.SYNOPSIS...
A closed low will linger across northern New England today,
then meander there through at least Thursday. A cold front will
move across the area today, with several weaker surface troughs
through the rest of the week. This low will begin moving to the
northeast Friday and away from the area, before high pressure
moves to our south later Friday into Saturday. A cold front is
then expected to approach the region later Sunday into Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
SPC has introduced a Marginal Risk for severe weather this
afternoon for wind. In addition to their outlook for dry
isolated thunderstorms for our region, this increases our
concern about lightning implications for our fire weather risk
today.

Previous discussion...A closed upper low associated with the
eastern periphery of the omega block over the CONUS will remain
to our northeast through tonight. A shortwave trough will pivot
through the area this afternoon as the low retrogrades back to
the west over Maine. This will push a cold front, albeit ill-
defined, slowly through our area as the day progresses. High
pressure will then build into the Great Lakes late tonight.

While moisture will be limited, meager diurnal instability (less
than 500 J/kg) is expected to develop today in the vicinity of and
ahead of the front. Some isolated showers and perhaps a few
thunderstorms should result, especially later in the day as
instability and synoptic forcing maximize. Some gusty winds and
small hail may be possible with this activity, but no severe weather
is anticipated at this time. With the very high LCLs (8-10kft) today
and very dry near surface air, it's possible that there is some
convection that produces lightning without much if any precipitation
reaching the ground. This will have implications on the fire weather
forecast for today.

Aside from the isolated showers, smoke and haze from wildfires in
Canada will continue to spread across the skies today, especially in
the wake of the frontal passage. This activity has produced reduced
surface visibility down to around 5 miles upstream to our west and
north yesterday and through early this morning. Based on the
HRRR/RAP smoke simulations indicating this will continuing spreading
into the area today, we've kept a mention of haze in the forecast
for today and into tonight. Unfortunately, the cold front passage
today will likely only make the hazy conditions worse since the
source region of the post frontal airmass will the the region where
the Canadian wildfires are still burning. In addition to the hazy
sky and filtered sunshine, mostly cloudy conditions should develop
and accompany the frontal passage this afternoon and early evening.

This afternoon will be fairly breezy for this time of year. Expect
northwest winds around 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Winds
should remain elevated around 5-10 mph even tonight given the
gradient in place behind the front. Highs will range from the
upper 70s to low 80s. Lows tonight will be in the upper 40s to
mid 50s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure both at the surface and aloft will continue to pinwheel
across northern New England and southeast Canada through at least
Thursday night. Several short waves/vorticity impulses embedded
in the long wave trough aloft will move across the Mid Atlantic
and northeast states, along with several surface troughs. With
limited moisture (PWATs less than 1 inch), only small chances
(20-30 percent), for showers or thunderstorms are expected,
mainly for northeast Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. For
Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures will remain near or a few
degrees below normal due to the persistent trough aloft. Highs
for most locations will be in the upper 70s to near 80 on
Wednesday, then the mid 70s on Thursday. Upper 60s to low 70s
are expected at higher elevations. Low to mid 50s are expected
at night except at higher elevations where upper 40s are
forecast.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
By Friday, the persistent low pressure system aloft across northern
New England and southeast Canada begins to move to the northeast and
lose its grip on the area. The flow aloft will shift from
northwesterly on Friday, to more zonal over the weekend, before
another trough approaches by Monday of next week.

At the surface, high pressure shifts from the midwest states/Ohio
River Valley area on Friday, to the southeastern states and
offshore by Saturday and Saturday night. On Friday, there will be a
small chance of showers or thunderstorms (20-30 percent) as a short
wave/vorticity impulse moves across the area as the trough aloft
pulls away from the area. Moisture will continue to be a
limiting factor as PWATs remain less than 1 inch. Saturday is
expected to be dry for all areas though as high pressure at the
surface and zonal flow aloft keep the area precipitation free.

As we move into the Sunday into Monday time period, a frontal system
is forecast to approach the area, and depending on the
guidance, may slowly progress across the area. There will be
increasing moisture associated with this system as the flow at
the surface and aloft turn more toward the southwest. Resulting
PWATs increase to around 1.5 inches. These are indications
that a period of measurable precipitation is possible for many
places across the area during the Sunday through Monday time
period. While confidence is a bit higher in the development of a
strong surface low and resulting precipitation, given the
forecast progression in the upper level pattern, there is still
some considerable spread in the guidance in how quickly the
surface low progresses eastward. With the uncertainty in
timing, forecast PoPs have been capped somewhat and remain
around 30-50% for Sunday through Monday.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Today (until 00Z Wed)...Mainly VFR, although haze and
smoke from Canadian wildfires may briefly reduce visibility to
MVFR at times. SCT to BKN clouds the rest of this afternoon.
Latest radar shows isolated showers and thunderstorms are
developing across the Pocono Plateau moving south and east,
however coverage of this activity is expected to remain low
enough to preclude a TAF mention at this time. The main threats
with any convection will be lightning and briefly reduced
visibility. Northwest winds 10-15 kts with gusts near 20 kts.
High confidence overall, but low confidence on any restrictions
in haze.

