Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 727 PM EDT Thu Apr 6 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A strong cold front will cross our region from northwest to southeast this evening. Thunderstorms, some severe, are possible with the cold front, mainly south of the Philadelphia vicinity. Canadian high pressure will then build over the region on Friday and dominate into next week with dry weather and moderating temperatures. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/... As we approach 7 PM this evening, a cold front is pushing southeastward across eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey, and will quickly cross the rest of our area over the next several hours this evening. Winds have already begun to shift to northwesterly as far southeast as the Delaware River, though temperatures are still in the upper 70s to near 80 from Trenton to Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Allentown and Reading have already dropped into the mid 60s. Dewpoints have started to fall off as the winds shift, and in general the higher dewpoints in the low to mid 60s did not make it quite as far north as earlier anticipated. SPC RAP analysis still suggests surface-based CAPE in the 500 to 1000 j/kg range across southern NJ, but higher amounts near 2000 j/kg are staying to the south across the central Delmarva Peninsula, where we have already issued severe thunderstorm warnings for storms tracking in across Chesapeake Bay. All indications are that these storms will continue to work their way eastward across Delaware and into far southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey by 8 to 9 PM, then begin to shift east off the coast around 10 PM. The strongest activity looks like it will stay south of New Castle County (DE) and attempt to track toward Cumberland, Cape May, and Atlantic Counties (NJ), but with a bit less instability farther northeast and particularly over Delaware Bay and along the shore (due to cooler marine air), these storms should not be as strong by the time they cross southern NJ. The main hazards with these storms continue to be hail and wind, and probably more the latter over the next few hours. Farther north, while some thunderstorms are still possible up to around Philadelphia, the activity will likely be weaker. The thunderstorms should be pushing off the coasts of Delaware and far southern New Jersey around 10:00 PM. However, showers will linger into part of the overnight period from the Delaware Valley on southeastward, as a weak wave develops along the boundary. Have increased POPs there subsequently. Cool dry air at the low levels is forecast to build into our region in the wake of the front. As a result, temperatures are anticipated to drop into the upper 30s and 40s by daybreak on Friday. A fair amount of cloud cover will linger over much of our region on Friday, with even some lingering light showers, particularly across the Delmarva and southern New Jersey. A northwest wind around 10 MPH is forecast to gust to near 20 MPH. Temperatures will likely be considerably cooler than those of today. Highs should favor the 50s to near 60. && .SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... Canadian high pressure moves in Friday night through Saturday as a quiet start to the weekend is anticipated with large-scale subsidence in place. Temperatures will be below climatological normals for Saturday with mostly cloudy skies, though clouds should gradually clear out into the evening. Expecting stronger radiational cooling Saturday night with high pressure nearly overhead and with mostly clear skies, allowing overnight lows to hit or go below freezing across the higher elevations with a few places across the Pine Barrens touching freezing as well. May need some frost/freeze headlines for areas of PA/NJ where the growing season has started. High pressure remains in control Sunday with clear skies overhead. Afternoon temperatures will hover around or just below average in the mid to upper 50s. A shortwave looks to pass through the region but will do so with little to no impact on sensible weather with the surface high overhead. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Guidance continues to suggest that the long term period will be overall quiet with moderating temperatures. Both deterministic and ensemble guidance are in good agreement on the aforementioned surface high dominating our weather through the middle of next week with meridional flow aloft likely resulting in surface features remaining rather stagnant. Come Tuesday, the high may meander offshore or just to our south. Ensembles then suggest another upper wave passing through sometime Tuesday again with little significance. By mid week, rising 500 mb heights as a trough digs across the West will continue to support a warming and dry trend. Temperatures through late week will look to push above average into the 70s for highs. && .AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Into this evening...Showers and thunderstorms developing and arriving from the west and southwest. The precipitation will likely bring conditions down to MVFR or IFR for a time, especially south of the Philadelphia area. Any thunderstorms could produce wind gusts from the west to northwest of 30 to 40 knots or more. Southwest to west wind around 10 knots, becoming west to northwest with the arrival of a cold front.
