.SYNOPSIS...
A pair of cold fronts will plow through our region by this evening.
This will result in increasingly widespread snow showers with the
actual frontal passages being marked by squally bouts of moderately
heavy snow and significantly reduced visibilities. The colder air in
the wake of the fronts will then support some lake snow showers over
the western counties tonight into early Thursday. It will remain
cold with below normal temperatures Friday through the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An anomalously deep longwave trough centered over eastern Canada and
the Great Lakes region today will gradually push east across New
England tonight and Thursday. In the process...we can be GUARANTEED
that cold wintry conditions will REMAIN in place for at LEAST the
first two full days of Spring. As for the specifics...

A pair of cold fronts will plow across our region during this
period...one this morning and the second late this afternoon/early
evening. These fronts will prompt a dramatic uptick in the coverage
and intensity of snow showers throughout the forecast area...
especially over the western counties. While a pair of 30-35kt low
level jets will accompany the passage of the fronts...it will be the
second front that may require a little more 'attention'. Deepening
cold air in the wake of the first front will encourage lapse rates
to steepen to 8-10 deg c/km below H70...enough to support robust
convection along and/or immediately ahead of the second front. This
could result in a squall line of moderately heavy snow showers that
could be accompanied by some thunder. Such a feature would also lend
to a 15 minute period of significantly reduced visibilities and near
white out conditions and possibly a quick icing up of impacted
roadways. The highest probability for this would come late this
afternoon during the late day/evening rush hour over the IAG
Frontier and portions of the Genesee valley.

Otherwise...today will be cold with winds picking up to the point
where gusts of 35-40 mph will be common. Daytime snow accumulations
will generally range from one to three inches...although slightly
higher amounts will be possible in lake enhanced areas southeast of
Lake Erie and also in the vcnty of the Tug Hill.

Tonight...the truly colder in the wake of the second front will
pour across the region. This will establish multiple bands of
nuisance lake effect southeast of Lake Erie...while a band of
moderately heavy lake snow with an upstream connection to Lake Huron
will stream across Lake Ontario to Monroe...Wayne and Ontario
counties. Some weaker lake snow showers will be found across much of
the remainder of the region...particularly over the western counties
early on. Snowfall tonight will range from a fresh coating in most
areas to as much as 3 inches in the outlined Lake Huron-Ontario
band. The lake snow showers will be accompanied by wind gusts of 25
to 30 mph. meanwhile...the mercury will fall into the teens to lower
20s with single digit wind chill values.

Thursday will be downright cold...as the core of the coldest air
(H85 -16 to -18c) within the departing trough will make its way
across Srn Ontario and our forecast area. Max temps will NOT make it
back to the freezing mark as many areas will remain in the 20s. This
will make it feel more like January throughout the region. While the
very cold airmass will support some light snow showers...any
organized lake snow showers will weaken to flurries as an already
low cap in the vcnty of 5kft will continued to lower within an ever
drying environment.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A stout mid-level ridge and surface high pressure will move
squarely over the region Thursday night. This will end the last
of any lingering snow showers as well as lead to partial clearing.
850H temps will still be on either side of around -12C at this
point, and with more efficient radiational cooling, sfc temps
are expected to plummet well into the teens across the region
overnight. Lows in the single digits are likely across the Tug
Hill and Western Dacks by daybreak Friday.

As high pressure quickly shuffles off to New England, attention
Friday will quickly turn towards a shortwave trough pivoting across
southern Ontario Province. An elongated area of surface low pressure
will extend a warm frontal segment into WNY Friday afternoon,
followed by a weak cold front Friday night. Still quite a few
uncertainties in this system, mainly in regards to onset timing and
precipitation type. While Friday night looks quite wet as the
system's 850H jet noses into the region and overspreads
precipitation into the region, guidance is relatively split on how
much shower activity reaches WNY with the warm front earlier in the
day Friday. The main concern here however is where the rain/snow
line ultimately sets up as even the latest 12z suite of guidance is
split on the depth of the warm air intrusion Friday night into
Saturday. The track of the low makes rain favored across the
Southern Tier and snow across the North Country, with the rain/snow
divide being oriented roughly parallel to the southern Lake Ontario
shoreline. In any case, snow ratios with this storm will be rather
low (well under 10:1) so expecting any snowfall to be of the wet,
heavy variety. Given the tentative setup, expect lots of tweaks
and refinements to the forecast for this system in future
updates.

Likewise...Surface temps Friday and Friday night will depend largely
on the ultimate track of the surface low, though a large north-south
dichotomy is expected. Highs Friday are expected to range from the
20s east of Lake Ontario to the low 40s near the NY/PA border, with
a range of 20s to low 30s Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Axis of the primary mid-level shortwave and surface low pressure
will move east of the region Saturday, with the forecast area slowly
drying out from east to west from the messy late-week system through
the day. Thereafter, a partial phasing of the northern and southern
stream jets over the Eastern Seaboard will lead to the development
of a strong coastal system over the weekend. To the west, a
large stacked low will be in the process of occluding over the
Mississippi River Valley and drifting into the Upper Midwest.
While the latter may eventually bring us renewed chances for
unsettled weather closer to the midweek timeframe, between the
two features across the eastern Great Lakes will be a strong
upper level ridge that will keep the forecast area mainly dry
Saturday night through Monday night.

Temps are expected to be seasonably cool Saturday and Sunday, before
a deep southeasterly flow ahead of next week's potential system
leads to a warming trend Monday and Tuesday.

.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Conditions today will quickly deteriorate...as the first of two cold
fronts will promote increasingly widespread snow showers that will
highlight IFR to MVFR flight rules...again mainly from significantly
reduced vsbys at times. The second front will move into the area
after lunchtime and will keep MVFR to IFR conditions in place. It is
not out of the question that a thunderstorm or two could also
accompany the second front.

Along with the lowering CIGS and VSBYs today...sfc wind gusts will
increase to 35 knots for the midday and afternoon.

Tonight...the widespread snow showers will taper off to flurries in
the wake of the second cold front. This will allow most areas to
return to VFR flight rules...however MVFR weather will still be
possible at KROC from lake snows.

Outlook...

Thursday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of snow showers and associated
brief/local IFR.
Friday...Mainly VFR with increasing chances for snow showers.
Friday night through Saturday...MVFR with chances for snow showers.
Sunday...mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Winds will freshen to gale force intensity today on Lake Ontario...
while NEAR gale force winds will be found on Lake Erie. These winds
will be accompanied by moderately heavy snow showers at times.

In the wake of pair of cold fronts...winds late tonight will
gradually subside throughout the region. This will allow the new
gale warning on all of Lake Ontario to expire at 06z with high end
small craft advisories taking its place.

As sfc based ridging moves across the Lower Great Lakes later
Thursday and Thursday night...winds and waves will continue to
gradually subside. Looking further head to Friday...gentle to
moderate easterlies can be expected.
