.SYNOPSIS...
Clouds, drizzle and fog continue late Friday into Saturday
morning, along with possibly some freezing drizzle across the
high terrain. Slow improvement Saturday, with some breaks of
sunshine possible late across western portions of MA/CT. A
coastal storm looks to bring accumulating snow to Southern New
England Sunday into Monday. Greatest potential for higher
accumulation in the higher terrain, with lesser accumulations
more favored in the lower elevations and coastal areas where
rain may mix in for a time. High pressure then builds in Monday
night and settles over Southern New England for the rest of the
workweek. Temperatures trend seasonable to slightly above normal
for the rest of the workweek.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1 AM Update:

Have issued an SPS for freezing drizzle across the high terrain
in northern MA. There are also areas of locally dense fog of
1/2 mile or less. May need another SPS or Dense Fog Advisory if
visibility trends continue to decrease. Regardless, use caution
while driving tonight.

10 PM Update:

As mentioned in the previous forecast discussion, will be
closely monitoring the potential for freezing drizzle across the
high terrain in northern MA. Surface temps are already nearing
freezing at 33-34F. If conditions warrant, and SPS for freezing
drizzle may be issued with future updates.

645 PM Update:

Overcast continues across Southern New England early tonight
with areas of drizzle, fog/mist with current temps in the mid
30s to low 40s. Shallow cooling boundary layer as cold air
damming ridge to our north building in will help lock in the
overcast - cloud bases probably lower a bit too. Fog could
become locally dense in spots but probably not widespread enough
to warrant any dense fog headlines. If we do see any areas of
dense fog it probably occurs through early overnight. Looking
at RAP-based cross sections toward daybreak, there's enough
cooling of the boundary layer where there's a less-inverted
temperature lapse rate to around 950 mb and that should improve
visbys.

Ended up reducing PoP into the 15-20% range for the evening and
overnight, and that still could be generous. Drizzle seems more
likely than measurable rain. With that said, will have to watch
temperatures across NH/ME tonight, as northerly flow could cause
temperatures to drop to near or just below freezing/30-32F
range. If that happens, any drizzle or fog could freeze and lead
to slippery spots near/north of Route 2 but not likely any
further south. As mentioned below though, seems unlikely we'll
need any statements or headlines for freezing drizzle.

Regardless, expect a dreary overcast with areas of drizzle, mist
and fog, with seasonably mild nighttime temps in the 30s too.
Really more reminiscent of a late-March night than one in late-
January!

Tonight...

Weak wave moves east of New England with mid level subsidence
overspreading the region. However, lots of low level moisture
trapped beneath this inversion, so remaining cloudy with areas of
drizzle and fog, locally dense at times especially in the high
terrain. Low probability (5-10%) of some spotty light freezing
drizzle/fog across northern Worcester county and northeast Franklin
county. Although, too low for any headlines or statements.
Otherwise, low temps in the 30s along with light ENE winds along the
coast, light northerly inland.

* Drying trend & possibly some late day breaks of sunshine

Weak short wave trough and surface front move through Saturday
morning, with winds shift from NNE to NW in the afternoon. Weak
subsidence and a wind shift will result in morning fog and drizzle
giving way to dry weather in the afternoon along with a few breaks
of late day sunshine possible, especially across western-central
MA/CT. Highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Saturday night...

* Mainly dry weather

Brief weak short wave ridging provides dry weather Saturday evening
along with a few breaks in the overcast. However, southern stream
system approaches from the southwest late, with increasing clouds
and a chance of rain toward daybreak Sunday across CT/RI, south
coastal MA and Islands. Not very cold by late January standards,
with lows only in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Light north winds
become light NE.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights:

* Coastal storm looks to bring higher-elevation snow Sunday into
  Monday, with a rain/snow mix Sunday and Sunday night to
  transition to snow for the lower elevations. Best chance for
  significant accumulations in the higher terrain. Lesser
  accumulation seems more favored in the lower elevations,
  although there is more uncertainty on accumulations here due
  to borderline temperatures and onshore flow.

* Impacts to the Monday morning commute is expected in most
  areas, which may linger into the Monday evening commute in
  eastern portions of Southern New England.

* Unsettled but mainly dry for most of the rest of the workweek.
  Temps cool off but still seasonable to slightly above normal.

