.SYNOPSIS...Scattered showers dissipating today as a frontal passage
comes through late this afternoon. Next system arrives late on
Monday with the Central Coast expected to receive up to 1-3 inches
of rainfall and highly gusty winds to 30-50 mph. Unsettled pattern
continues through the rest of the month, monitoring potential for
unseasonably low temperatures next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:08 PM PDT Sunday...Overall forecast remains
on track for the upcoming system. Of note will be the winds going
into Tuesday. The biggest impacts from the winds are still
expected to occur from the Monterey Bay southward, however seeing
a slight increase in winds at higher elevations in the southern
Bay Area. At this moment, even with a slight northward shift in
the low by high res guidance, the low would still be in an ideal
location for the greatest impacts south of the Bay Area.
Comparatively, the low associated with the Bay Area high wind
event early last week was further north and allowed for more of a
W/SW wind direction more perpendicular to the orientation of the
terrain over the SF Peninsula. This, in addition to a weak stable
layer which formed aloft, allowed for a classic downslope wind
storm setup. The favored wind direction with the upcoming event
looks to be more southerly during peak winds, which would likely
limit much in the way of strong mountain wave formation over the
SF Peninsula. However, with uncertainty still a factor, will need
to pay close attention over the next day as small shifts can have
a large impact in this scenario. Given the small adjustment in
track thus far, have expanded the Wind Advisory to include the
southern Monterey Bay, northern Salinas Valley, and the Santa Cruz
Mtns.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:33 PM PDT Sunday...Scattered showers
persist, mainly around Sonoma County, but are decreasing in
coverage and intensity as the day passes. The frontal passage has
been slightly delayed, with the latest model output suggesting the
wind shift beginning around 4 PM at the coast. Expect winds to
shift from the current southerly pattern to a more westerly flow
as the front passes through, with an associated decrease in wind
speed. High temperatures will rise to the mid 50s to low 60s in
the valleys and coastlines, with the higher elevations seeing
highs in the low to mid 40s. Lows for tomorrow morning will drop
into the mid 40s in the SF Bay Area, the interior valleys and the
coasts. North Bay valleys will see lows dropping to the low 40s,
while higher elevations drop to the low to mid 30s. Then we'll
kick off the spring equinox tomorrow with highs generally similar
to today's.
Main focus will be on the rainfall scheduled to come through late on
Monday. This is associated with an atmospheric river that's coming
through from the subtropical Pacific near Hawaii, but this time it's
not directed to the Bay Area. The main brunt of the system is
directed towards the south of us, at southern California and Baja
California in Mexico. What we will get is the fringe effects of the
atmospheric river, with the Central Coast receiving the greatest
impacts from this system, although even there, the rain totals and
wind gusts are not expected to be as strong as the systems from
earlier this month. The latest forecast update has rainfall totals
from late Monday to Wednesday for the Santa Lucia Mountains at 2 to
3 inches, with the Santa Cruz Mountains expected to receive 1.5 to 2
inches of rain and the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay coast getting
.75 to 1 inch of rain. Elsewhere, the Bay Area should expect around
.5 to .75 inches of rain in the valleys, coastal regions, and
bayshore, with amounts up to or exceeding 1 inch in the higher
elevations.
Wind gusts will also be a major story across the Central Coast, and
a Wind Advisory will in place Tuesday for the Santa Lucias, the
interior mountains of Monterey and San Benito Counties, and the
southern Salinas Valley, where wind gusts are expected to peak at 40-
50 mph, with the highest peaks receiving gusts up to 55-60 mph. Even
the Central Coast valleys and coastlines, as far north as Santa Cruz
and Gilroy, are predicted to receive gusts to 30 mph. The SF Bay
Area is expected to receive wind gusts up to 20-25 mph in the
valleys and coast, with the higher elevations reaching 30 mph gusts.
The combined impacts from the wind and the rain will result in
hazardous conditions across the Central Coast, and even up in the SF
Bay Area, the relatively minor impacts are exacerbated by the fact
that saturated soils will make it much easier for 1) localized
bursts of strong rainfall to result in minor urban and small stream
flooding, and 2) wind gusts to knock over trees and power lines.
Tomorrow should be the day to prepare for possible power outages and
flooding, and we once again urge you to "turn around, don't drown"
when encountering a flooded roadway or path.
After this system moves out on Wednesday, the pattern continues to
be unsettled, although the current 7-day forecast does not call for
any major storm systems through the rest of the week. There is a
shot of rain Thursday into Friday, but at the moment, forecast
rainfall totals are puny and do not exceed even a tenth of an inch
anywhere within the Bay Area and Central Coast. CPC guidance shows
the balance of probabilities leaning towards above average
precipitation (40-50% probability) right up until the end of the
month, and long-range ensembles hint at a system set up for the
beginning of next week, though as usual, the details of this system
are far from being clear. One other weather threat that comes up in
the 7-day outlook is an early indication of unseasonably low
temperatures for next weekend, with the current low temperature
forecasts down to the low to mid 30s in the North Bay valleys and
higher elevations. This is particularly noticeable given that the
growing season is near and media reports are indicating that the
"bud break" has begun across the North Bay vineyards. We'll monitor
the upcoming situation as the forecast becomes better defined
through the week.

.AVIATION...as of 11:24 PM PDT Sunday... Mist and pockets of fog
are building for much of the area, reducing visibilities. Expect
mostly MVFR/IFR CIGs through the night and some reductions in
visibility from rain and mist. CIGs and Visibilities improve into
the late night and through the morning. Monday afternoon offers
light to moderate westerly winds that will reduce into the night.
Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR CIGs linger into the late night but improve
ahead of Monday morning. Winds will stay moderate and westerly well
through the day, but look to weaken into Monday night.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...IFR and MVFR CIGs last into early Monday
morning. Expect light to moderate winds through the TAF period.

tonight, then diminishing Monday morning. A strong low pressure
system arrives late Monday and lasts into mid week with
widespread rain and strong southerly winds expected, especially

Tuesday morning for the waters south of Point Pinos. Mixed
northwest and southwest swells with moderate periods persist.
