Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Overall calmer and quieter conditions expected across
the regions tonight. Light snow persists across portions of the
Interior this afternoon but will taper tonight as conditions clear
and temperatures cool. Expect the Interior to remain dry through
Wednesday, but for gusty winds to develop and persist into Friday
near the Dalton Highway Summits and portions of the Delta Junction.
A system will track into the Bering Sea on Wednesday, bringing
strong winds, snow, mixed precipitation, and blowing snow to
portions of the West Coast into Friday.

.DISCUSSION...

Analysis and Model Discussion...Conditions this afternoon and
evening will be calmer region-wide. Light snow over the Southeast
Interior, Western Interior, and West Coast from Norton Sound
northward today will taper to flurries tonight. No impacts are
expected and general accumulations of 1 inch or less are expected.
High pressure building over the Yukon and a frontal boundary draped
across the Interior pushing southward will allow for cold air to
pool into portions of the Eastern Interior for overall cooler
temperatures Wednesday and Thursday. Another low pressure system
will move into the Bering Sea Wednesday and track northward
Thursday into Friday, bringing another round of strong winds,
snow, mixed precipitation, and blowing snow to portions of the
West Coast.

Models generally remain in agreement with the overall pattern
through the short term, though have shifted the precipitation with
the system moving into the West Coast midweek a little further to
the west today. Have continued to trend that way in the forecast
for now, which has shaved off a few inches of snow for portions
of the West Coast. Precipitation type amongst guidance remains
tricky, however still expect precip to start as snow and to
transition to rain or mixed precipitation. Ice accumulation will
be possible as well, generally for areas south of Nome.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Latest observations along the Slope
show winds remaining breezy along the Arctic Coast, mainly from
Kaktovik eastward. Winds will continue to ease tonight. With high
pressure remaining over the Arctic and low pressure moving into
the Bering Sea, do not expect much in the way of a pattern change
through Friday. Easterly winds across the Arctic Coast will start
to increase again over the weekend, with winds potentially gusting
up to 60 mph at times - which could bring another round of blowing
and drifting snow to portions of the Arctic Coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...Ridging over the West Coast will
keep conditions generally calmer through tonight, before another
low tracks into the Bering Sea early Wednesday. Precipitation
looks to start out as snow Wednesday for the Yukon Delta, but
then looks to transition to mixed precip for areas primarily from
Nome southward. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the Yukon
Delta and the Seward Peninsula for gusty winds, heavy snow, mixed
precip, and areas of blowing snow. For areas north of the Seward
Peninsula, expect windy, but drier conditions with generally 1-3
inches of snow expected. High Wind Watches have been issued for
areas along the Kotzebue Sound, where wind gusts up to 60 mph will
be possible as this system tracks northward.

Central and Eastern Interior...Light snow across the Interior
will taper to flurries tonight. Expect skies to clear and for
cooler temperatures to take hold across the region. Wednesday
morning lows look to dip down into the negative 20s and 30s, with
Wednesday's highs looking to top out in the negative teens to
negative 20s for Fairbanks. Further north, across the Yukon
Flats, could see daily highs dip into the negative 30s and morning
lows drop into the negative 40s. With a low moving into the
Bering Sea midweek and higher pressure situated over Canada,
expect the Tanana Valley Jet to pick up over the region Wednesday
night into Thursday. Additionally, strong winds across the Dalton
Highway Summits will bring another round of blowing snow to the
highway corridor Wednesday night through Thursday and could result
in reduced visibilities at times.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 Through 7...Ensemble clusters
continue to hint at some degree of upper level ridging building
across the eastern Gulf and into Interior Alaska with some form of
troughing remaining over the Bering Sea over the weekend. Meanwhile,
latest ECMWF and GFS runs do show another low moving into SW
Alaska. Should the axis of the ridging continue to shift east,
models suggest the Arctic trough retrograding over northern
Alaska. Discrepancies in the long term remain, so will have to see
how models trend over the next few days. However, guidance has
remained rather consistent in strong easterly winds redeveloping
along the Arctic Coast Saturday and Sunday.

Easterly winds are expected to increase late this week to 35 to 45
