Area forecast discussion, Mar 29, 11:33 PM CDT, 3 hours 15 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Springfield MO
1133 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

Key Messages:

1. Wind gusts to 40 mph possible Thursday/Thursday night. Gusts to
40-55 mph possible Friday.

2. Thunderstorms will likely affect the area from Thursday night
through Friday evening. There is a risk for severe thunderstorms
and a localized flooding threat on Friday.

3. Fire Weather Watch Friday afternoon and evening over
southeastern KS and western MO. Critical fire weather conditions
due to dry air and strong winds.

4. Active weather pattern returns next week, including severe
thunderstorm potential Tuesday and Tuesday night.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 345 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

Tonight will be quiet with lows in the 40s under partly cloudy
skies.

Things begin to ramp up on Thursday, mainly in the form of
increasing southerly winds ahead of the incoming system. Look for
southerly winds of 15-25 mph gusting to 25-40 mph, strongest in
the evening. We could see some isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the far western CWA late in the day, but confidence is
limited and no severe concerns exist with these.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday Night through Wednesday)
Issued at 345 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

Thursday night and Friday:

As the system moves well north of the area Thursday night into
Friday, strong winds through the profile will translate to the
surface. Expect increasing winds Thursday night and the strongest
winds (gusts of 40-55 mph) on Friday. Models indicate the
strongest winds will be Friday afternoon and evening near and
just behind the dryline when mixing will be enhanced. A few higher
gusts are possible if greater mixing can be realized. Winds will
diminish Friday night.

Shower and thunderstorm potential exists Thursday night, but
coverage looks minimal due to capping and limited forcing.
However, if any storms do occur, they could be strong to severe
with mainly a damaging wind threat. Instability will be limited,
but impressive wind fields will lead to very strong shear.

On Friday, as the system moves well north of the area, the CWA
will be between greater instability to the south and greater
forcing to the north. Capping in place will be able to be broken
by a dryline moving in from the west in the afternoon and evening,
if not before then. Questions still remain on timing and coverage,
but at this time the best potential for severe storms is along and
east of Highway 65 in the afternoon and early evening. Storm
motions will be abnormally fast due to the wind fields (60+ knot
winds as low as 850mb and a 150-160 knot upper jet overhead). The
main severe threat is expected to be damaging straight line winds
given limited CAPE (500-1,000 J/kg), high shear (effective shear
of 70-80 knots), and hodographs that will favor rapid upscale
growth. However, a limited tornado and 1 inch hail threat will
still exist, pending further details that still need to be sorted
out.

Behind the dry line Friday, strong winds and very dry air (RH
values in the 20s, possibly into the teens) are expected to lead
to critical grassland fire weather conditions over the west
Friday afternoon and evening. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued
for this threat.

This weekend into next week:

Elevated fire weather conditions will be possible this weekend
with breezy winds and low RH values.

Active weather returns next week with gusty winds and off and on
chances for showers and thunderstorms. While confidence is limited
at this time, there is a severe weather risk in the
Tuesday/Tuesday night time frame.

High temperatures in the 70s to low 80s are possible Monday and
Tuesday.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)
Issued at 1129 PM CDT Wed Mar 29 2023

Winds will gradually increase out of the south tonight as the
pressure gradient tightens up with the approach of the next
system. Gulf moisture will increase and we should see some
ceilings develop in the 4000-5000 foot range on Thursday. Winds
will start to become quite gusty with some gusts of 25 to 30 kts
possible during the afternoon and evening. Some CAMS are
developing some showers in the warm advection regime Thursday
evening, but probabilities look too low for TAF inclusion at this
time.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Missouri
Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Monday.

Strong to severe storms will likely impact the Missouri Ozarks
and possibly southeast Kansas, starting sometime around midday
on Friday and moving eastward across the area through the
afternoon. The exact timing of storm development is still
uncertain. The main severe weather risk will be damaging
straight line winds. Some localized flooding may occur over
south central Missouri Friday into Friday night as a result of
the rainfall and wet soil conditions, though widespread flooding
  is not expected.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph will be possible on Thursday, with
gusts 40 to 55 mph likely on Friday.

Gusty winds and dry air Friday afternoon and evening may lead
to critical fire danger over southeastern Kansas and portions of
  western Missouri.

Another round of thunderstorms is possible Tuesday into Tuesday
night next week. Potential exists for strong to severe
thunderstorms, but many details remain unclear at this time.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight.
