.SYNOPSIS...Monday will feature a chilly morning followed by mild
afternoon conditions. A major shift in the weather pattern will
occur on Tuesday with much colder temperatures, strong and gusty
winds, chances for precipitation and lowering snow levels. Cold and
unsettled conditions will impact the region through the end of the
week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:45 PM PST Sunday...A ridge of high
pressure continues to build inland over northern California early
this afternoon with a few passing high clouds. This has allowed
for the subtle warming trend to continue with temperatures already
warming into the mid/upper 60s across the interior with isolated
pockets expected to reach the lower 70s. Temperatures overnight
will again cool into the mid/upper 30s in the coldest coastal and
interior locations with lower 40s elsewhere. Afternoon conditions
on Monday will be similar to Sunday with widespread 60s and even
lower 70s in the warmest interior areas.

For the remainder of the week: windy, cold and wet! On Tuesday, a
long-wave trough over western Canada will drop into the Pacific
Northwest and then across northern and central California. In wake
of the frontal passage, strong and gusty northerly winds will
develop along with plummeting temperatures with many areas reaching
their daytime high by mid-to-late morning or early afternoon. Winds
will be strongest along the coast and in the coastal ranges where
gusts greater than 45 mph are expected. Strong and gusty winds will
continue into Wednesday night before gradually diminishing over
inland areas. As the cold air mass settles into the region, daytime
temperatures will struggle to warm out of the upper 40s to lower 50s
while the higher peaks and ridges remain in the 30s. Additionally,
the probability of sub-freezing temperatures continues to increase
for just about all interior areas with 30s even near the coast/bays
for the second half of the week. Much of this and the potential for
record breaking temperatures will depend on wind, cloud cover,
moisture and ongoing precipitation over the region.

Speaking of precipitation, both deterministic and ensemble guidance
suggest the first round of rain showers will impact the coastal
ranges from Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snow levels during this
time will drop to below 2,000 feet across much of the region with
snow showers likely to develop in elevations above. Meanwhile,
little (generally <0.10") precipitation is expected further inland
through Wednesday. Precipitation chances increase to between 40-80%
region-wide from Thursday into Friday as a stronger mid/upper level
short-wave shifts inland over the Central Coast. Latest trends
continue to focus the heaviest precipitation to occur along the
coastal ranges from the Santa Cruz Mountains southward across the
Santa Lucia Range. With snow levels remaining near or below 2,000
feet, snow accumulations are likely (60-90%) in the Santa Cruz
Mountains, Santa Lucia, southern Diablo, and Gabilan ranges as well
as the Sierra De Salinas. Confidence on how much snow will fall
remains in question, yet there is a low to moderate (30-50%)
potential for the highest peaks of the Central Coast to pick up more
than 12" of snowfall through Friday. The higher elevations of the
North Bay and East Bay can expect lower snow accumulations with a
dusting in elevations as low as 1,500 feet. As far as liquid
precipitation goes, much of the interior parts of the Bay Area can
expect generally less than 0.25" with between 0.50-0.75" for coastal
areas of the Central Coast. With this, widespread flooding concerns
are not anticipated with this event.

All of this said, the forecast beyond Monday features high
confidence for much colder temperatures with low-to-medium
confidence with regards to the details surrounding precipitation
type and amounts. Folks are urged to stay up-to-date on the latest
forecast information in the coming days and begin to prepare for
several days of cold, unsettled weather.

.AVIATION...as of 3:41 PM PST Sunday...For the 00Z TAFs. Onshore
winds are beginning to pick up across the region with maximum speeds
of 8-10knots expected before easing later into Sunday evening. Winds
remain light from late Sunday evening through Monday afternoon when
the next round of stronger onshore winds begin. Skies remain clear
but for a few high clouds towards the end of the TAF period.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR through the TAF period. Current onshore winds
at SFO will reach speeds of about 10knots before diminshing
towards 06Z Monday. Afterwards, winds expected to remain light
until the next onshore winds with speeds of up to 10knots begin
late Monday afternoon. Current satellite imagery shows clear skies
for the area but for some passing high clouds. This will be the
trend through the end of the TAF period.

KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay...VFR through the TAF period. Wind are currently from
the NW at around 10knots, and satellite is showing clear skies.
These clear skies will persist through Monday evening, with high
clouds occasionally making their way in. SE drainage winds return to
KSNS tonight which will bring speeds of up to 8knots from around 09Z
Monday until 14Z, after which winds diminish and become lighter.

.MARINE...as of 03:59 PM PST Sunday...Mostly light to moderate
northerly winds through Monday afternoon, except for continued
strong winds over the far northern outer  waters. Light northwest
swell is decaying with new, longer period  northwest swell
arriving later this evening. Winds begin to increase Monday night
ahead of a strong cold front, which arrives Tuesday. An impactful
storm system is expected to arrive later  Tuesday into Wednesday
that will likely produce rain over the  waters as well as strong,
potentially gale force wind gusts. Steep hazardous seas are
expected for the second half of the week.
