.SYNOPSIS...Light rain over the region will diminish through Monday
afternoon with a period of drier conditions later in the day. A
stronger storm system will bring wind and rain impacts to the region
from late Monday night into Tuesday with rain showers lingering into
Wednesday. Cool and unsettled weather pattern will continue into the
upcoming weekend, yet drier conditions are expected.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:11 AM PDT Monday...Uncertainty in the wind
speeds tomorrow morning remains significant as model output varies
on the strength and placement of a surface low that is expected to
bring the highest gusts to the coast. 12Z extended run of the
HRRR placed the low close to the Monterey-San Luis Obispo county
line, but the 6z extended HRRR run placed the low closer to the
San Mateo Peninsula before weakening and coming ashore near Marin
county. based on this uncertainty, the Wind Advisory was extended
to cover the rest of the Bay Area valleys, excepting the North
Bay. Potential exists for higher wind gusts in the Central Coast,
especially the higher elevations, but confidence is not high
enough to point out specific areas at this time. Will monitor
further model output to refine forecasts and issue a High Wind
Warning, if warranted.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:33 AM PDT Monday...Boundary layer
conditions remain very moist as zonal flow persists aloft in wake
of yesterdays passing system. In addition, a weak short-wave
trough is approaching the Pacific Northwest and northern
California coastline at this hour. As such, light precipitation is
being reported over much of the region with generally trace
amounts up to a few hundredths of an inch per hour. These
conditions have held temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s
region-wide with additional cooling expected through sunrise,
especially over the North Bay where conditions are beginning to
clear out, even if ever so slightly.
Short-range guidance indicates light rain will gradually diminish in
coverage through the morning with mostly dry conditions anticipated
this afternoon. Even with some breaks in the clouds, daytime
temperatures will only warm into the mid/upper 50s to lower 60s.
Cloud cover will begin to increase late tonight as a deeper plume of
atmospheric moisture begins to advect inland across central
California. Meanwhile, a mid/upper level trough and associated low
pressure system will drop southward out of the Gulf of Alaska and
move toward central California through Tuesday. As such, light to
moderate rain will develop late tonight offshore and then spread
inland over the Bay Area and Central coast through Tuesday morning.
By about sunrise on Tuesday, rain will increase in coverage and
intensity with a 10-20% probability of isolated thunderstorms,
mainly over the Central Coast. As this occurs, surface low pressure
is forecast to deepen and then move inland somewhere between the San
Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast. This will result in strong and
gusty winds of up to 45 mph, especially south of the center of the
low pressure system. Depending on the exact track and strength of
the system, wind gusts have the potential (30-50%) to exceed 50-60
mph in areas from the Santa Cruz Mountains inland into the East Bay
Hills/Diablo Range and southward. Thus, a Wind Advisory is in effect
for the aforementioned areas from 7 AM - 9 PM Tuesday. These winds
will result in an increased potential for downed tree limbs, trees
and powerlines resulting in isolated to scattered power outages.
Again, the greatest concern for wind impacts will be south of the
San Francisco Bay Area, yet this remains highly dependent on the
exact track. Thus, folks are urged to remain up-to-date on the
latest forecast information during the next 24-36 hours.
Lingering rain showers will continue into Wednesday as the core of
the mid/upper level system pushes inland. Rainfall from late tonight
into Wednesday is forecast to range from 0.50-1.00" over much of the
North Bay with up to 2.00" in the interior hills/mountains. For the
San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Coast, expect 0.50-1.25"
amounts with up to 2.00" along the coast and in the inland hills.
Rainfall totals through this time will be greatest in the Santa Cruz
Mountains with 1.00-3.00" and 2.00-4.00" in the Santa Lucia Range.
As with the wind concerns, minor shifts in the track of this system
will result in the potential for significant changes in the
wind/rain impacts. All this said, widespread flooding concerns
should be limited given the forecast rainfall amounts, especially
with respect to mainstem river flooding. However, minor urban and
small stream flooding is expected during the time of heaviest
rainfall (greatest potential during morning rush hour commute on
Tuesday).
Beyond Wednesday: There is high confidence in cool, unsettled
conditions continuing through late week and even into the upcoming
weekend. That said, there are no strong signals of widespread
precipitation until early next week. Temperatures through the rest
of the week will remain below seasonal averages with colder
overnight and early morning temperatures by late in the week and
into the upcoming weekend as sky conditions begin to clear. Stay

.AVIATION...as of 10:15 AM PDT Monday...A mix of VFR/MVFR CIGs
will trend towards predominantly VFR this afternoon. Monday
afternoon offers light to moderate westerly winds that will reduce
into the night. The next low pressure system moves into the area
early Tuesday morning. This will bring increasing winds from the
south and east followed by moderate, to at times, heavy rain. This
system will cause shifting winds further into Tuesday with strong
winds forming aloft.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR for the day with breezy northwest winds,
diminishing tonight. Rain expected to arrive at the terminal around
12Z with a high confidence of MVFR conditions (at least 80%
probability) as the rain passes through. Easterly winds will pick up
with the storm system's arrival with gusts approaching 30 kt. As the
rain passes around 20-21Z, winds shift towards the west at around
the same strength, and moderate confidence (40-50%) that the
ceilings lift.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...MVFR CIGs linger. A return to VFR
is expected around noon. Winds will steadily turn to the west,
then south through tonight becoming gusty as the next storm
system moves into the area. Moderate, to at times of heavy, rain
will accompany the increased winds.

.MARINE...as of 09:11 AM PDT Monday...Expect the moderate winds to
decrease through much of the day, with a northwest swell
prevailing. A strong low pressure system arrives this evening and
lasts into mid week. This will bring widespread rain and strong
southerly winds especially in the southern waters and a west
swell will combine with wind wave to create high, steep seas.
