very cold air mass will spread into the area Tuesday through
Thursday and likely keep temperatures much below through the
remainder of the week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...13/844 AM.
***UPDATE***
Latest satellite and surface observations indicate some stratus
across the Central and the LAX Basin with clear skies elsewhere.
Current sounding data indicates a marine inversion, ranging from
1800 feet north of Point Conception to near 4000 feet across the
LAX Basin. As for winds, no significant winds are observed.
Forecast wise for the immediate short term, no significant issues
are anticipated. West of the mountains, will expect limited
clearing and even more development (in currently clear areas),
given the increasing onshore gradients and deep marine inversion.
So, will anticipate most areas west of the mountains to be on the
partly cloudy side of things through the day. For interior
sections, skies should remain mostly sunny. As for winds, the
increasing onshore gradients will generate some gusty
southwesterly winds across the mountains/deserts this afternoon
and evening. So, there is a decent chance of advisory-level winds
across the Antelope Valley (especially the foothills). So, will
keep current WIND ADVISORY in effect for this area.
Overall, current forecast has good handle on the immediate short
term. So, no significant updates are anticipated. For the
afternoon forecast, attention will be on inside slider, bringing
strong and potentially damaging northerly winds Tuesday and
Tuesday night along with some possible winter weather issues for
the mountains.

Weak high pressure is building into the region this morning as an
upper-level cutoff trough continues to slowly exit the region. The
cutoff trough located along the California-Arizona-Mexico border
region will continue to move east, while the shortwave ridge over
northern California will build south through the day. A drier day
is forecast for today along with a some warming for daytime highs.
Low clouds and fog have developed along the Central Coast early
this morning as a stable air mass has permitted a marine
inversion to develop. With onshore flow strengthening through the
day ahead of the next storm system, it is possible that clouds may
struggle to clear away from the Central Coast beaches today, while
areawide a partly to mostly cloudy forecast looks on tap for
today despite the shortwave ridging in place.
The latest model solutions bring in a fair amount of low
clouds through tonight as strong onshore pressure gradients
develop. High resolution multi-model ensemble members agree well
with HREF and local 3-km WRF solutions, and NAM BUFR time height
sections in developing a deep marine layer depth or moist layer
tonight through Tuesday morning. A zonal flow aloft behind the
shortwave ridge will push a weak disturbance over the region
tonight and it could bring the possibility of heavy drizzle or
very light rain for the Central Coast and over the Southland late
tonight and Tuesday morning. PoPs have been nudged up a little
higher across the region highlight the potential.
A lot of the effort in the forecast went into the Tuesday through
Wednesday night period as a cold inside-slider remains on tap to
move through the Southwestern United States through Wednesday.
The trough located in the Gulf of Alaska will dig south through
Wednesday. The winds and cold temperatures will very likely be the
main story with this system. A very cold air mass behind the
system will create a very strong pressure gradient across the area
on Tuesday. Widespread gusty to potentially damaging winds will
develop on Tuesday, and linger into Tuesday evening. High Wind
Watches for the Transverse ranges and into the Antelope Valley
were converted into High Wind Warnings for Tuesday morning through
Tuesday evening. A High Wind Warning was added for the Channel
Islands offshore and the Lake Casitas area for roughly the same
time period, while a High Wind Watch remains in effect for the
Santa Clarita Valley.
Precipitation still cannot be ruled out this trough, but any
amounts will be light. Rainfall amounts will be a tenth of an
inch or less, if any at all. Low snow levels down to the 2000
foot elevation with the system could bring accumulating snowfall
to the foothill areas, even into the foothills of the Southland.
Mountain highways could be affected by accumulating snowfall on
Tuesday and Tuesday evening as the colder air mass punches in.
The other part of the story will be the very cold air mass behind
the system. Temperatures for the period break away from NBM
values and trend colder as a due northerly flow develops. Near
record low temperatures are possible across the interior portions
of the area, especially if model trends continue and the forecast
tabular output verifies. With deterministic forecast tabular
output and forecast ensemble trending colder, a Freeze Watch was
added for many Ventura and Santa Barbara County coastal and valley
areas, as well as the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys for
late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Some of the watches
could be converted to Frost Advisories, but with a good deal of
uncertainty with model trends, a Freeze Watch was issued.
Frost and freeze products will likely need to reissued for
Wednesday night as well. The main point is that region will be
well below normal for this time of year between Tuesday and
Thursday. High temperatures across the coastal and valley areas
will struggle to reach 60 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, and many
interior valley and mountain locations will only warm to the 40s
on Wednesday.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...13/452 AM.
The air mass will start to recover on Thursday, but temperatures
will still remain well below normal. Another round of frost
advisory could linger into Thursday night and Friday morning.
Over the weekend, forecast ensemble members continue to storm
system moving into the area. Deterministic model solutions of the
GFS and ECMWF do not look overly impressive, but EPS and GEFS
members do indicate wetter solutions outside of the control
members. A fair amount of solutions have rainfall, but with a
large spread across the member solutions. For now, NBM values
remain in forecast period beyond Thursday as confidence in timing
and exact amounts remains low. A cool and unsettled weather
pattern should expected over the weekend.

