Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
936 PM PST Sun Feb 12 2023
.SYNOPSIS...12/151 PM.
Isolated showers will linger through this evening with dry
conditions expected on Monday. For Tuesday and Wednesday, an
inside slider will bring strong north winds to the area along with
light showers across interior sections and low snow levels.
Another storm is expected to bring a threat of rain next weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM (SUN-WED)...12/829 PM.
***UPDATE***
The upper low is now about 100 miles to the SW of San Diego and
moving to the south and east. It is bringing quite a few showers
to San Diego and Riverside counties but nothing but mid and upper
level clouds to LA county and points north. The offshore flow
brought 4 to 8 degrees of warming to SLO and SBA counties but the
thicker clouds to the south brought 1 to 2 degrees of cooling to
VTA and LA counties.
Clouds will slowly clear out overnight as the upper low pulls
further away. difficult low clouds fcst tonight as offshore flow
battles a developing. Aircraft sounding data out of KLAX does not
show any marine layer nor an inversion so think the low cloud
formation will be limited. The best chc for low clouds will be
over western SBA county and the Paso Robles area. There are some
isolated gusty northerly winds through the Santa Ynez range but
not enough to warrant an advisory.
Wednesday and Thursdays lows will be well below normal and in fact
the next shift may have to cool them further esp on Thursday.
Forecast is in pretty good shape and will issue a small update to
trim back overnight low clouds.
***From Previous Discussion***
Overall, 12Z models in good synoptic agreement through the short
term period. At upper levels, low will move inland across northern
Baja tonight with weak ridge developing over the area on Monday.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, cold inside slider drops into the Great
Basin. Near the surface, west to northwest flow will prevail
through Monday with moderate to strong northerly flow developing
on Tuesday and Wednesday.
With a good onshore push through the day on Monday, this low
level moisture will likely keep skies partly cloudy west of the
mountains Monday afternoon. Gusty southwesterly winds across the
Antelope Valley Monday afternoon and night, so will keep current
WIND ADVISORY in effect for this area.
For Monday night through Wednesday, attention turns to the impacts
of the potent inside slider. Main concern with this system will be
the potential for strong and damaging northerly winds beginning
late Monday night and continuing through Tuesday evening. Looking
at latest NBM numbers and ECMWF ensembles/EFI, the northerly winds
look to be a slight bit weaker than yesterday. However, the NBM
still indicates about a 70-90% chance of northerly gusts in excess
of 65 MPH across the mountains Tuesday through Tuesday evening.
So, given the consistency of this scenario the last few days, will
issue HIGH WIND WATCHES for the LA/Ventura/Santa Barbara county
mountains (including the Santa Ynez Range) as well as the coastal
zones south of the Santa Ynez Range and the Santa Clarita Valley.
At the very least, there will be widespread advisory level
northerly winds across many areas on Tuesday. Late Tuesday night
and Wednesday, the winds will shift to the northeast and weaken
below advisory levels.
The other concern with the inside slider will be the potential for
some shower activity. At this time, it looks like most of any
measurable precipitation chances will be confined to the mountains
Tuesday and Tuesday night. Amounts, if any, will generally be
under 0.10 inches. However, snow levels drop down to around 2000
feet Tuesday afternoon/night. So, if any showers develop, there
could be some flurries or a dusting of snow across the interior
valleys and the Antelope Valley. Also, there could be some travel
issues through the Grapevine Tuesday night.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...12/149 PM.
For the extended, 12Z models remain on the same broad synoptic
pager, but differ in the details. It's these differences that may
impact the forecast noticeably.
For Thursday, benign weather is expected as an upper level ridge
develops over the area. Skies will start out clear, but high
clouds (ahead of upcoming system) will be on the increase through
the day. Weak offshore flow will prevent any stratus development
and will allow for some slight warming across the area.
For Friday and Saturday, both the GFS and ECMWF drop an upper low
southward, off the CA coast. However, the GFS is further west with
the low's track than the ECMWF. So, the ECWMF solution would
indicate a greater chance of appreciable rainfall for the area
than the GFS. This is also shown in the ensemble solutions with
many ECMWF members indicating precipitation while much fewer GFS
ensemble members indicate appreciable precipitation. Current NBM
numbers toe a nice middle ground for the various solutions,
indicating chance POPs for the area Friday/Saturday. Very
preliminary totals look to be generally around 0.25 inches or
less. Snow levels looks to remain on the low side, generally in
the 2500-3500 foot range, so a few inches of snowfall will be
possible across the mountains.
For Sunday, dry conditions are anticipated in the wake of the
upper low. Weak offshore flow will allow for some slight warming
for most areas.

In the outer waters, Small Craft Advisory level winds or seas
remain tonight. NW winds will increase Mon afternoon, likely
reaching Gale force by late Monday afternoon across zone 670,
extending into zones 673/676 on Monday night. Strong Gale force
winds are expected Mon night into Tue evening, and there is a
20-30% chance of STORM FORCE wind gusts Tue into Tue evening.
Winds will diminish below gale force late Tue night, but SCA level
wind and seas will continue thru Wed night, with SCA level seas
Thu.
In the northern inner waters, there is a 40% chance of SCA level
winds Mon afternoon/evening. Winds and seas will likely increase
to SCA levels Mon night/Tue morning, then there is a good chance
(50%) of gale force winds Tue afternoon into Tue evening. After
that, SCA level winds and seas will likely persist thru Wed
evening, with SCA level seas lingering thru at least late Wed
night if not Thu.
In the southern inner waters, SCA conds are not expected thru Mon
evening. W-NW winds are expected to reach SCA levels across
western portions of the SBA Channel after midnight Mon night, then
overspread the rest of the inner waters Tue morning. There is a
good chance (above 50%) of Gale force winds across much of the
SBA Channel and the southern inner waters Tue afternoon thru late
Tue night, followed by a period of SCA level winds. Conds should
drop below SCA levels by Wed afternoon.

.BEACHES...12/935 PM.
A larger surf event is expected to affect the region beginning
Monday afternoon in northern areas, then spreading southward. The
peak of the surf is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, with surf
heights of 14 to 18 feet and local sets to 20 feet on Central
Coast beaches, 8 to 12 feet on west facing beaches of Ventura
County and 5 to 9 feet on west facing beaches of Los Angeles
County. There is a 20% chance that the surf may be large enough to
require a High Surf Warning on the Central Coast. High surf will
likely continue into Wednesday night or early Thursday.
As the height of the high tides increase with the astronomical
cycle, there will be an increasing chance of tidal overflow or
minor coastal flooding by midweek.
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY has been issued for the central coast and
this advisory will very likely be expanded to other coastal
sections soon.