Tonight...Mainly VFR with generally clearing skies. However, haze
may still reduce visibility to near MVFR at times. North diminishing
to northwest winds 5-10 kts. High confidence overall.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR. Northwest winds around 10 kts decreasing to 5 knots
or less at night. High confidence.

Thursday...Prevailing VFR. 20-30% chance for showers/thunderstorms,
peaking in the afternoon/evening. These may cause temporary
visibility restrictions. West-northwest winds around 10 kts, except
at KMIV/KACY where a sea breeze may turn winds more southwesterly,
particularly in the afternoon. Winds around 5 knots or less at
night. High confidence on prevailing VFR, low confidence on any
precip related restrictions.

Friday...Prevailing VFR. 20-30% chance for showers/thunderstorms,
peaking in the afternoon/evening. These may cause temporary
visibility restrictions. Northwest winds around 10 kts decreasing to
5-10 kts at night. High confidence on prevailing VFR, low confidence
on any precip related restrictions.

Saturday...VFR. West-northwest winds around 10 kts, with gusts up to
20 kts. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
No marine headlines are expected through tonight. West to southwest
winds 10-15 kts with gusts near 20 kts and seas 2-3 feet. Winds
shifting to the northwest tonight and diminishing somewhat. Hazy
conditions are expected from Canadian wildfires. There is also
potential for some isolated showers or thunderstorms this afternoon
and evening.

Outlook...

Wednesday through Saturday...No marine headlines expected. Winds
will generally be around 10 kts. Seas of 1 to 3 feet.

Rip Currents...

Today and Wednesday...There is a LOW risk for the development
of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware
beaches. Northwest winds will become west to southwesterly in
the afternoon around 15 knots on Tuesday. Expect continued off
shore flow on Wednesday, but speeds are expected to be lower.
Breaking waves will be around 2-3 feet in the surf zone with a
medium 7-8 second period easterly swell. Given the off shore
flow and lessening east swell, continue to forecast a low risk
both days.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Summary: Low daytime relative humidity near 30% or less is forecast
to persist through Thursday along with poor overnight humidity
recovery. Fuel moistures are very low, with much of the region
having not experienced a widespread wetting rainfall in over 5
weeks. This will continue to result in fire weather concerns for the
next couple days, but especially for today as breezy conditions
persist.

Details: For today, critical fire weather conditions are expected,
particularly across portions of southeastern Pennsylvania and New
Jersey, along with the chance of isolated dry thunderstorms. West to
northwest winds will be sustained around 10-15 mph with frequent
gusts around 20-25 mph. Relative humidity is forecast to fall to
around 20-30% across much of the area. Forecast high temperatures
are well into the upper 70s to low 80s across the area.

The Fire Weather Watch was upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for much
of New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, which is in effect from
11 AM to 8 PM today. Additional coordination will be needed later
this morning to determine if any fire weather danger products will
be needed for Delaware and our northeastern Maryland counties,
since the current wind forecast does not meet Red Flag criteria
for those areas.

For Wednesday and Thursday, relative humidity will continue to fall
to around 30% across the area, although winds will be notably less
around 10 mph and less gusty during the daytime hours. Overnight
humidity recovery will be poor both tonight and Wednesday night,
with forecast maximum relative humidity values around 55-65%. A
northwest breeze around 5-10 mph will also persist during the
overnight periods as well.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Coastal Flood Advisories from earlier this morning have all been
expired/cancelled as high tide has passed and coastal flood
inundation has largely diminished early this morning. Some
spotty minor flooding may linger in tidal tributaries and back
bays.

Another round of widespread minor coastal flooding is forecast
for tonight along much of the Atlantic Ocean coasts of Delaware
and New Jersey and along the back bays and tributaries for the
Little Assawoman Bay and Barnegat Bay. This round is mainly the
result of continued onshore ocean swell and still relatively
elevated astronomical tides. Therefore, Coastal Flood
Advisories are now in effect beginning at 9 PM this evening for
Ocean County south to Cape May County in New Jersey as well as
Sussex County in Delaware.

Elsewhere, along the Raritan Bay, the coasts of Monmouth
County in New Jersey, the Delaware Bay, and tidal Delaware
River, spotty minor to minor coastal flooding is forecast. The
greatest potential for widespread minor coastal flooding amongst
these areas is along the tidal Delaware River. However, as
tides along the Delaware River this morning came in lower than
previously forecast, the confidence in widespread coastal
flooding occurring tonight is relatively low. Therefore,
advisories were held off for now but may still be needed.

Coastal flooding is not expected along the Eastern Shore of the
Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

A combination of low relative humidity, breezy west to northwest

spread with any potential fire ignitions today.

Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will range from
