.SYNOPSIS...
Starting out dry tonight before precipitation associated with
the next weather system arrives late overnight. A coastal storm
will bring accumulating snow to parts of southern New England
Sunday into early Monday. There is high confidence in heavy wet
snow across the interior high terrain...but a period of mixed
precipitation and marginal temperatures in the lower elevations
make the accumulations much more uncertain. Dry weather
dominates the rest of the work week from Tuesday onward with
seasonable temperatures.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT/...
* Mainly dry overnight,but otherwise mostly cloudy with
temperatures falling into the upper 20s and low 30s.
Weak mid-level ridge and high pressure build in ahead of strong
shortwave trough south of the Great Lakes. Over all it is a
quiet afternoon and evening, albeit gloomy, for southern New
England. The latest satellite trends depict a blanket of clouds
across the northeast, with some breaks in the clouds across
northeast Massachusetts. While a few peaks of sunshine are
possible, it is more likely to be mostly cloudy if not overcast.
Rest of the afternoon expect light and variable winds, along
with seasonable high temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s.
Post sunset, temperatures fall, dropping into the upper 20s and
low 30s during the overnight hours.

.SHORT TERM /MIDNIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
The deep shortwave trough and associated surface low moves east
towards the region. This will fill in any breaks in the low cloud
cover with moist southerly flow kicking in. Warm air advection
starts to kick in late overnight brining precipitation first to
the south coast and moving north. Precipitation type will
largely be driven by surface temperatures and dewpoints. Along
the south coast, Temps and dewpoints will be above freezing
which will keep precip as rain. However, further north across
the high terrain, temps and dewpoints could be below freezing
allowing for a wintry mix at onset. Overnight lows drop into the
low to mid 30s.

Details...
The main focus with this forecast is on the Winter Storm that will
impact the region Sunday into Monday. Overall...we have high
confidence in heavy snow occurring in the Berks and the northern
Worcester Hills given their elevation and thermal profiles.
However...as we have often seen the last few winters forecast
confidence is below normal across the lower elevations given
marginal temps and Ptype issues.
Dynamic upper level shortwave across the Ohio Valley slides east
early Sunday into PA/NY. In response...secondary coastal low
pressure emerges off the mid-Atlantic coast and intensifies as it
passes near the Benchmark later Sunday into early Monday. This is
normally an ideal heavy snow track for the I-95 corridor in late
January. However...in this case the antecedent airmass is unusually
mild for this time of year which will create Ptype issues. We will
break things down more specifically below.
1) Timing...
Precipitation will overspread most of the region Sunday morning into
the early afternoon from south to north. This is response to the
intensifying low pressure system and warm air advection processes.
An initially mild boundary layer may result in precipitation
beginning as rain in many of the lower elevations with snow in the
high terrain. However...strong forcing will result in
dynamic/adiabatic cooling processes to cool the column. Ptype should
flip to wet snow for a time at least north of a Hartford to
Providence line. Pretty strong forcing may allow the snow to fall at
rates of 1"+ per hour at times...but mid level warmth will begin to
move northward given the track of the mid level centers. Ptype
probably flips to rain/sleet for a time north of the CT/RI border
and may get north of the MA Turnpike for a time later Sunday into
Sunday evening. This will need to be sorted out though based on
guidance from later model runs. In addition...easterly low level
winds and a lack of a cold antecedent airmass may result in Ptype
issues at times along the immediate eastern MA coast
Regardless of how far north the mid level warmth gets...may see a
bit of a lull in the activity by late Sunday evening as mid level
dryslot may impact parts of the region especially across southeast
New England. However...closed mid level centers pushing east of the
region will allow colder air to return on the backside of the system
and the potential CCB. Rain may flip back to snow eventually all the
way to Cape Cod. The closed upper level low is elongated and
somewhat disorganized...but probably still enough there for a period
of snow late Sunday night into Monday morning on the backside of the
system.
2) Snow Accumulations & Headlines...
Given the above we are confident in heavy wet snow accumulations
across the high terrain of the Berkshires and northern Worcester
Hills. Thinking 5 to 10 inches seems reasonable and have continued
Winter Storm Watches in this region. Power outages are a possibility
too given the wet nature of the snow.
We also did expand the Winter Storm Watch into many of the lower
elevations of northern MA and southern Worcester county. Confidence
in accumulations is not as high in this region given more marginal
surface temps in the lower elevations. We did opt to go with a
Winter Storm Watch though as there is enough potential if the mid
level warmth does not get too far north and there is some comma head
snow potential on the backside. Later shifts can decide whether to
upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning or replace with an Advisory
depending on model trends.
Finally...the lower elevations south of I-90 will not only have to
contend with boundary layer issues but also with surge of mid-level
warmth. There probably will be some snow accumulations on the front
end and then on the back end...but right now do not think these
amounts warrant a watch.
So in a nutshell...high confidence in snow accumulations across the
Berks and northern Worcester Hills but more more uncertainty in the
lower elevations. Still potential for modest accumulations in the
lower elevations of northern MA...but it will be dependent on
rates.
3) Wind Expectations...
This low pressure system will be intensifying...but not to extreme
levels. Nonetheless...do expect some 20-30 mph wind gusts developing
across the interior with 30-40 mph gusts along the coast. Parts of
the Cape/Nantucket may see gusts on the order of 40-50 mph wind
gusts for a time.
Tuesday through Friday...
Most of the time was spent on the Sunday into early Monday Winter
Storm. Overall...quiet weather expected Tuesday through most of the
work week with much of the time featuring dry weather with fairly
seasonable temps.
