.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)

Key messages:

1) Very strong winds will combine with very low humidity values to
produced very dangerous fire weather conditions across the Plains
Thursday.

2) Southwest winds, gusting in excess of 50 mph are expected.

3) A quick shot of moderate to heavy snow will fall along the
Continental Divide starting Thursday afternoon.

Currently...satellite imagery shows an upper storm system over
Central California, with southwesterly flow spreading into western
Colorado.  This has led to mid and high level cloud cover across the
state.  At the surface, low level easterly flow has keep
temperatures cool, with mostly 50s.  A few areas along the lee
slopes of the Eastern Mountains into the Raton Mesa are in the mid
60s.

Rest of today and tonight...the upper level storm system will slowly
begin to shift eastward into the Great Basin overnight.  Southwest
flow aloft will continue to increase through the overnight hours,
with continued periods of mid and high cloud cover.  Temperatures on
the Plains will be tricky, as a weak surface low develops and tracks
southeast across the Plains.  Continued easterly low level flow will
allow temperatures to drop into the upper 20s to near 30 along and
north of Highway 50, while westerly downsloping flow will keep lows
in the upper 30s to lower 40s south of Highway 50.

Thursday...the upper storm system will continue to track eastward
into Utah through the afternoon hours.  An upper jet will begin to
impact the region, with strong mixing expected by mid to late
morning.  This will spread very strong winds across the region.
Mountain areas will likely see gusts near 75 mph, while lower
elevations of the San Luis Valley see gusts near 65 mph.  Areas
along the I-25 corridor, south along the New Mexico border will
likely see gusts in excess of 60 mph.  For Otero, Crowley, Bent,
Prowers and Kiowa counties, winds will likely remain sub-high wind
criteria, with gusts near 50 mph.  A couple of rogue gusts near 60
mph cannot be ruled out for these counties.  These strong winds
will likely produce widespread blowing dust, which will lead to
hazardous travel conditions on local highways by reducing
visibility.  In addition, strong cross winds will produce hazardous
travel conditions on north-south highways including I-25.  Light
weight and high profile vehicles could tip over.

Very dangerous to extreme fire danger is also expected.  Very dry
air will work across the Plains, with humidity values falling under
10 percent.  These humidity values, combined with the very strong
winds and dry fuels will lead to the dangerous to extreme fire
danger.  Any outdoor burning should be postponed until another day,
and people should avoid anything that could cause a spark.

Snow will move into the Continental Divide by mid to late morning
and continue through the afternoon.  Snow could be moderate to heavy
at times, with snow accumulations through the afternoon of 2 to 4
inches.  The heaviest snow is expected over the San Juan Range.
Strong winds will also produce widespread blowing and drifting snow
which will produce low visibility and hazardous travel conditions.
Weak instability, could lead to a few snow squalls, further
impacting travel along the Continental Divide.

Temperatures for Thursday will be quite mild with upper 40s to low
50s across the San Luis Valley.  Highs on the Plains will warm into
the mid 60s to upper 70s, with the warmest conditions near the

Key Messages:

1) Critical fire weather conditions are expected for Friday
afternoon across our plains, with spotty near critical conditions
possible in the San Luis Valley as well.

2) Above normal temperatures and critical fire weather conditions
continue through the weekend and into next week.

Thursday Night and Friday..

Light snow showers continue across the Continental Divide for most
of Thursday night, and slowly come to an end through Friday morning.
Westerly downsloping winds remain elevated through the overnight
hours on Thursday night, keeping temperatures slightly warmer for
most of our mountain adjacent plains. A longwave trough axis passes
overhead throughout Friday morning, bringing dry northwesterly flow
to the area by Friday afternoon. With this pattern, the main concern
for Friday will continue to be critical fire weather conditions.
Relative humidity values are expected to fall into the single digits
across the plains, with gusty northwesterly winds remaining in place
throughout max heating. Another area of possible concern will be the
San Luis Valley, where fuels have been deemed critical, and winds
are expected gust up to 45 mph. Current thinking is that relative
humidity values will remain in the upper teens with the trough axis
passing earlier in the day, but this area could still see spotty
near critical fire weather conditions on Friday afternoon. Daytime
highs will be near normal for most, with upper 50s to mid 60s across
the plains and 40s through the mountain valleys. Have brought highs
on our plains up a few degrees from NBM forecast for Friday
afternoon based on new high res guidance, with strong downsloping
and clear skies likely helping us to warm more efficiently. Areas of
blowing dust could reduce visibility on our plains for Friday
afternoon as well.

Saturday and Sunday..

Our flow becomes more and more zonal throughout Saturday and into
Sunday, sparking a warming and drying trend that is likely to
continue well into next week. High temperatures are expected to warm
into the upper 60s and low 70s on our plains for Saturday, with mid
to upper 70s possible by Sunday. A few of us could even see 80s,
especially through the lower Arkansas River Valley. With continued
gusty southwesterly and westerly winds and very dry air in place,
critical fire weather conditions are expected to continue for both
afternoons across our plains, and could be possible through the San
Luis Valley as well.

Monday Onwards..

As a low pushes into the Pacific Northwest, our flow aloft becomes
southwesterly throughout Monday. This will likely lead to another
day or two of warm and dry conditions for Monday, and possibly into
Tuesday, depending on timing with the trough pushing through.
Ensemble guidance suggests that most meaningful precipitation from
this system will stay north of us, but we could potentially see some
precip for our mountains and potentially on our plains as well,
especially north of highway 50. Either way, looks like we'll see a
bit of a cool down and hopefully some moisture recovery/a break from
fire weather concerns for a couple days towards the middle of next
week.

passing mid and high clouds.  A few wind gusts of 25 to 30 kts are

Critical fire weather conditions are expected on Thursday over the
Interstate 25 corridor and eastern plains with windy conditions
and low daytime humidities. Damaging winds are possible over the
southeast mountains, southern Interstate 25 corridor, and
southern portions of the plains. On Friday, there is the threat
for critical fire weather conditions over the Interstate 25
corridor and much of the eastern plains. The threat for some
critical fire weather conditions continues into the weekend over
the Interstate 25 corridor and eastern plains.

Snow is anticipated Thursday into Friday over the Continental
Divide region. Light to moderate accumulations are possible.
