.SYNOPSIS...
A cold flow across the eastern Great Lakes through Thursday will
maintain snow, and lake effect snow across our region. Lower
elevations will have light accumulations, while the lake effect snow
prone areas east of the Lakes will have greater snow accumulations,
especially east of Lake Ontario. The lake effect snow will taper off
to lighter snow showers and flurries through the day Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Regional radars show a broad, nebulous area of widespread snow
across much of the region this evening. This area of snow is being
forced by DPVA from a passing mid level shortwave, warm advection
from a warm frontal segment poised just upstream, and low/mid level
instability. An axis of heavy snow crossed Western NY during the
late afternoon and early evening as forcing maximized. This has
since weakened into a larger area of light to moderate snow. East of
Lake Ontario it is still cold enough for lake enhancement, with
coverage and intensity of snow increasing over the past few hours.

The snow across Western NY will continue for a few more hours
through mid evening before gradually tapering off overnight as deep
moisture and forcing move east of the area. Snow will continue most
of the night east of Lake Ontario from a combination of synoptic
scale forcing and lake enhancement. Expect most of the widespread
snow to be light to briefly moderate, but there will be an embedded
area of heavier snow focused on the Tug Hill Plateau from lake
enhancement and upslope flow.

Additional accumulations from 6PM this evening through 6AM Wednesday
will generally be a coating to 2" in most areas. The higher terrain
east of Lake Erie may see 2-4". There will be greater accumulations
east of Lake Ontario, with 2-4"/3-5" for most of the area and
localized 4-8" across the Tug Hill Plateau. A Winter Storm Warning
(Oswego/Lewis) and a Winter Weather Advisory (Jefferson) remain in
place east of Lake Ontario.

Wednesday will continue to be active with a stronger cold front
passing across the region. Lapse rates behind the front of 8 C/km in
the 850-700 hPa layer, coupled with a 40 knot LLJ aloft will bring
wind swept snow showers, possible graupel, that may briefly reduce
visibilities. Gusts tomorrow 35 to 45 mph, along and lingering
behind the frontal passage will continue blowing snow across the
higher terrain east of both Lakes.

Lows tonight will remain just a few degrees below freezing across
the region. Highs tomorrow will remain around freezing for the
higher terrain, and rise into the mid to upper 30s across lower
terrain ahead of the cold front.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Despite the calendar saying astronomical spring, the blustery and
winter-like pattern will continue through midweek. Following the
strong frontal passage on Wednesday, the axis of the main 500mb
trough will push east of the Great Lakes Wednesday evening. Strong
cold advection will be ongoing in its wake, with the coldest air of
the entire event (850H temps -16C to -17C) arriving by daybreak
Thursday. This frigid northwest flow will translate to overnight
surface temps bottoming out in the upper teens to low 20s, as well
as spur the development of additional lake effect snow downwind of
the lakes overnight. With no diurnal mixing from the sun to disrupt
the lake convergence bands and limited upstream connections to Lake
Huron and Georgian Bay, a couple of more prominent bands are
expected to develop off both lakes.

Off Lake Erie...With the general direction of the flow more
perpendicular to the long axis of the lake and surface high pressure
building into the region from the Upper Midwest...A weaker, more
disorganized multi-banded setup is expected east/southeast of the
lake Wednesday night into Thursday. Despite lowering EQL heights, an
upstream connection to Lake Huron will likely cause a more dominant
band to emerge somewhere in the vicinity of Erie, PA in the second
half of the night...possibly clipping extreme southern Chautauqua
County at times. Assuming this locally enhanced snowfall stays
mostly south of the forecast area as currently expected, this will
lead to only minor additional accumulations of around 1-2" through
Thursday morning.

Off Lake Ontario...While lake effect activity will initially be
rather scattered, deeper moisture in closer proximity to the passing
mid-level low, increasing nocturnal stability, longer fetch over the
lake and upstream connections to Georgian Bay will allow a distinct
convergence band to form southeast of the lake. Being further
removed from the building high to the west will also allow EQLs to
remain elevated in the vicinity of 10k feet overnight. This band is
expected to settle somewhere between far eastern Monroe County and
southern Oswego County, likely wobbling over Wayne County and
Northern Cayuga overnight. Main limiting factor here will be
potential drying of the DGZ later in the night as can be inferred
from NAM/GFS BUFKIT soundings over the eastern end of the lake.
While this does introduce some uncertainty in regards to additional
snowfall totals, at this juncture it appears an additional 2-4" is
possible in the aforementioned areas into Thursday, possibly higher
if upstream connections are fully realized and the band remains
nearly stationary overnight. Upslope showers on the Tug Hill and
Western Dacks could yield another inch or two.

Moving further into Thursday...While the cold airmass will remain
firmly overhead, the increasing sun angle and subsidence drying
should gradually taper off the lake effect snow off both lakes
through the day. High temperatures Thursday will be the coldest
we've seen yet this week, struggling to escape the 20s in many
areas. Breezy winds gusting 20-30mph will yield wind chills in the
teens.

A stout mid-level ridge and surface high pressure will move squarely
over the region Thursday night. This will end the last of any
lingering snow showers as well as lead to partial clearing. 850H
temps will still be on either side of around -12C at this point, and
with more efficient radiational cooling, sfc temps are expected to
plummet well into the teens across the region overnight. Lows in the
single digits are likely across the Tug Hill and Western Dacks by
daybreak Friday.

