.SYNOPSIS...
Rain and gusty winds are expected today and tonight as a large
low pressure system tracks northeast along the East Coast.
Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with the heavier
amounts occuring east of the mountains. The storm is expected to
strengthen as it moves up the east coast, pulling colder air
into the region from the northwest on Monday. This will result
in mountain snow showers and a continuation of the gusty winds,
Monday into Tuesday. Accumulating snow is likely Monday night
from the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia, through parts of
the New River Valley and into the High Country of North
Carolina.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 115 PM EST Sunday...

Key Messages:

1. Strong low pressure will pass to our east, bringing rainfall,
which will be heavy at times.

2. Very gusty winds for Monday.

3. Upslope snow begins Monday afternoon.

A strong low pressure system is moving northward, just east of
the South Carolina coastline. This area of low pressure will
continue to rapidly deepen moving northeastward into eastern
North Carolina by this evening, spreading rain northward
through the mid- Atlantic in addition to thunderstorms along the
coast. This is a very dynamic system, so the rain may be heavy
at times, especially east of the mountains. Winds will also
increase, and will become increasingly gusty as the storm gains
latitude tonight into Monday.

Rain this morning and early afternoon has been on the lighter
side so far, but heavier rain is expected to move north into the
area later this afternoon and tonight as the best lift
associated with the storm moves over the region. Several hours
of heavy rainfall can be expected until eventually the rain
tapers off from southwest to northeast through early Monday
morning. The low pressure system will rapidly continue northeast
and the only remaining precipitation will be in the form of
wrap-around upslope rain and snow showers on Monday morning.

Upslope clouds will cover much of the area Monday morning, but
some clearing east of the mountains will be possible Monday
afternoon.

Very gusty northwest winds will arrive Monday morning as the
low pressure departs to the north. Sustained winds of 25-35mph
are possible, with gusts 50-55mph. A few gusts to 60mph at the
higher ridgetops. A High Wind Warning will be issued from early
Monday morning through Monday evening for the Blue Ridge.

A second wave of upslope moisture will arrive Monday afternoon
as a strong upper wave quickly drops out of Canada behind the
departing low. A reinforcing shot of moisture will arrive, along
with cold temperatures to enhance the upslope snow across the
western mountains. A burst of snow is not out of the question
for as far east as the Blue Ridge on Monday evening as the front
passes.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 500 AM EST Sunday...

Key Messages:

1: Strong northwesterly winds are expected for Monday into Tuesday
afternoon, with gusts of 30 to locally 45 mph expected on Monday,
up to 55 mph across the higher ridges.

2: Upslope snow showers will bring accumulating snowfall to the
mountains by Tuesday morning, especially the ridges from southeast
West Virginia through the Highlands of North Carolina.

3: High pressure will arrive Tuesday afternoon, bring an end to snow
and strong winds.

Monday will start off with low pressure along the North Carolina/
Virginia coast, leaving northwesterly windflow established across
the central Appalachians into the Piedmont. With widespread rainfall
out of our area by this point, the main weather hazards transition
to 1) strong northwesterly wind gusts and 2) upslope snow shower
accumulations along the higher ridges from southeast West Virginia
through northwest North Carolina (hereafter referred to as the
western ridges).

Given the passage of a surge of energy overhead to start the day, we
will begin the morning with strong winds already occurring across
the region, with gusts ranging from 30 mph to 45 mph, though the
higher ridges such as the crest of the Blue Ridge can expect gusts
to 55 mph. These gusts will diminish somewhat toward lunchtime as
the main energy begins to move away, however gusty winds will remain
an issue for the lower Mid-Atlantic through Tuesday afternoon before
high pressure settle over the area. As such, a wind advisory is
being issued from 7PM this evening through Tuesday afternoon.

With the northwest winds come the upslope snow showers as cooler air
is drawn across the mountains. Through Monday morning, may see some
of residual rain showers change over to snow along the western
ridges, but am not confident there will be much, if any,
accumulation. That will change during Monday afternoon however as
the leading edge of a cold upper level trough and associated cold
front begins to pass across the mountains. This will bring
significantly colder air across the western Ridges, along with a
surge of moisture off of Lake Michigan to support efficient mountain
snow shower activity that will persist into the early morning hours
of Tuesday. By dawn Tuesday, the highest accumulations will occur
across western Greenbrier County, with a 70+% probability of
reaching a winter storm total of at least 6 to 8 inches of snow. The
remainder of the western ridges will receive 1 to locally 4 inches,
again with the greater totals most likely occurring along the higher
terrain above 3,000 feet. From there, amounts will taper downward
further eastward as the precipitation diminishes in the downslope
windflow. A dusting will be possible along the crest of the Blue
Ridge, and won't be surprised to hear reports of flakes flying with
no accumulations across the foothills.

By Tuesday, the base of the cold upper level trough will pass across
the Appalachian chain, bringing the coldest daytime temperatures of
the week as highs range from the mid 20s to the low 30s across the
mountains, and the mid to upper 30s across the Piedmont. However,
snow shower activity and gusty northwest winds will both come to an
end by early afternoon as high pressure begins to settle across the
region.

The upper trough will exit the region Tuesday night, and after a
chilly start to Wednesday morning, with lows in the teens to the low
20s, abundant sunshine will allow afternoon temperatures to rebound
into the 40s areawide.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

1: Benign weather expected through the period.

2: Temperatures will moderate to near normal values.

3: There is a low probability of showers developing for next weekend.

High pressure will remain over the lower Mid-Atlantic through the
second half of next week, resulting in a mixture of clouds and
sunshine and generally light winds. And with broad upper level
ridging becoming established for the period, the region can expect
temperatures to return to near-normal for the later half of
December.

Will be keeping an eye on the next potential for precipitation that
will begin developing across the central Plains region during late
Friday. A warm front passing north across the Tennessee Valley may
trigger a few showers that affect the mountains, though confidence
on any precipitation for our region remains low this far out in
time.

As of 125 PM EST Sunday...

Anticipate IFR to LIFR conditions this afternoon and tonight
with ceilings and visibilities lowering in widespread moderate
rain at all terminals. Easterly winds will be gusty over and
west of the mountains through the afternoon associated to a
strong low level jet. Winds will become northeasterly during
the afternoon across the entire region, then trend north by
northwest tonight and increase in speed. Gusts 15 to 25 kts are
expected today, then 20 to 30 kts tonight.

Winds continue to increase and continue from the northwest
Monday morning with some gusts 50kts+ along the Blue Ridge from
Boone (TNB) to Roanoke (ROA). Winds sustained 25 to 35 kts.
Eastern terminals likely to return to VFR, but areas along and
east of the Blue Ridge will still contend with upslope clouds
with sub VFR/MVFR cigs at BLF/LWB, along with passing rain/snow
showers that may briefly reduce vsby.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK...

Gusty winds are expected through Tuesday, with even higher
speeds for the ridges. Upslope clouds and snow will continue for
the western mountains into Tuesday as well which may produce
sub-VFR at times.

We should see a return to VFR for the mountains by late
Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will be VFR everywhere.
