeast Ohio and into Northwest Pennsylvania. Temperatures
behind the front are falling 10 degrees and some snow showers are
starting to approach Northwest Ohio behind the low. While some snow
showers will move through the region, the main concern will be the
significant winds expected through the region with a 50-60 kt 925 mb
jet coming down to the surface with the cold air advection. A High
Wind Warning has been posted for much of the forecast area with 50
kt wind gusts at the surface and a Wind Advisory remains in effect
for the remaining NE OH Counties and Crawford County, PA, where the
winds should stay just below 50 kt but elevated enough where some
impacts could be felt. Cold air advection into the region will be
strong to get lake effect processes going, but the fetch over the
lake will be southwest and favor snow generally away from the region
into western NY. Some snow should accumulate with the larger lift
across the region with the supporting trough aloft, but the most
intense lake snow should be away from the forecast area. Cold
temperatures and elevated winds will tank wind chill values across
the region and have the first round of Wind Chill Advisories out
with more to come through the week.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A surface trough will linger across the eastern Great Lakes through
Tuesday night as the polar vortex wobbles across Ontario to Quebec.
This should keep a southwesterly breeze going across the region with
a guarantee of cold temperatures. These cold temperatures combined
with the southwesterly breeze will keep wind chill values well below
zero across most of the region. So expect the wind chill advisories
and/or warnings to continue into Tuesday morning.
The very cold air flowing across the lake will generate lake effect
snow but the southwesterly flow looks like it will keep it flowing
into western NY. So at this point no headlines are expected across
NE OH into NW PA. We will watch to see if the region is clipped by
some light snow Tuesday with low pressure moving off the
southeastern US.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The polar vortex remains over the Great Lakes region through the
long term period. There is a stronger piece of jet energy that
should cross over the area Wednesday night and then again on Friday.
Each of these pieces will bring some snow showers with it and
enhance the lake effect snow that likely continues to flow into
western NY. Temperatures will continue to be well below seasonal
averages through the long term.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
A large area of light snow showers will continue to gradually
exit eastward this afternoon. The snow showers should be done at
KTOL and KFDY by 20Z, but it will take until this evening at
KMFD. Farther east, snow showers will continue into tonight
bringing periods of IFR to occasionally LIFR visibilities in
the heaviest bursts of snow. There should be a break mid to late
evening with just flurries before a surface trough brings
another flare up of snow showers after 05Z tonight, with KCLE,
KCAK, KYNG, and KERI seeing the bulk of this. Visibilities will
again dip to IFR in the heaviest bursts. KERI will see the most
persistent IFR visibilities this afternoon through tonight due
to lake enhanced snow showers from Lake Erie. All sites will see
drier conditions Sunday morning, but MVFR cigs will remain
locked in place areawide across northern Ohio and NW PA.
WSW winds of 20-30 knots this afternoon will continue to gust to
40-50 knots at times, especially in NW Ohio and near the
lakeshore. The winds seem to have peaked already and will
gradually subside this afternoon and evening. WSW winds of
15-20 knots gusting to 30-35 knots are generally expected
tonight and Sunday, with the strongest gusts again occurring
near Lake Erie.
Outlook...Low ceilings and low visibility in snow showers will
persist into Sunday night for extreme NE Ohio and NW PA.
Intermittent snow showers and low ceilings will bring periods of
non-VFR for Monday through Thursday.

.MARINE...
Low pressure over Lake Huron moves slowly northeast reaching Quebec
by this evening. This will generate gale to storm force winds on the
lake through the day. Winds should peak early afternoon then slowly
decrease. However the decrease likely remains above gale force for
the entire lake into Sunday evening. This means we believe we will
be able to remove the storm force winds a bit earlier than our
current timing but will let eh next shift take a look at one more
round of models before ending it.
A surface trough then remains over the eastern Great Lakes into
Wednesday with southwesterly winds continuing. We may end up with an
extended period of small craft advisories from Willowick to Ripley
as the southwesterly flow builds waves from west to east.