As high pressure quickly shuffles off to New England, attention
Friday will quickly turn towards a shortwave trough pivoting across
southern Ontario Province. An elongated area of surface low pressure
will extend a warm frontal segment into WNY Friday afternoon,
followed by a weak cold front Friday night. Still quite a few
uncertainties in this system, mainly in regards to onset timing and
precipitation type. While Friday night looks quite wet as the
system's 850H jet noses into the region and overspreads
precipitation into the region, guidance is relatively split on how
much shower activity reaches WNY with the warm front earlier in the
day Friday. The main concern here however is where the rain/snow
line ultimately sets up as even the latest 12z suite of guidance is
split on the depth of the warm air intrusion Friday night into
Saturday. The track of the low makes rain favored across the
Southern Tier and snow across the North Country, with the rain/snow
divide being oriented roughly parallel to the southern Lake Ontario
shoreline. In any case, snow ratios with this storm will be rather
low (well under 10:1) so expecting any snowfall to be of the wet,
heavy variety. Given the tentative setup, expect lots of tweaks
and refinements to the forecast for this system in future
updates.

Likewise...Surface temps Friday and Friday night will depend largely
on the ultimate track of the surface low, though a large north-south
dichotomy is expected. Highs Friday are expected to range from the
20s east of Lake Ontario to the low 40s near the NY/PA border, with
a range of 20s to low 30s Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Axis of the primary mid-level shortwave and surface low pressure
will move east of the region Saturday, with the forecast area slowly
drying out from east to west from the messy late-week system through
the day. Thereafter, a partial phasing of the northern and
southern stream jets over the Eastern Seaboard will lead to the
development of a strong coastal system over the weekend. To the
west, a large stacked low will be in the process of occluding
over the Mississippi River Valley and drifting into the Upper
Midwest. While the latter may eventually bring us renewed
chances for unsettled weather closer to the midweek timeframe,
between the two features across the eastern Great Lakes will be
a strong upper level ridge that will keep the forecast area
mainly dry Saturday night through Monday night.

Temps are expected to be seasonably cool Saturday and Sunday, before
a deep southeasterly flow ahead of next week's potential system
leads to a warming trend Monday and Tuesday.

.AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Widespread snow will continue this evening across Western NY with
IFR VSBY and MVFR/IFR CIGS. The snow across Western NY will taper
off to scattered snow showers and flurries overnight, with
conditions improving to VFR in most areas. East of Lake Ontario,
widespread snow and lake enhanced snow will continue much of the
night with widespread IFR VSBY and MVFR CIGS. Lake enhanced snow and
local LIFR conditions will focus across the Tug Hill Plateau.

Wednesday a re-enforcing push of colder air will arrive, with
several arctic cold fronts crossing the eastern Great Lakes. Each
cold front will likely produce areas of snow showers and possibly
snow squalls with local IFR to LIFR VSBY. The transient nature of
these snow showers will keep the low VSBY conditions relatively
brief in any one location, but also make the timing of IFR
conditions through the terminals difficult.

Outlook...

Wednesday night...Occasional lake effect snow showers with
local/brief IFR conditions. MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect.
Thursday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of snow showers and associated
brief/local IFR.
Friday...Mainly VFR with increasing chances for snow showers.
Friday night through Saturday...MVFR with chances for snow showers.
Sunday...mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
A tight sfc pressure gradient between relatively deep low pressure
to our north and high pressure centered over the Lower Mississippi
valley will support widespread small craft advisories throughout the
region into this evening. This includes the Upper IAG River and
Buffalo Harbor.

While winds will drop off a bit tonight...moderate to fresh breezes
will keep conditions choppy enough to warrant extending many of the
SCAs through the night up to when a widespread gale watch will go
into effect Wednesday afternoon.

The gale watch for Wednesday is a result of a 40kt low level jet
that will accompany the passage of...and persist for several hours
afterward behind a strong cold front.

...A BAND OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO DROP
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS WESTERN NEW YORK EARLY THIS EVENING...

At 614 PM EDT, the leading edge of a band of moderate to heavy snow
was located along a line extending from Batavia to Bradford.
Movement was east at 40 mph.

Locations impacted include...
Buffalo, Cheektowaga, West Seneca, Clarence, Lackawanna, Batavia,
Depew, Amherst, Olean, Lancaster, Hamburg, Geneseo, East Aurora,
Salamanca, Williamsville, Dansville, Wellsville, Allegany State Park,
Darien Lakes State Park, and Letchworth State Park.

This includes the following highways...
 Interstate 390 between exits 4 and 10.
 Interstate 90 between exits 47 and 57.
 Interstate 86 between exits 14 and 33.

This band of heavy snow will last about an hour at any given
location, and will bring greatly reduced visibilities to a quarter
mile or less, along with accumulating snow on roadways and rapidly
deteriorating driving conditions as it moves east across the area
this evening. Slow down and exercise caution if you will be driving
this evening. Low visibility shortens the amount of time you have to
react to situations.

While visibilities will improve quickly following the passage of
this band of snow...area roadways will remain snow covered and
slippery in its wake...so again you should be prepared to slow down
and exercise caution if you will be driving, even once the heavier
snow has ended.
