A 978 mb low 100 NM southwest of St Matthew Is will move to 200 
NM southwest of Gambell as a 980 NM low by 3am Fri, then weaken in
place. A 988 mb low will develop 200 NM west of Point Hope by 3am
Fri and move to 100 NM northwest of near Wrangel Is as a 994 mb 
low by 3pm Fri. A strong low will move north over the Southeast 
Bering Sea on Fri night and Sat.

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong storm moving north of the Bering Sea today through Fri
will bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions to the Yukon Delta
and SW Interior, with the snow and blizzard conditions spreading
north to the Seward Peninsula and St Lawrence Is by this
afternoon and then continue into Thu night. The snow will mix with
freezing rain at times over the YK Delta and SW Interior and
Eastern Norton Sound tonight into Thu Night, and could see one
tenth to one quarter inch of ice with the heaviest amounts over
SW AK.

This storm will also bring increasing east winds to the Southwest
Interior and West Coast from the Bering Strait south today, and
tonight to the Chukchi Sea Coast and to the Interior areas
subject to east winds (Kobuk Valley near Shungnak, Dalton Highway
Summits, and Tanana Valley near Delta Junction). South winds will
increase through Brooks Range Passes tonight and through the
Alaska Range Passes on Thu as well. These winds will continue
into Thu night. Many of these windy areas will have blowing snow.

East winds of 20 to 30 mph over the Arctic Coast from Utqiagvik
east will decrease today, then increase again Thu night into the
weekend as the previously mentioned storm moves north. Expect east
winds to increase to 20 to 30 mph from Utqiagvik east Thu night
into Fri, then increase to gale force on Sat and continue into
Sun.

The cold Arctic airmass with near normal temperatures over
Northern AK will moderate significantly over the West Coast and
Western Interior today and tonight, while the Eastern Interior
remains at or below normal for temps.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a strong ridge over the Eastern
Pacific north across Alaska to near the North Pole and a deep
trough over Western Canada with another deep trough over Eastern
Russia and the Western Bering Sea. This pattern will hold through
Fri, then break down Sat as a a strong short wave over NW Canada
moves west across Northern AK and forms a cutoff low over NW AK by
Sun. A series of short wave troughs moving north over the Bering
Sea and West Coast of AK the next several days will bring
significant precipitation to the West Coast through Fri or Sat.
The short wave moving west across Northern AK this weekend will
bring a chance of snow to many areas this weekend.

850 mb temperatures rise start out -10C to -20C with an Arctic
airmass covering most of AK. 850 mb temps will rise above
freezing and move north to SW AK by 3pm this afternoon, to the
area south of Golovin to Minchumina by 3am Thu, to St Marys to
Kotzebue to Nenana by by 3pm Thu and then over the Western
Interior and Western North Slope Thu night before dropping back
below freezing on Fri. The possibility of freezing rain will move
north with the 850 mb 0C line, with up to one quarter inch of ice over
the Yk Delta and lower Yukon Valleys, with up to one tenth of an
inch over the Eastern Seward Pen and portion of the far Western
Interior.

Surface...
A 1045 mb high over the Beaufort Sea will build south over NW
Canada tonight with the high over NW Canada strengthening to 1050
mb on Thu, then weakening slowly into the weekend.

A low pressure trough over the North Slope of Alaska will weaken
today, then strengthen from Thu into Sat. This combined with the

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialize well aloft at 00Z except that the 500 mb heights
at Utqiagvik are 20 meters too low on most models. Models show
similar solutions aloft through 3am Fri, then start to see
differences on short wave strength and timing Fri PM into the
weekend. Will use a blend of models for features aloft through the
weekend.

With precipitation, the NAM and GFS keep precip a bit further west
than the ECMWF today and tonight, then come into better agreement
Thu PM into Fri. Will use a blend of the NAM and GFS for precip
with the following highlights:
FLurries and stratus over the SE Interior and Western North Slope
will diminish this afternoon as wind increase mixed and cause
clouds to diminish in those areas. Snow spreading north over the
YK Delta this morning, to Gambell to Anvik by 3pm today, then to
Shageluk to Shishmaref by 3am Thu, then to Shageluk to Shishmaref
to Point Hope by 3pm Thu, and remaining in place into early Fri
then tapering off Fri. The possibility of freezing rain mixed
with snow will move north to the YK Delta and SW Interior by 3pm
this afternoon, to the area south of Golovin to Shageluk by 3am
Thu, to St Marys to Kotzebue to Shageluk by by 3pm Thu, and then
over the Western Interior Thu night.

1.0 to 1.5 inches of precip expected today through Fri AM from
Anvik southwest to the YK Delta, along the Southern Seward Pen
from Elim to the Bering Strait, and over St Lawrence Is. Expect
this to yield 8 to 12 inches of snow most of those areas, with up
to one quarter inch of ice over the YK Delta and Lower Yukon
Valleys from Anvik SW, with up to one tenth of an inch over the
Eastern Seward Pen and portions of the far Western Interior, with
a trace of ice possible from Kotzebue north.

At the surface at 06Z, models verify well on most features. Models
have similar solutions at the surface through 3am Fri, then
differ significantly on strength of deep low moving into SE
Bering Sea Fri night into Sat. At this time will use the NAM for
details shown. Highlights are east gales developing over the West
Coast from the Bering Strait south today, and tonight to the
Chukchi Sea Coast, with east winds 30 gusting to 40 mph over the
Interior areas subject to east winds (Kobuk Valley near Shungnak,

...Strong East Winds and Blowing Snow Possible Friday and This
Weekend...

Easterly winds are expected to increase to 35 mph on Friday and
to 60 mph over the weekend. This will cause blowing snow to
develop Friday, with blizzard conditions possible over the
weekend. The strongest winds and lowest visibility are expected
from Prudhoe Bay east late Friday night through Sunday.
