.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front lifts north today. Strong low pressure pushing
into the Great Lakes this afternoon into tonight will sweep a
cold front across our region by this evening. Strong gusty winds
and showers will accompany the front, with wind continuing
into Tuesday morning. Milder temperatures should carry us into
Thursday with the next front bring more showers Wednesday night into
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 244 AM EST Monday...

     Showers This Afternoon/Evening With Strong Post-Frontal Winds...

Warm front expected to gradually lift north today with a little bit
of rain along/ahead of it, but as we head into the afternoon cold
front approaches with showers. Mainly will be stable with the lack
of any CAPE, but some low topped storms could bring strong gusty
winds to the WV mountains this evening.

The big concern will be the wind, especially as the front moves
across, as models all showing 50-65kt jet at 8h and forecast
soundings have potential mixing up to this layer behind the front,
though we are lacking in cold advection and pressure rises. With
such a dynamic system and with showers potentially surging the winds
as well, will have a wind advisory for along/west of the Blue Ridge
this evening into overnight. Strongest surge looks to be in the
midnight to dawn Tuesday time frame. Some potential for gusts over
60 mph in the highest elevations above 4000 ft in the Grayson
Highlands and NC mtns but may be too short lived and isolated for a
high wind warning at this time.

Highs today will be cooler in the north where clouds linger longer
ahead of the warm front, with upper 40s to mid 50s from the
Greenbrier Valley/Alleghanys to Lynchburg. Further south looking at
mid 50s to lower 60s.

Showers should exit from southwest to northeast starting this
evening in southwest VA/northwest NC, exiting the piedmont by around
or shortly after midnight. Some lingering upslope showers into
the overnight across the WV mtns before drying out before dawn
Tuesday.

With the winds and lack of strong cold advection, lows tonight will
be in the 40s for most areas, maybe even some lower 50s across the
NC piedmont.

Forecast confidence is high on winds and temperatures, and average
on sky cover and pops.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 305 AM EST Monday...

 Dry and quiet into Wednesday, then rain Wednesday night into
Thursday...

The 500mb pattern stays mostly zonal over the eastern US
through this forecast period, while an upper level trough
deepens over the western half of the US and moves into the
southern Plains by the end of the week. At the surface, high
pressure will become situated over the northeast, and spread
southward into the Mid Atlantic. This will lead to a couple days
of dry weather through later Wednesday. Winds will start to
lighten as the pressure gradient and cold air advection behind
the front decrease.

A surface front looks to cross the central Appalachians by later
Wednesday, which will bring the next round of precipitation to the
area for Wednesday night. Another cold front approaches the area by
Thursday, and rain chances will continue along and ahead of this
front. Although shear is fairly high, instability looks more over
the southeastern US. Therefore, at this time, not expecting much
chance for thunder, although that may change depending on the
movement of the front. So while this forecast period began dry, it
will end rainy, as March comes in like a lion.

High temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s for areas west of
the Blue Ridge, and upper 60s to possibly low 70s for areas in the
Piedmont, given the zonal flow aloft and surface high pressure.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 320 AM EST Monday...

   Rain to end the week, dry for the weekend...

An upper level trough is progged to move northeastward from the
southern Plains into the Great Lakes region through the end of the
week. The surface low pressure and frontal system will also move
northeastward, tracking from the lower Midwest into the northeast US
by the weekend. The associated warm front first will lift northward
across the area through Friday, which will bring more rain to the
area late Thursday and through Friday. The cold front looks to move
across the central Appalachians by the end of the week, and will
bring some colder air to the region. If the cold air can reach the
area quick enough to catch the precipitation, some upslope snow
showers are possible for the western slopes of the mountains. The
precipitation looks to end by midday Saturday, as surface high
pressure builds back into the area, bringing the return of dry
weather for the weekend.

Winds will increase again through Friday ahead of the front as a
strong mid level jet approaches the area, and could approach
advisory criteria. similar to the front discussed in the short term
forecast period, wind shear will be high, but CAPE, and therefore
instability, looks to be further south of the area, so not expecting
much severe potential at this time. However, that could change
depending on the movement and position of the front.

With the brief cooldown courtesy of the colder air behind the
frontal passage, highs for Saturday and Sunday will be in the low to
mid 40s west of the Blue Ridge, and low to mid 50s east.

.AVIATION /11Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 613 AM EST Monday...

Should start to see ceilings lower this morning, but BLF. Expect
the rest of the terminals to lower through the late morning to
MVFR BCB/LWB/ROA by 16z, with low end VFR east. Cannot rule out
a passing shower from BCB/ROA to LWB. As warm front lifts north
this afternoon, followed quickly by a cold front, anticipate
fluctuations in ceilings and visibilities. South winds to turn
to the southwest and gust to 20-30kts along/ahead of the front.
Looking at best shower chances this afternoon/evening northwest
of a line from UKF-LYH. Showers could sink vsbys to high end
IFR.

Models are hitting winds hard tonight after frontal passage
with a 50-65kt low level jet. West winds could gust up to 35 to
45kts along/west of the Blue Ridge, but not as much in LYH/DAN.

Still expect poor flying conditions for most of this taf period
due to lower ceilings and showers early to choppy gusty winds
after 22z. All terminals will go VFR tonight, earliest from ROA
to BCB, then LYH/DAN/LWB and BLF.

Average confidence in ceilings and vsbys, and higher confidence
on winds.

Extended Aviation Outlook...

Strong gusty west to northwest winds will continue into Tuesday
morning. VFR for Tuesday through Wednesday.

Another low pressure system will track across the Mississippi
Valley Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring a chance of
precipitation and MVFR or lower conditions late Wednesday and
Thursday ahead of the cold front. MVFR/IFR showers are likely on
Friday.
