Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
111 AM EDT Thu Jul 27 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
A large high over the western North Atlantic will provide persistent
southwest flow with hot and humid conditions through the end of the
week. A passing disturbance will bring some thunderstorms on
Thursday, with lower storm chances Friday. A cold front will then
cross the area Saturday, with another chance of widespread showers
and storms. Significant reduction in temperature and humidity will
follow the front Sunday into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
For the early morning update, no changes were made. Watching a
weakening MCS march through PA/lower NY, and would expect the
weakening trend to continue, however a few showers are possible
in the upper Lehigh Valley/southern Poconos later this morning.
Otherwise, not a lot going on currently. A band of high clouds
should continue to spread eastward over the rest of the region
through the overnight hours, but will likely be thin enough to
have little impact on the temperatures. Low temperatures will
likely range from the upper 60s to the middle 70s with the wind
remaining from the south around 5 to 10 MPH. Given that the wind
should remain a bit more elevated than it was Wednesday
morning, the risk for fog is lower Thursday morning. However,
with dewpoints mostly in the 60s across the region, will be
watching the trends closely through the overnight hours.

Our buildup of dangerous heat for the end of the week begins
Thursday with heat indicies expected to reach 104 across the
urban corridor and much NJ and eastern PA, with the exception of
the Pocono Plateau. Southern NJ and the Delmarva are expected to
exceed even that, where heat indicies will reach 107. As a
result, Heat Advisories were extending into southern NJ and the
entire Delmarva and are now in effect for all locations with
the exception of Carbon and Monroe counties. Furthermore, there
is increasing confidence of scattered thunderstorms, or perhaps
a line of thunderstorms, to impact the region on Thursday
afternoon and/or evening. Any thunderstorms could be severe,
with damaging winds likely the main threat in addition to large
hail and heavy rainfall.

Synoptic Summary: The persistent mid level long wave trough
that has been protecting us from excessively hot temperatures is
expected to lift for the end of the week. The flow across the
northern states should become somewhat zonal and a ridge over
the western North Atlantic is forecast to retrograde a bit.
Meanwhile, a surface high off the coast will establish a south
to southwesterly flow of hot and humid air into our region. A
shortwave trough streaming through the zonal flow will bring
convection Thursday, including the potential for severe
thunderstorms.

Warm, moist advection will ensue on Thursday under southwesterly
flow through much of the column. Afternoon temperatures will
easily reach the low to mid 90s across much of the region with
heat index values 100-107 as a result of dew points climbing
into the 70s. This is considered dangerous heat and proper
precautions should be taken!

Furthermore, there is also a chance for severe thunderstorms
beginning Thursday afternoon as a mid-level shortwave runs into
the oppressive heat and humidity. Abundant MUCAPE values
1000-2000 J/kg and sufficient shear will allow for developing
thunderstorms to become severe. With DCAPE values in many
locations around 1000J/kg and favorable low-level lapse rates,
damaging wind gusts and hail will be the primary threats in
these thunderstorms. Additionally, with PWAT values reaching 2
inches in many locations, heavy downpours that could lead to
localized flooding will be another concern with these
thunderstorms. Latest hi res guidance suggests a multi-
cellular cluster of storms or a loosely organized line will
develop around mid- afternoon Thursday and sweep eastward across
the region through the evening before gradually diminishing
after sunset. The SPC will maintain a Slight Risk for severe
weather over the region. The WPC has areas along the I-95
corridor and northwest in a marginal Excessive Rainfall Outlook.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Upper shortwave will be moving through still on Thursday evening,
with best coverage of storms likely switching to areas south of
Philadelphia during the evening before ending overnight. Severe
weather and flash flood risks are present given high CAPE, modest
shear and high PW's. Lows will end up in the 70s for most.

Hottest day still looks like Friday overall, with temps into the
upper 90s for much of the area and heat indices pushing 105 for
many. Have left existing heat headlines but added advisories for the
Delmarva where 105-109 heat indices look more likely now. Guidance
does indicate some potential for isolated afternoon/evening storms
which makes sense given high CAPE but minimal forcing, so have some
slight chance POPS for later in the day.

