Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure across the upper Great Lakes will shift eastward
and strengthen today. Another low pressure system will develop
off the coast and track northward toward New England by
Saturday. The low will then lift toward the Canadian Maritimes
on Sunday, followed by high pressure for next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Our morning batch of convective showers continue to gradually
move offshore with a few showers lingering along the immediate
coast. Otherwise, our brief lull in precip has arrived for the
day with the forecast remaining on track. Another round of
showers will arrive tonight as the cold front pushes through.

Previous discussion...A jet streak will dive southeast across
the Midwest today as an upper trough digs across the Great Lakes
extending down into the Carolinas and gradually obtains a
negative tilt as it does so. Two surface low pressure systems
will combine to provide unsettled weather through tonight, one
across the Great Lakes and another developing off the coast of
the Carolinas. Increasing moisture ahead of the latter will be
responsible for the showers ongoing this morning across mostly
the eastern half of the forecast area as it tracks north but
stays well offshore.

Clouds continue to stream across our region from the southwest
ahead of approaching low pressure to the west. Warm and moist
advection is ongoing courtesy of a 35 kt southerly low-level
jet which has been the driving scattered showers, with some
embedded brief heavier rainfall, mainly from I-95 and east this
morning where the higher theta-e air has advected north. Some
modest instability is still noted in hi-res forecast soundings
so some thunder and some more pockets of more briefly heavy
rainfall are possible through the morning hours. Some showers
may linger into the afternoon hours, especially along the New
Jersey coast, as left exit region jet dynamics keep large-scale
lift in place for a bit longer. Most areas west of the 95
corridor should remain mostly dry or at most see just a passing
shower.

We'll likely see a brief lull in the precipitation this
afternoon ahead of the approaching, and weakening, cold front
attached to the other low pressure system across the Great
Lakes. The upper trough will dig and become negatively tilted
which will allow the coastal low to strengthen and take over as
the primary low, though it will stay far enough offshore that
the cold front will be the forcing mechanism that drives our
second batch of showers late Friday night. Guidance is a bit
scattered on how much precipitation holds together with the
front weakening, though enough convergence along the boundary
coupled with vorticity advection and ample moisture will allow
for a batch/broken line of showers to cross the region tonight.
Some meager instability is again progged with this line of
showers, so wouldn't rule out a few rumbles of thunder and some
embedded heavier showers, though with PWATs only reaching up to
around 1", don't expect that any significant rainfall amounts
will be able to be squeezed out.

Despite the thick cloud cover, warm advection will offset the
limited insolation and highs should still reach the upper 60s to
near 70.

The front will pass through during the overnight hours Friday
night and cold advection with northwest flow ensues in its wake.
The pressure gradient will tighten as well and wind will begin
to increase towards daybreak, though we won't full realize the
gusts until turbulent mixing begins after daybreak. Lows will be
similar to those of Thursday night in the mid 50s as
temperatures won't drop significantly with the frontal passage
with the coldest air aloft not really punching in until later on
in the weekend.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure will be rapidly deepening as it moves northeastward
away from us on Saturday. The last of the showers associated
with the primary low will be moving out in the morning, but
lingering upper level energy could spark off a few more towards
midday before a mostly dry afternoon ensues. As the low rapidly
deepens, winds will be increasing, likely gusting over 30 mph by
afternoon, possibly approaching 40 mph near the coast. Despite
this, and despite lingering clouds, expect temps to rebound into
the 60s for most, 50s in the Pocs.

A secondary cold front and wave of low pressure will rotate
southeastward across the area Sunday night, possibly accompanied
by a few showers. Clouds and wind will help keep temps a bit
elevated but still expect most areas to be nearly 10 degrees
cooler than tonight, so it'll feel quite different.

A very autumnal day expected Sunday as winds pick up again after
sunrise in the wake of the secondary cold front. While we could
have some morning sun, upper level energy/cold pool likely
results in bubbling stratocumulus by afternoon, and for the
Poconos, we'll probably have some spotty showers. Temps will be
5-10 degrees cooler than Saturday, and the wind will be even a
bit stronger, perhaps gusting above 40 mph near the coast, so
it'll really feel a little more like November vs October.

High pressure tries to start building in Sunday night, but
lingering upper level trough keeps clouds and wind elevated.
Thus, while temps will drop a few more degrees compared to
Saturday night, not expecting any frost/freeze risk yet.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High pressure will be more firmly established as the day wears
on Monday, with a brief uptick in wind as mixing gets going in
the morning before a gradual decrease in the afternoon. Skies
should be fairly sunny, helping temps rebound just slightly from
Sunday's readings, but still several degrees below normal. With
the wind and more sun, it'll feel that much warmer than Sunday,
though.

High pressure will be right overhead Monday night, so that
remains the most likely widespread frost/freeze night, though
guidance continues to slide slowly upward, suggesting a little
too much mixing and modification may have taken place. Lows
mostly in the 30s to near 40.

The remainder of the week will feature the high shifting east
off the coast with a return flow as ridging builds aloft. Highs
will moderate several degrees each day with low 70s common by
Thursday. Lows will do likewise, with readings back near 50 or
above by Thursday night.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of today...Mainly VFR, but scattered showers, with some
embedded moderate rain possible mainly at KMIV/KACY, could
bring periods of MVFR visibilities. Southeast wind 8-12 knots
with gusts to 20 knots mainly at KACY. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...MVFR conditions return as showers arrive from the
west with a cold front. Periods of IFR possible. Southerly wind
around 5 knots shifting to westerly with the passage of the

Outlook...
Strengthening low pressure as it moves northeast of the area
Saturday into Sunday will result in gale potential through much
of the weekend. Gale Watches start midday Saturday for most
waters except far N Jersey Shore, where they wait until Saturday
evening. Initial burst of wind likely ends across all waters
Saturday evening, but as low pressure stalls and second front
moves thru, winds may reach gale again mainly NJ waters on
Sunday, so ran Gale Watch there straight through Sunday
afternoon. Seas will build to 4-7 ft.

High pressure then allows relaxation of conditions as we head
into the new week, with SCA conditions possibly lingering Monday
before sub-SCA conditions dominate the middle of the week.