.AVIATION...13/1959Z.
At 1838Z at KLAX there was a 3000 ft deep marine layer. The top
of the inversion was at 4700 feet with a temp of 8C.
Clouds were widespread on the Central Coast and in the Santa Ynez
Valley, and were beginning to push into the Salinas Valley. Clouds
were also beginning to form across coastal and some valley areas
of L.A. County. Conditions were mostly MVFR north of Point
Conception, and MVFR/VFR across L.A. County, except locally IFR
in the foothills. Clouds may have trouble clearing today. Expect
widespread cigs to return early this evening if clearing does
occur, with mostly MVFR conds expected. There could be some
drizzle late tonight, especially across L.A. County.
KLAX...Low confidence in the TAF. There is a 30-40 percent chance
that MVFR cigs will linger into the afternoon or not even clear.
There is a 30% chance cigs will arrive as early as 23Z. There is a
30% chance of an 8-10 kt east wind component thru 19Z.
KBUR...Low to moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 50 percent
chance of no cigs this afternoon.

.MARINE...13/1040 AM.
No changes to the marine forecast in the morning update.
Very dangerous conditions expected across the entire coastal
waters Tuesday into Tuesday night. This is not a typical strong
wind event.
In the outer waters, moderate to high confidence in the forecast.
Marginal Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds and seas at times
today, but winds will increase to gale force from north to south
this afternoon thru late this evening. Winds will continue to
increase thru Tue. On Tue, very strong gales will affect the
entire outer waters with very large and dangerous seas. There will
likely be some STORM FORCE wind gusts to 50 kt Tue, and there is
a 20-30% chance that a STORM WARNING will be needed for portions
of the outer waters. Winds will decrease below Gale force late Tue
night or early Wed, then below SCA levels by Wed afternoon.
However, SCA level seas will likely continue through Thu or Fri.
In the northern inner waters, SCA level seas are expected to
arrive this evening, and winds will likely also increase to SCA
levels. Gale force winds are expected there Tue afternoon/evening.
Then, winds will drop to SCA levels for the remainder of Tue
night, and possibly into Wed morning. However, seas will remain at
or above SCA levels thru at least Wed night and possibly Thu.
In the southern inner waters, W-NW winds are expected to reach
SCA levels across western portions of the SBA Channel after
midnight tonight, then overspread the rest of the inner waters by
Tue morning. Winds will increase to Gale force across the entire
SBA Channel and the most of the southern inner waters Tuesday
afternoon. This may occur a bit sooner in western portions, and
the Gale Warning may have to be moved from noon to mid morning
Tue to account for this. There could be gusts close to STORM FORCE
across western portions of the SBA Channel and the southern inner
waters Tue. Winds will drop below gale force late Tue night
(possibly a bit sooner), then below SCA levels by early Wed
morning. Then, SCA conds are not expected thru Fri.

.BEACHES...13/1048 AM.
A very large surf event is expected to affect the region
beginning this afternoon in northern areas, then spreading
southward. The peak of the surf is expected Tuesday and Wednesday,
with surf heights of 14 to 18 feet and local sets to 20 feet on
Central Coast beaches, 8 to 12 feet on west facing beaches of
Ventura County and 5 to 9 feet on west facing beaches of Los
Angeles County. There is a 20% chance that the surf may be large
enough to require a High Surf Warning on the Central Coast. High
surf may continue into Wednesday night or early Thursday.
As the height of the high tides increase with the astronomical
cycle, there will be an increasing chance of tidal overflow or
minor coastal flooding by midweek.
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY is already in effect for the Central Coast
and this advisory has been expanded to the remainder of the coast
just this morning.
