Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 348 PM EDT Thu Apr 6 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A strong cold front will approach from the west this evening. Thunderstorms, some severe, are possible with the cold front. Canadian high pressure will then build over the region on Friday and dominate into next week with dry weather and moderating temperatures. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/... A cold front was dropping southeastward into the Poconos at 3:00 PM. The boundary will continue to work its way through our region during the balance of the afternoon and this evening. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop in advance of the cold front. It appears as though the best instability and shear in our region will be across our counties on eastern Maryland, Delaware, and far southern New Jersey. As a result, the Storm Prediction Center has placed those areas under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. The watch is in effect until 10:00 PM. There could be locally damaging winds and large hail in the watch area. The thunderstorms should be pushing off the coasts of Delaware and far southern New Jersey around 10:00 PM. However, some clouds and showers are expected to linger into part of the overnight period in eastern Maryland, Delaware, and southern New Jersey as a weak wave develops along the boundary. Cool dry air at the low levels is forecast to build into our region in the wake of the front. As a result, temperatures are anticipated to drop into the upper 30s and 40s by daybreak on Friday. High clouds are expected to linger over much of our region on Friday. A northwest wind around 10 MPH is forecast to gust to near 20 MPH. Temperatures will likely be considerably cooler than those of today. Highs should favor the 50s. && .SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... Canadian high pressure moves in Friday night through Saturday as a quiet start to the weekend is anticipated with large-scale subsidence in place. Temperatures will be below climatological normals for Saturday with mostly cloudy skies, though clouds should gradually clear out into the evening. Expecting stronger radiational cooling Saturday night with high pressure nearly overhead and with mostly clear skies, allowing overnight lows to hit or go below freezing across the higher elevations with a few places across the Pine Barrens touching freezing as well. May need some frost/freeze headlines for areas of PA/NJ where the growing season has started. High pressure remains in control Sunday with clear skies overhead. Afternoon temperatures will hover around or just below average in the mid to upper 50s. A shortwave looks to pass through the region but will do so with little to no impact on sensible weather with the surface high overhead. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Guidance continues to suggest that the long term period will be overall quiet with moderating temperatures. Both deterministic and ensemble guidance are in good agreement on the aforementioned surface high dominating our weather through the middle of next week with meridional flow aloft likely resulting in surface features remaining rather stagnant. Come Tuesday, the high may meander offshore or just to our south. Ensembles then suggest another upper wave passing through sometime Tuesday again with little significance. By mid week, rising 500 mb heights as a trough digs across the West will continue to support a warming and dry trend. Temperatures through late week will look to push above average into the 70s for highs. && .AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Into this evening...Generally VFR, with showers and thunderstorms developing and arriving from the west and southwest. The precipitation will likely bring conditions down to MVFR or IFR for a time. Any thunderstorms could produce wind gusts from the west to northwest of 30 to 40 knots or more. Southwest to west wind around 10 knots, becoming west to northwest with the arrival of a cold front.
