.SYNOPSIS...
A closed low persisting across northern Baja will continue to
generate rain and isolated thunderstorms tonight, with the
heaviest and most widespread activity occurring across San Diego
County. Areas farther north will see only isolated activity, with
the highest chances occurring in the mountains. Briefly warmer for
Monday before a strong storm system moves through the Great
Basin, generating very strong winds early Tuesday morning through
Tuesday night, with potentially damaging winds across the
mountains and deserts. Only slight chances for precipitation with
this next system. Much colder for Wednesday and Thursday. An
additional storm system looks to arrive late week, providing the
next chance for more widespread precipitation.

Update...
The 00z Miramar sounding showed 395 J/kg of SBCAPE, SFC-3km lapse
rate of 7.5 C/km, and 3-6km lapse rate of 8.0 C/km, showing
instability west of the mountains this evening. This is
materializing tonight, as moderate rain and embedded convective
cells are impacting the San Diego County valleys and coast. More
traditional convective cells have occurred this evening across the
lower deserts. Hi-res guidance continues to show convection
through the rest of this evening and into tomorrow morning, so a
slight chance for thunder has been introduced for San Diego
County, the lower deserts and the Riverside County Mountains.

Rain intensity has picked up over the last several hours across
San Diego County, with southern portions of the county seeing a
few tenths of an inch from the valleys, and amounts approaching
three-quarters of an inch in the mountains. Our latest rain
accumulations are posted on our webpage at weather.gov/sgx. Rain
will persist across San Diego County through the overnight hours,
with most activity tapering off by daybreak on Monday.

No forecast updates are needed for points farther north this
evening.

Previous Discussion (Issued 129 PM PST Sun Feb 12 2023)...

An active and amplified pattern over the Eastern Pacific and US
West Coast will lead to a rather active week of weather across
SoCal. Ironically enough, forecast confidence in the next 24-36
hours remains more uncertain than periods onward due to the
presence of a cutoff upper level low, with the attendant surface
low meandering in the California Bight roughly 150 miles west-
southwest of San Diego. The amplifying ridge over the Central and
Eastern Pacific will eventually push this system inland, spreading
moisture inland. The most likely onset/arrival time of
precipitation in San Diego County still looks to be late this
afternoon and evening, but some isolated showers may occur along
the coast at least intermittently at times this morning. Moisture
wrapping around the low will favor more widespread precipitation
generally after 00-02z Monday. Showers look to persist in much of
the Peninsular mountain ranges and desert foothills through Monday
morning with PoPs of 50-70% in these regions. Coastal and inland
valley locations will likely see more scattered showers (generally
a 20-30% chance for rain), best chances in San Diego County.
Confidence is particularly low in rain chances across the Inland
Empire, Orange County, and the High Deserts.

Overall precipitation totals will remain light, with the San
Diego County Mountains likely cashing in on the highest amounts of
0.30-0.50 inch with any stronger wrap-around rain bands. Areas
west of the mountains will range from no rain at all to upwards of
0.30 inch, likely getting robbed of the stronger showers due to
shadowing. Hi-res guidance does suggest the potential for some
heavier precipitation with rates of up to 0.50”/hr in San Diego
County, likely hinting at the potential for some at least weak
frontogenesis aloft as the low passes to our south. This would
naturally lead to higher precipitation amounts in localized areas.
However, timing and placement of this feature remain uncertain,
so any potential upward adjustments in the precipitation forecast
will likely need to be handled as a “nowcast” based on radar
trends. Snow levels look to remain between 4000-5000 FT across
much of the peninsular ranges so the Winter Weather Advisories
will continue as planned.

The next wave will be diving into the Great Basin from the Gulf
of Alaska/northwestern Canada as the upper ridge over the Pacific
becomes very strong. EPS standardized 500mb height anomalies
suggest 500mb heights roughly 2 standard deviations above
climatology over the Eastern Pacific on Monday and Tuesday. The
track of this next wave will favor more wind and cold impacts as
opposed to precipitation. ECMWF EFI guidance highlights the high
wind potential with much of SoCal projected to see wind gusts
higher than model climatology, especially over the coastal waters
where a more significant wind event looks likely per SOT guidance.
The High Wind Watch for the mtns/deserts remains in effect from
early Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. Precipitation with
this event again looks fairly light and confined to areas from the
mountains westward, with amounts generally of 0.30 inch or less
for most locations.

As hinted earlier, the back trajectory of this upper wave runs to
northwestern Canada and the Gulf of Alaska, so very cold air will
be in tow. Lows both Wednesday and Thursday morning look to
bottom out well below normal, anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees below
seasonal normals. EFI guidance also highlights the potential for
very cold temperatures, especially along coastal locations where
most, if not all ensemble members favor temperatures colder than
model climate. This wave will also help keep daily highs several
degrees cooler than normal through the end of the week.

The third system in this pattern, arriving as early as sometime
Friday but more likely the weekend, looks to behave similarly to
today’s cutoff low, dropping to our south in response to the
central/eastern Pacific ridge becoming very strong again. Given
that this is the Day 6-7+ time frame, details naturally remain
unclear. This is also exacerbated by the potential for yet another
cutoff upper low. Global ensembles do appear to favor at least
low-end precipitation chances for much of SoCal, with NBM guidance
keeping PoPs around the 30-50% range from the mountains westward.
The overall pattern would also favor cooler, cloudier, and windier
weather for this weekend.

.AVIATION...
130430Z...Coast/Valleys...SCT-BKN low clouds with bases 2500-5000
feet MSL will cover much of the region. Scattered SHRA and ISOLD
TSRA will continue through about 10Z vcnty KTRM, KCRQ and KSAN.
The highest chances of rain will be in SD County. Brief vis
reductions possible in heavier SHRA.

Mountains/Deserts...BKN-OVC clouds layered 7,000-20,000 feet MSL
into Monday morning. Coastal slopes of the mountains will locally be
obscured in clouds/fog below 5,000 feet MSL this evening into Monday
morning. Rain and mtn snow showers will continue at times through
early Monday morning - mainly in San Diego County - and occasional
lightning flashes are expected. Vis reductions of 1-3 SM possible in
heavier SHRA/SHSN. Skies partially clearing by Monday afternoon.

.MARINE...
Scattered showers will continue over the waters into early Monday
morning. An occasional flash of lightning cannot be ruled out but
the chances are very small. Otherwise, no hazardous marine
conditions are expected through Monday. Strong northwest winds and
rough seas will develop on Tuesday. Chances are moderate that waves
12 to 16 feet and wind gusts locally over 40 kts will occur on
Tuesday. A Gale Watch continues for these areas from Tuesday
afternoon through Tuesday night.

There is a small chance for lightning at the beaches through about 2
AM Monday morning. A long-period west-northwest swell from 280/290
degrees could generate more widespread elevated to high surf Tuesday
and Wednesday.
