KEY MESSAGES:
- Dangerous heat Wednesday through Thursday. Afternoon heat indices
around 100, with lows Thursday morning remaining in the 70s.
- Another round of thunderstorms likely Thursday afternoon through
Friday morning. Severe thunderstorms possible.
The threat for severe thunderstorms has mostly waned overnight with
instability decreasing, but scattered thunderstorms will continue
into mid-morning across much of the area. Heavy downpours are likely,
with some minor flooding possible across west-central Minnesota where
several rounds of thunderstorms have trained over the same region
overnight. High clouds will be slow to clear out this morning after
the rain ends, which complicates the temperature forecast & threat
for excessive heat this afternoon. SKies will clear out first across
western Minnesota, where temperatures should have no trouble warming
into the upper 90s this afternoon. More uncertainty exists farther
east into eastern Minnesota & western Wisconsin where cloud cover
could linger into early afternoon. Hi-res models better capable of
resolving this morning's convection & cloud cover only keep
afternoon highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, while some global models
still want to warm temperatures into the upper 90s. Not the highest
confidence on which solution will win out, so opted for a middle of
the road approach for temperatures this afternoon with highs
generally in the low 90s from east-central MN into western Wisconsin.
Dew points will remain high with values in the upper 60s to low 70s
across the area, so this still allows much of MN to reach heat
advisory criteria this afternoon. If clouds clear out sooner &
temperatures do reach the upper 90s, then Excessive Heat Warning
criteria could be reached with heat indices over 100F. The possible
for cooler temperatures seems a bit more likely than the Excessive
Heat scenario, so decided to keep the current Heat Advisory ongoing.
Temperatures will stay warm overnight owing to the high dewpoints,
with temperatures only cooling into the low to mid 70s across much of
the area. This means little cooling relief is likely overnight so
we'll keep this afternoon's Heat Advisory going overnight through
Thursday, when another hot & humid day is expected. The same
temperature caveats to today exist on Thursday, with a better chance
for scattered thunderstorms & cloud cover during the afternoon.
Temperatures could still warm well into the 90s before any potential
thunderstorms develop, with an outside chance at the upper 90s &
possibly reaching Excessive Heat Criteria. For simplicity's sake,
kept the Heat Advisory going through Thursday evening as well
although I would not be surprised if portions of it, primarily the TC
metro, need to be upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning for Thursday
afternoon.
Thunderstorms look possible at some point Thursday into Friday,
although strong low-level capping mean that they will depend on the
timing of a shortwave coming out of the Dakotas. Chances are highest
Thursday afternoon/evening once plenty of instability builds during
the afternoon & most guidance passes the shortwave over the area.
Scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible with CAPE values over
3000 J/kg & sufficient deep shear, with thunderstorms most likely
across the southern 1/3 of MN into west-central WI. Similar to
Tuesday night, the high instability values look supportive of multiple
rounds of thunderstorms, including a possible MCS overnight into
Friday morning.
Cooler but still seasonable temperatures are expected Friday through
the weekend with low chances of rain expected. A few thunderstorm
chances look possible next week, but these will depend on the track
& timing of individual shortwaves, so just mention generic 20-30%
PoPs for now.

Subsidence from rising heights in the wake of last night's convection
has allowed skies to clear out this morning and will lead to
relatively quiet weather this period. Tonight, we will see a weak LLJ
move the through area and warm advection with it will lead to an
uptick in mid-level clouds. There's also a small chance we could see
some shra/tsra develop out of this LLJ down into central MN, but
chances look better across northern MN. This chance though is too low
to include in any of the TAFs. For winds, they will be light today
and out of the W to NW. Overnight, they'll stay light. but swinging
around to the south as the front for Thursday afternoon begins
approaching.
KMSP...There are 2 small chances for precip this period. One around
12z for that warm advective forcing mentioned above. The other would
be after 22z Thu for the potential for afternoon TSRA development,
but at this point, neither chance looks high enough to include in the
TAF.
