.SYNOPSIS...Warm and sunny for the Monday holiday. Strong wind
gusts increase on Tuesday ahead of the next storm system resulting
in a Wind Advisory being issued. Cold temperatures, increasing
rain chances, and lowering snow levels will accompany this storm
system and impact the Bay Area and the Central Coast through
Saturday morning.

.DISCUSSION...as of 03:00 AM PST Monday...With random patches of
high clouds passing over the region, winds remain light and
temperatures are running 2 to 5 degrees warmer this morning than
24 hours previously. This trend will continue into Monday
afternoon as temperatures will warm into the 60s, with interior
North Bay valleys having a 40 to 60 percent chance of reaching
into the 70s. Meanwhile, the immediate coastline will likely be
limited to the upper 50s. All in all, in the most subjective way,
Monday looks to be a really nice day to be outside. Or should it
be, relative to what is coming on Tuesday.
A robust, cold airmass is expected to descend southward into
California on Tuesday. The long wave trough will set up shop and
remain over Central California through Saturday. A shortwave
trough at 500 mb will accompany the arrival and pass through,
exiting to the east by Wednesday. The second shortwave will
travel down Thursday afternoon and drop 500 mb heights to below
530 dam which is -2.4 to -3 sigma lower than normal based on both
Euro and GFS ensemble models proving just how anomalous this air
mass is.
This system will be dynamic and providing several impacts to the
Bay Area and the Central Coast: strong wind gusts, cold
temperatures, rain, snow, and even the slight chance for a
thunderstorm.
Winds will start to increase Tuesday morning as the system
approaches and increase in magnitude through Tuesday evening.
Gale Watches have been issued over the waters as gusts greater
than 35 knots is expected on Wednesday. A Wind Advisory has been
issued for all counties in the CWA from Sonoma County southward
down to Monterey County. Winds are expected to gust between 35 to
45 mph with highest peaks and ridges with the chance to exceed 55
mph. Winds are not forecast to subside until Thursday morning.
Starting on Tuesday afternoon, max temperatures will struggle to
reach even the low 60s. Those that do reach 60 degrees can be
considered lucky to see it one more time because between
Wednesday through Friday, afternoon high temperatures are
expected to be in the low 50s, with many interior areas remaining
in the 40s. But the far more impactful outcome to these
temperatures will be how cold it gets overnight and into the
morning hours. Widespread interior areas will reach the mid 30s,
with only the coastal and bay shoreline areas remaining in the
low 40s. Thursday and Friday mornings, widespread temperatures in
the 30s with interior valley areas seeing 30 to 50 percent chance
for dropping below 32 Fahrenheit, and those probabilities jump to
70 to 90 percent for the interior East Bay, North Bay, and
Southern Salinas Valleys. Chilly temperatures remain through the
weekend and not start to leave the 30s until Sunday and Monday
next week. This period of time will be exceptionally impactful to
the more vulnerable populations around the region, especially
those without access to an adequate shelter.
Rain will also accompany this system but, to put a positive spin
on it, it looks to remain fairly light. Between Wednesday and
Saturday morning, the total rainfall amounts around the Bay Area
and the Salinas Valley would be 0.75 to 1.00 inches, with the
higher elevations of Santa Cruz Mountains seeing 1 to 2 inches,
locally up to 3 inches and the Santa Lucia Range 1 to 3 inches,
locally higher. But it is important to remember that the rainfall
totals are spread out across three days. There will be periods of
breaks in the rain across the days, but for the most part, most
models are keeping rain rates fairly light to occasionally
moderate. It should also be noted that instability and steeper
lapse rates will accompany the system as well, particularly
Thursday afternoon into Friday, which means that the slight chance
for thunder and maybe some small hail is not out of the picture
with this system. Confidence remains low on the thunder risk, but
will be monitored closely.
Lastly, and it has generated a lot of buzz on social media, the
chance for snowfall. The highest confidence remains in elevations
greater than 1500 feet seeing snow. While the airmass aloft will
be exceptionally cold, as will most morning temperatures, the
afternoon day time temperatures will still be mostly above
freezing which keeps the skepticism around. What makes
forecasting snow so challenging is not having a firm grasp what
the snow to liquid water ratio (and better known acronym SLR)
will be for system - and of course it rarely stays static through
an event. Higher SLRs result in snow totals in the Santa Lucia's
over 24 inches between Wednesday and Saturday. Reduce the ratio
and end up seeing a less than 2 percent chance of snow over 12
inches and only a 20 percent chance over 4 inches. For now,
confidence remains in the North and East Bay higher elevations to
receive only light dustings with the Santa Cruz Mountains and the
Santa Lucia range the best chance to receive higher accumulations
that could eclipse the 12 inch mark. This is mainly due to the
strong winds over the ocean that can help release surface fluxes
more readily and allow convective processes to prevail because of
the relationship to the cold air mass aloft. That in addition to
the upslope flow right next to the source of moisture, the ocean.
To recap, this is a dynamic system that will impact the area from
Tuesday afternoon through Saturday morning with multiple hazards.
It is encouraged to enjoy the Monday holiday, but also
recommended to prepare for the upcoming unsettled conditions.
Ensemble models are depicting the system start to move eastward
on Saturday, slowly. Morning lows will still be chilly and
afternoon temperatures will only gradually climb into the upper
50s by Sunday. This far out in time, there is an outside chance
for lingering showers to be present, but most models are
suggesting drier conditions over the weekend. However, the active
weather pattern does not just up and leave. Cluster analysis of
ensemble models support the Climate Prediction Center's outlook
keep the probability of above normal precipitation at 60 to 70
percent 8 to 14 days from now as well as 80 to 90 percent chance
for below normal temperatures. Winter is not quite done with the
Bay Area just yet.

.AVIATION...as of 3:20 AM PST Monday...For the 12Z TAFs.
Predominantly VFR throughout the TAF period. Confidence in fog at
STS has lowered, and development of fog at STS is currently not
expected for the rest of the night. A generally northwest flow
will develop today, with wind speeds around 10 knots at the main
terminals. Strong northwesterly winds aloft will spread across the
region overnight, creating LLWS concerns at STS and other areas
within the North Bay after midnight. Then, winds at the surface
begin to strengthen as a system moves through the region. The
strongest winds will not develop until after the TAF period ends.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR throughout the TAF period. Light winds until
the afternoon when northwesterly flow develops, with speeds up to 12
knots. Winds diminishing during the evening with a low confidence
(10-20% probability) of fog or low stratus early Tuesday morning.
Westerly winds develop again around 12Z Tuesday, with a shift to a
more northwest flow after sunrise accompanied by a rise in wind
gusts to approach 30 knots in the morning, peaking beyond the TAF
period at around 40-45 knots Tuesday afternoon and evening.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR for the rest of the day with a
moderate northwesterly flow at around 10 knots. A 30% probability
of low stratus developing at MRY as the TAF period ends, although
current model output suggests that the most impactful ceilings
would occur in the hours shortly after the TAF period ends. On
Tuesday afternoon, expect northwesterly wind gusts around 30-35
knots.

.MARINE...as of 02:48 AM PST Monday...Gusty winds continuing over
the northern outer waters with light to moderate northerly winds
continuing south of Point Arena through the afternoon. Light
northwest swell decays with a new, longer period northwest swell
currently arriving. Winds beginning to increase Monday night ahead
of a strong cold front arriving Tuesday. An impactful storm
system expected to arrive later Tuesday into Wednesday that will
likely produce rain over the waters and strong, gale force wind
gusts. Steep hazardous seas are expected for the second half of
the week.
