next week east and northeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
A weak clipper system is exiting to the east and weakening
overnight, with the general rain/snow mix coming to an end.
Little if any additional accumulation off Lake Erie, but radar
shows a decent band off Lake Ontario extending into southern
Oswego County. This may drop another inch or so of wet snow.

A surface ridge will move into the region late tonight into Friday
morning. Besides some lingering scattered snow showers southeast of
Lake Ontario early Friday morning, the region will be calm and dry
into Friday afternoon. A southeast wind picks up Friday afternoon in
response to falling pressure across the Mid-western States. A mix of
rain and snow showers will move into the western Southern Tier by
very late Friday afternoon or early evening. High temperatures will
rise to the upper 30s to low 40s, mid 30s across the Tug Hill.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...Powerful Storm Will Impact the Region This Weekend with VERY
STRONG Winds and SIGNIFICANT Lake Effect Snows...

Models continuing to suggest an anomalously strong ~974 mb low
will pass by just to the west and northwest of the area Friday
night and Saturday. Southeasterly winds will continue to
strengthen across western New York Friday evening on the front
side of the system with the strongest winds in favored downslope
areas, as the southeast winds get enhanced off the higher
terrain of the Chautauqua Ridge and the Tug Hill Plateau. This
will be a similar set up to this past Tuesday's wind event, but
the low level jet is not quite as strong, but still could be
looking at peak wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Precipitation associated with this system may start off as a period
of wet snow, especially across higher terrain before transitioning
to all rain from south to north as warmer air surges into the area.
Snow accumulations for most of the area look very minor with the
higher terrain possibly seeing amounts up to 3 inches.

Strong occluded front plows across the area from west to east
during the second half of Friday night through the first half
of Saturday. Coldest airmass of the season starts to pour into
the region by the start of Saturday morning with rain already
transitioning back to snow across the western Southern Tier. A
60 knot low level jet within the cold advection will support
widespread wind gusts in excess of 60 mph in the favored
southwest wind corridor of Buffalo to Rochester with 50 to 60
mph wind gusts likely elsewhere.

Temperatures will fall across western New York through the day
Saturday as strong cold advection arrives into the region with most
of western New York falling to near or below freezing before
evening. As the synoptic precipitation lifts off to the
northeast Saturday afternoon, confidence is growing that heavy
lake effect snow will start to ramp up downwind of the lakes as
the very cold air surges into the region.

Plenty of lingering synoptic moisture and a saturated dendritic
growth zone in place will allow lake effect snows to intensify
Saturday night and Sunday and likely continue into Sunday night,
mainly across areas east of Lakes Erie and Ontario (south of Buffalo
and Watertown), although there looks to be a period when then lake
snows could shift north into the metro Buffalo and Watertown area.
Though exact band placement is still in question, there is enough
confidence that heavy lake effect snow combined with a continuation
of strong winds, producing considerable blowing and drifting
snow will have significant impact east of both Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario during this time period, with a Winter Storm Watch
issued for this time period. It will turn much colder with lows
in mid teens to lower 20s by Saturday night and highs Sunday in
the lower to mid 20s, upper teens for the higher terrain.
Lowest wind chills values will be in the single digits to near
zero.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A deep cutoff low over southern Hudson Bay Monday will slowly weaken
and retrograde west/southwestward back into northeastern Manitoba or
northern Ontario through much of the week. Deep cyclonic flow around
this low will advect arctic air down across much of the Lower 48,
leading to an extended period of below normal temperatures. With the
lakes still unseasonably warm and free of ice, this will also
maintain the risk for accumulating lake effect snows east of both
lakes through much of this period.

Overall confidence in how exactly the lake effect snow evolves
through the week remains low. At this range, steady lake effect snow
is expected to be ongoing northeast of both lakes Monday morning as
the DGZ remains saturated with plenty of lift below the inversion.
Lake-induced EQLs and winds will be coming down as a weak ridge of
surface high pressure builds over the area, which should decrease
the intensity and potential for blowing snow within the lake effect
bands. While the near constant influx of cold air aloft will be more
than enough to maintain some amount of lake-induced instability
thereafter, as the amount of available synoptic moisture and the
direction of the low/mid level flow driving the position of the lake
effect is much more uncertain. This comes as shortwave energy
pivoting through the base of the broader scale trough leads to it
taking on a more negative tilt and spurring the development of a
strong coastal low sometime late Monday night into Tuesday. As this
low tracks into the Canadian Maritimes it will reinforce the deep
troughing pattern across the northeast, driving potentially even
deeper arctic air southward into the region beyond the extended
forecast. Long range guidance continues to show large discrepancies
in the track and strength of this coastal low, as well as how it
interacts with the pre-existing trough over the Upper Great Lakes
with our region sandwiched between these two interacting features.

As previously mentioned, temperatures are expected to run below
normal next week and even beyond. High temperatures will struggle to
make it out of the low 20s across the lower terrain areas, likely
not even escaping the teens across the hilltops. Lows each night are
expected to be in the teens to single digits across the region.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The main near-term challenge is cigs with lots of low moisture
but patchy low clouds. There's a risk for IFR cigs through 14Z
Fri, but lower cigs have scattered out and given way to VFR cigs
at some spots. Will hedge more optimistic than most guidance,
and will only carry IFR at the climatologically favored KJHW
terminal.

By mid-morning Friday expect developing easterly flow to move
mix out the low moisture, with higher confidence in VFR cigs for
most of the day.

Friday evening, a strong low level jet will approach with
precipitation spreading quickly in the the region from the SE.
This will start as snow or a rain/snow mix but will trend to
rain. This will lower most sites to MVFR or IFR as cigs lower
and due to vsby restrictions. LLWS expected at KJHW where the
jet will be lowest and strongest.

Outlook...

Saturday...Strong winds. MVFR/IFR with rain changing to snow
from west to east.

Sunday...Windy. Heavy lake effect snow with IFR and lower east
of the lakes, MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect.

Monday...Heavy lake effect snow northeast of the lakes with IFR
and lower. MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect.

Tuesday...Widespread snow will likely result IFR.

.MARINE...
Another very deep storm system will arrive into the eastern Great
Lakes Friday night and into this weekend. Ahead of the storm
system low end east and southeast gales are likely for a narrow
window Friday night. As the low pulls away from the area this
weekend, southwest and west gales up to 45 knots are expected with a
gale warning in effect for both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, before
winds gradually subside Saturday night and Sunday. Storm force wind
gusts are likely Saturday and Saturday evening on both lakes.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong gales on Saturday have the potential to produce a lake
seiche which could result in lakeshore flooding along Lake Erie.
LEOFS seems very low (only reaching 6 feet) given the forecast
wind speeds. Instead would expect levels to rise to 8-9 feet
based on the strong southwesterly winds on Saturday. Because of
this, issued a Lakeshore Flood Watch for Erie and Chautauqua
counties. Was not confident enough to include Niagara County
which would require levels greater than 9 feet to cause
lakeshore flooding.