Details:

Sunday into Monday:

Focus was centered in this period, as an area of low pressure over
the Mid-Atlantic/Virginia Piedmont area early Sunday moves ENE to a
location approximately near 40N/70W later Sun and Sun night, then
into Nova Scotia and adjacent waters through Mon. Ordinarily this
would be a track favorable for accumulating snow for most of
Southern New England, but the lack of preceding colder air and
influx of maritime air/onshore flow leading to borderline-supportive
temperatures for snow for at least a part of this time makes this
event challenging as far as forecasting snow accumulations goes.
There are also uncertainties in the storm's strength and also on the
liquid-equivalent QPF (the GFS/GEFS are lighter than the
Canadian/ECMWF solutions, while the NAM is a very juiced/wet
outlier).

What we can say with at least a reasonable degree of confidence is
that speaking generally, areas in the interior higher terrain are
most likely to remain as mostly or entirely wet snow. While no
winter storm is never exactly the same, this winter event may bear
out similarly to those experienced for much of this winter season
with a significant elevational component; temperatures in the lower
elevations may remain borderline enough to support a rain/snow mix
for a good amount of the time, and thus could lead to comparatively
less and likely slushy snow accumulation in these areas. Dynamic
cooling influences as the storm's upper level low nears our area on
Sunday night into Monday has a better chance of getting snow in the
lower elevations to accumulate. That's especially true for the RI/MA
coastal plain/coastal eastern MA and it could be a bit of a struggle
to get snow to accumulate until onshore winds shift to north and
north-northwest into later Sunday night into Monday.

For those reasons, we've opted to hoist Winter Storm Watches for the
interior higher terrain, including the Berkshires, northern
Worcester and northwest Middlesex Counties for Sunday into Monday.
Further expansion around those counties could be needed but we felt
it best to target those areas first where there is better confidence
on higher snow accumulations. Gale Watches are also now in effect
for the waters as well, as east to northeast winds increase as well.
There may be some splashover or a worst-case minor coastal flooding
along the east-facing coastlines, with low astro tides tempering the
coastal flooding risk.

An early look at snow accumulations would favor the higher
elevations for snow totals around 4 to 8 inches, with around 2 to 5
inches in the Merrimack and Pioneer Valleys, southern Worcester into
the hills in northern RI and Tolland/NW Windham Counties County in
CT. In the lower elevations and larger cities, snow amounts then
decrease significantly due to rain mixing in, ranging from a coating
to couple inches. These are still subject to change over the coming
days, but the overall theme should be that the higher terrain stands
the greatest potential for highest snow accumulations. With snow
beginning Sunday and lasting into Monday before tapering off Monday
afternoon/Monday evening, impacts to the Monday morning commute are
likely even outside where the Winter Storm Watch area is, and could
linger into the Monday late afternoon/evening commute.

Monday Evening Through Thursday:

High pressure builds southward in the wake of this departing system
for Monday night, which continues into a good portion of the
workweek. No significant wintry weather is anticipated in this
timeframe, although cyclonic flow aloft will entrench itself over
Southern New England. Though the airmass cools off, high and low
temperatures don't appear to be particularly cold, with highs in the
30s and lows in the teens to lower 20s.

.AVIATION /05Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecast Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update: Higher confidence in trends, lower to moderate
on timing improvement.

Rest of Tonight: LIFR ceilings with 1/2 to 2SM BR/FG and -DZ.
These conditions should more or less prevail with high
confidence, with any improvement being temporary. Better odds
for IFR ceilings after 12z Sat. Light NE winds.

Saturday...LIFR/IFR to start the day in low clouds, fog and
drizzle, but then slow/steady improvement thru the afternoon,
with a trend toward MVFR and dry weather. N-NE winds in the
morning become light NW in the afternoon.

Saturday night...

VFR/MVFR in the evening and dry weather will transition to
IFR/MVFR with rain toward daybreak Sunday. Light north wind
becomes light northeast late.

KBOS TAF...High confidence in trends, lower to moderate on
timing improvement. Mainly LIFR into Sat AM with areas of 1-3 SM
BR and -DZ, and light NE winds. Any improvement to IFR tonight
looks short-lived. Guarded optimism for IFR around 13-15z, but