Friday night and Saturday, next frontal boundary slides into the
area. First disturbance along it passes to the north late Friday
night into early Saturday, possibly spreading a round of showers or
storms with it, then a second push later Saturday with the main cold
front. Cloud cover looks like it may hold temps and instability back
a bit, but heat advisories may well be necessary again, and a severe
/flood risk will also be present. Highs will drop a few degrees due
to aforementioned clouds/precip potential, but still quite hot and
humid.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Cold front pushing southeast through the region Saturday evening may
result in lingering showers and storms, but these look to clear the
region overnight.

Sunday through Wednesday will feature a significant cool down as
Canadian air returns behind the strong cold front. There may be,
however, several passing weaker fronts which could result in a few
showers or storms, though timing of these is uncertain. Latest GFS
shows one of these passing Sunday night with another one Monday
night. GGEM has neither of these features but does show a
disturbance passing Wednesday. ECMWF has the Sunday night feature,
nothing significant Monday night, but another Tuesday night system.
All of these look relatively weak, so even if they occur, most of
the time will be dry with just a few relatively brief showers and
storms, but because of the great uncertainty, have generally kept
POPs mostly sub chance in the long term.

Highs will mostly be in the low-mid 80s Sunday through Wednesday
with lows in the upper 50s to 60s, a considerable change from late
this week.

.AVIATION /05Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Tonight (until 12z)...Primarily VFR. Small chance
(15-20%) of fog development around KRDG/KABE/KMIV/KACY, but not
enough to include in the TAFs. Increasing high clouds as the
night goes on, though should have no impact on operations. Winds
will generally be out of the south around 5-10 kt, though some
spots such as KMIV could decouple, with a light and variable
wind. Moderate confidence overall.

Thursday...VFR to start with potential for sub-VFR conditions
later in the day as scattered showers and thunderstorms are
expected to develop. Have moved up the timing of convection
developing near terminals-with VCTS included at KRDG/KABE
beginning at 19z, the I-95 terminals at 20z, and the South
Jersey terminals at 21z. Will monitor overnight guidance to nail
down any specific impacts but thunderstorm chances remain around
40-50% at each terminal. Winds will be out of the south around
10-15 kt with gusts 20-25 kt. Moderate confidence overall.

Thursday Night...Primarily VFR. Showers/Thunderstorms clear out
between 01z-03z. Slight chance of some patchy fog developing but
most, if not all, terminals should stay VFR. Winds will be out
of the southwest around 5 kt or less. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Friday...Prevailing VFR. A few isolated showers and thunderstorms
possible in the afternoon. Southwesterly wind 10-15 knots with gusts
to 20 knots. Moderate confidence.

Saturday...Primarily VFR. A few scattered showers and thunderstorms
with the passage of cold front. West to northwesterly wind 10-15
knots with gusts to 20 knots. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...VFR. Northwest to north winds around 10 kts. High
confidence.

Monday...VFR. Northwest to north winds around 10 kts. High
confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Southerly winds around 10 to 15 knots tonight will lead to
building seas of 3 to 4 feet tonight. Waves on Delaware Bay are
anticipated to be 2 feet or less.

Marine conditions will deteriorate Thursday with a Small Craft
Advisory in effect for the Atlantic coastal waters from 8 AM
through 4 AM. Southerly winds ramp up to 15-25 kts early in the
morning with gusts up to 30 kts in the afternoon. Seas build to
4-8 feet. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon
and evening. Winds and seas ramp back down overnight Thursday
below Small Craft Criteria.

Outlook...

Friday...SCA conditions possible with southerly sustained winds of
15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots. Seas 3-5 feet.

Saturday...SCA conditions possible with southwest to westerly
sustained winds of 10-15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots. Scattered
thunderstorms possible. Seas 3-5 feet.

Sunday and Monday...No marine headlines anticipated. Northerly winds
10-15 kts. Seas 2-3 feet. Fair weather.

Rip Currents...

Given forecasted elevated seas and an underlying long period
swell at the Delaware Beaches and southern Jersey Shore, the
forecasted risk for the development of rip currents is MODERATE
on Thursday. Seas should decrease on Friday, so at this point it
looks as if most areas will see a LOW risk on Friday, except for
the shore in Cape May and Atlantic Counties, where the wind will
be slightly more on shore. In those two counties, a MODERATE
risk may continue on Friday.
