.SYNOPSIS...
Clouds continue to increase tonight as high pressure retreats
northeast. Rain and gusty winds develop Sunday into Monday as a
large low pressure system tracks across the area. Snow showers
are expected for the mountains Monday night into Tuesday, with
temperatures trending cooler.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 645 PM EST Saturday...

No changes to the forecast were made this evening. Still
expecting quiet weather overnight in advance of a busy weather
day tomorrow. Low pressure continues to strengthen over the Gulf
of Mexico and will move across Florida tonight and into the
Carolinas by the morning. Rain should begin tomorrow morning
around sunrise and spread northward throughout the morning.

As of 100 PM EST Saturday...

Key Messages:

1. Increasing clouds tonight.

2. Gusty winds for the western mountains tonight and tomorrow.

3. Widespread moderate to heavy rain beginning tomorrow morning.

An upper level trough was moving through the Midwest today, and
as its axis moves into the Gulf of Mexico tonight, it will
interact with another system in that region. By Sunday, most of
the energy will be concentrated with the deepening southern
stream system, which crosses GA and FL as it moves towards the
Carolinas.

Moisture from these two systems was spreading north and east
this afternoon, and clouds will continue to increase to overcast
tonight. Isentropic lift begins to ramp up over western NC and
the southern Blue Ridge in the early morning hours Sunday, and
rain gradually spreads north and east into the remainder of the
region by 7-10 AM and lasting throughout the day and night.
Southeast winds late tonight and into the morning will gust
into the 15-25 range for the mountains, with gusts near 35 mph
for our highest peaks.

The best moisture and lift through Sunday should be
concentrated along and east of the Blue Ridge, however the exact
location and orientation of the surface and 700mb lows will
help determine where any heavy rainbands set up. Peterson
frontogenesis is showing a strong area of forcing moving through
tomorrow afternoon and evening from south to north. Beginning
in the afternoon, most of the area can expect heavy rainfall,
especially in any mesoscale banding or training. Urban and small
stream flooding is likely, however FFG values are high, so not
expecting any significant flooding warranting a Flood Watch...at
least through tomorrow evening. As the event evolves Sunday
night into Monday, one may be needed.

Surface temperatures tonight are expected to drop into the
upper 30s to low 40s and remain nearly steady for a few hours
towards morning as WAA increases from the south and west.
Tomorrow, undercut guidance due to overcast cloud cover and
rain, yielding highs in the 40s to maybe 50.

Confidence in the near term forecast is moderate.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 235 PM EST Saturday...

Key Messages:

1: Heavy rainfall moves north out of the area Sunday night.

2: Moderate to heavy snow develops Monday afternoon continuing
through Monday Night before ending Tuesday morning western
mountains. Winter Storm Watch in effect for Western Greenbrier
County WV.

3: Windy and cold Tuesday with snow showers ending.

A deep surface low and upper low will be lifting rapidly
northward along the southeast U.S. coast toward the Mid-Atlantic
coast Sunday Night/Monday morning. The main core associated
rain will track along and east of the I-95 corridor as this
occurs. A distinct deformation zone will be present on the back
side of the northward tracking upper low moving across our area
and especially the western Piedmont into north central VA. The
heaviest rainfall will begin pulling out of the RNK CWA during
this time frame with precipitation tapering to scattered showers
and sprinkles during the morning/mid-day period on Monday.

Meanwhile, a rapidly deepening upper low will be digging
southward across the Great Lakes into the central Appalachians
during the day Monday. This will send a secondary surge of
Canadian air into the area accompanied by a period of moderate
to occasionally heavy snow/snow showers by Monday
afternoon/Monday night before ending Tuesday morning. Upslope
will focus the heaviest snow along the western slopes of the
Alleghanys. However, measurable snowfall is expected southward
as far as northwest NC and as far east as the Blue Ridge.

Snowfall amounts of 6-8 inches appear likely across western
Greenbrier county with this event, with lesser amounts of 1-4
inches possible south through the higher terrain of southwestern
VA and northwest NC. Light amounts of snow, possibly up to an
inch can be expected east toward the Blue Ridge. East of the
Blue Ridge little if any snow is expected. A Winter Storm Watch
has been issued for western Greenbrier given WPC WSO 50%+
probabilities and consensus of neighboring offices to issue a
WSW now rather than wait.

The other issue during this time frame will be the wind. The
deepening upper low combined with the surface low moving
northward along the coast will initially bring strong east winds
then shifting to the northwest behind the secondary cold
front/surge of Canadian air Monday night. Higher terrain could
see wind gusts in excess of 40 mph with 35 mph wind gusts in the
lower terrain. This will also result in blowing and drifting of
the snow in the western mountains as snow amounts increase. A
wind advisory may need to be considered with later forecasts for
Monday afternoon/Monday night.

Given that there is no true real tap into Arctic air, but rather
the dynamics of the upper low is helping to pull down cold air
from Canada, this will not be a bitter cold event. Temperatures
will be marginally around the freezing mark until the colder air
surges in Monday night/Tuesday morning when temperatures drop
well into the 20s with teens by Tuesday morning when winds
diminish and skies clear.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 300 PM EST Saturday...

Key Messages:

1. Benign weather expected through the period.

2. Temperatures will moderate to near normal levels.

3. Next chance for precipitation does not arrive until the
weekend.

Similar to last week, a large high pressure area will build over
the area from the southwest Tuesday-Wednesday and remain in
control of the lower Mid- Atlantic for Wednesday and Thursday,
resulting in mostly clear skies and generally light winds. And
with broad upper level ridging developing during the second half
of next week, the region will enter a gradual warming. This will
allow temperatures to rise to levels just above normal, mainly
for high temperatures.

Will be keeping an eye on the next potential for precipitation
that will begin developing across the central Plains region on
Friday. A warm front passing north across the Tennessee Valley
may trigger a few showers that affect the mountains, though
confidence on any precipitation for our region remains low this
far out in time. It looks to be Saturday or even Sunday before
much precipitation reaches areas east of the Appalachians.

.AVIATION /23Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 650 PM EST Saturday...

VFR conditions are expected through 10Z or so Sunday. Ceilings
and visibilities lower to MVFR around that time, and LIFR
around 15Z or so in RA/+RA at all terminals. ESE winds increase
across the ridges tonight and becoming gusty over and west of
the mountains through Sunday morning due to increasing LLJ
winds. Widespread RA/+RA and MVFR to IFR conditions continue Sunday
night. Winds Sunday will be ENE and will have gusts to 20-25 kts
mainly just for the piedmont in the late afternoon and evening.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK...

Monday we may will see improvement to VFR for the piedmont,
while upslope SN and MVFR or lower ceilings are expected for the
mountains. Gusty WNW winds in the 25-35 kt range are forecast
Monday and Tuesday, with even higher speeds for the ridges.

We should see a return to VFR for the mountains by midday
Tuesday. Wednesday will be VFR everywhere.
