.Short Term (Now through Thursday Night)...

Across the region as of 08Z, rain showers are clearing portions of
southern Kentucky and the Bluegrass as a surface cold front
gradually sinks south and east across the area. Behind the front,
cooler and drier air will continue to filter southward during the
morning, ending precipitation chances and setting up what should be
a dry Thursday across central Kentucky and southern Indiana. As the
cold front approaches the KY/TN border, its progress will slow,
becoming quasi-stationary across central TN and eastern KY late this
afternoon. North of the boundary, light NE flow will keep
temperatures 15-20 degrees cooler relative to Wednesday, although
still above normal compared to climatology.

The more active portion of the short term forecast is expected after
sunset tonight into Friday morning. A cutoff H5 low currently over
the southwestern United States will rapidly move eastward during the
day today. As the upper low crosses the Rockies, it will begin to
interact with the stalled sfc frontal boundary extending from
central TX to the mid-Atlantic. Sfc low pressure near the Red River
valley will undergo mutual amplification with the upper low, rapidly
deepening as it moves into central MO by sunrise Friday. Downstream
from the sfc/upper low, the stalled frontal boundary across central
TN will begin to lift northward as a warm front early Friday
morning, with temperatures remaining steady/warming overnight
tonight across south central KY.

In response to rapid pressure/height falls associated with the low
across the central Plains, a strong LLJ will develop late tonight,
sending a rich plume of moisture northward. The magnitude of this
moisture advection is quite stout, with ECMWF Ensemble Integrated
Vapor Transport values approaching climatological maximums from 06-
18Z Friday. Additionally, isentropic analysis on the 300K surface
depicts a broad area of moist isentropic upglide in association with
warm FROPA, providing additional support for heavy rainfall Friday
morning. Although pretty much the entire CWA should see
precipitation in association with warm FROPA, the highest
precipitation totals will likely be across northwestern portions of
the CWA, which will be closer to the upper low track and thus
experience the most favorable diffluence aloft/jet core dynamics.

Finally, in addition to the enhanced precipitation chances Thursday
night into Friday morning, winds will also begin to increase in
response to the strengthening surface pressure gradient as the
rapidly deepening low approaches the Ohio Valley. Initially light NE
winds will increase after midnight tonight, veering easterly and
then southeasterly as the sfc warm front passes, at which point near-
sfc warm advection will send temperatures upward. Since the warm
front's position/evolution will be a strong determinant for
temperatures late tonight into Friday morning, low temperatures will
vary considerably from north to south tonight, ranging from the mid-
to-upper 40s along and north of I-64 to the mid-to-upper 50s across
southern KY.

Meteorological Discussion and
Sensible Weather Impacts
=============================================

Friday...

Simply put, Friday will be an active and potentially impactful
weather day across the Ohio Valley with multiple hazards on the
table.  Heavy rainfall and flash flooding, strong gradient wind
gusts, and the potential for severe convection are likely.  We'll
break down the situation piece by piece here.

In terms of a general overview, the multi-model consensus remains in
good agreement with the overall synoptic pattern.  Fairly intense
negatively tilted shortwave trough axis will swing out of the Plains
and head towards the Great Lakes on Friday.  At the surface, a warm
front will be lifting northward across the region at the start of
the period (700 AM Friday).  This warm front is likely to be in the
vicinity of the WK/BG Parkways at that time and will continue to
lift northward through the morning hours.  To the north of this warm
front, widespread rain showers with heavy rainfall and embedded
thunderstorms will be possible posing a risk of flash flooding.  The
warm front should surge northward into southern IN and OH by early
afternoon.  As this occurs, Pacific cold front will be entering
western KY by mid-late morning and will likely be in the vicinity of
the I-65 corridor by 18Z or so.  Most of the model guidance suggests
a line of strong/severe convection along this feature and this front
will surge through the region and be east of the LMK forecast area
by late afternoon.  In the wake of the cold front surging through, a
pronounced dry slot will push into the region and sufficient mixing
will allow a downward transport of higher momentum air aloft
resulting in strong gradient wind gusts that will linger into the
mid-late evening hours.

Hazards Assessment:

Flash Flood Potential: Medium-High Confidence

Widespread convection is expected to be in progress at the beginning
of the period as aforementioned warm frontal boundary lifts
northward.  Influx of adequate moisture and strong IVT will result
in moderate to heavy rainfall with the highest rainfall axis being
across portions of northern KY and southern Indiana.  Total rainfall
amounts of 2-3 inches with locally higher amounts will be possible
in areas north of the WK/BG Parkways and across southern Indiana.
After coordinating with WFO PAH/ILN/IND, will be hoisting a Flood
Watch to cover this hazard.  Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches will be
possible for the event across southern KY, though residence time of
heavy rainfall across the region looks to be of shorter duration as
the warm front looks to move through this part of our area with some
speed.

Gradient (Non-Thunderstorm) Winds: High Confidence

The combination of the strong high pressure to the south of the
region combined with a rather potent surface low riding through
southern IL and IN will create a strong pressure gradient across the
region.  Additionally, strengthening low-level jet of 60-70 knots
will be overhead.  The pressure gradient alone will allow for wind
gusts of 45-50 mph at times in and out of convection.  Once Pacific
front pushes through the region, dry slotting may occur in the wake
and strong mechanical mixing should be able to mix some of this
higher low-level jet air to the surface.  Wind gusts Friday
afternoon behind the front and its convection may result in wind
gusts of 45-55 mph with locally higher gusts.  Overall confidence is
high enough to issue a Wind Advisory with this package.  Confidence
in seeing wind gusts exceeding 58 mph remains to limited to issue a
High Wind Watch.  However, we'll be monitoring additional datasets
later today and this could be considered in future forecast
issuances.

Severe Thunderstorm Risk:  Medium Confidence

There continues to be a conditional risk of strong/severe
thunderstorms in advance of the cold front from late Friday morning
thorugh the afternoon hours.  A remnant QLCS should be in progress
across western KY in the morning hours and this feature will shift
east-northeastward through the day.  Model soundings show deep layer
shear remaining in place with sufficient amounts of speed and
directional shear for high values of SRH.  The main uncertainty
centers around our ability to destabilize the warm sector in the
wake of morning convection.  As of this writing, it appears that
destabilization will be more muted across southern IN due to ongoing
convection near the surface warm front.  In areas west of I-65, the
ability to destabilize will be most muted across the Pennyrile
region due to speed of the ongoing QLCS arriving prior to
destabilization.  However, the majority of the CAMs suggest that the
highest risks of destabilization will likely be in areas east of I-
65 during the afternoon.  While the primary convective mode looks to
be linear, this will likely be a QLCS with bowing segments and
embedded supercells posing a damaging wind and isolated tornado
risk.  We discussed this scenario with SPC and agreed with a slight
westward expansion of the slight risk area (mainly east of I-65 and
south of the Ohio River).  The uncertainty regarding instability
precluded a categorical upgrade to an enhanced risk as of this
writing.  A couple of things to note here, first, if current data
trends continue to hold, an upgrade to enhanced is possible over our
eastern half of the forecast area.  Secondly, if there is any slow
down in the speed of the cold front and it gets delayed further into
the afternoon, the severe threat could end up being shift further
west.

River Flooding Risk:  Low-Medium Confidence

QPF amounts were increased across southern Indiana and the northern
half of KY with this forecast issuance.  With rainfall amounts of 2-
3 inches falling on already saturated soils, excessive runoff could
lead to rapid rises on area creeks and streams, especially across
southern IN and the northern half of KY.

Weekend and into next week...

Current forecast remains simply an update of the previous forecast
here.  Drier and cooler weather is expected for the weekend as
surface high pressure builds into the region.  Upper troughing will
likely keep some clouds in the area for Saturday.  Mainly dry
conditions are expected for Sunday and Monday.  A quick moving upper
level wave and surface front will pass through late Monday and into
Tuesday bringing a risk of rain showers.  Unsettled weather may
continue into Wed/Thu as additional disturbances move toward the
region.

Highs Sat/Sun will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s with
overnight lows in the 30s/40s.  Highs Monday will warm back into the
lower 70s with highs on Tuesday dropping back into the 60s.  Highs
Wednesday should be cooler with readings in the lower-mid 50s.

Impacts: IFR cig/vis in showers and storms late tonight into Fri
morning, very gusty winds beginning around midday Friday

Discussion: VFR conditions this afternoon and evening with light
winds veering from initial N-NE to due east by late evening.

Rain shield associated with the warm front moves in around midnight
tonight.  Look for cig/vis to drop into low-end MVFR with IFR
possible at times. Winds out of the east continue to ramp up, but
gusts only to 20-25 kt by daybreak. Embedded thunder will be enough
to support VCTS/CB mention.

Lowest confidence is attached to a convective line coming through
toward midday Friday, but that will move through quickly enough that
its impacts will be brief.  Behind the line expect very gusty winds
from the south, with 40-50 kt gusts possible. This will mainly
impact the SDF planning period, as it arrives too late to really be
mentionable in BWG, LEX, or HNB.

Confidence: High in VFR conditions Thursday, Medium-High in
deteriorating CIGs/VIS Thursday night, Low-Medium in TS potential

Strong gusty winds, strong to severe thunderstorms, and heavy
rainfall are expected as this storm system pushes through the area.
The main severe weather threats on Friday will be damaging winds and
isolated tornadoes.
